Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

Week 6 update, plants sprouted on 9/6.

I had to move the dwc into the tent last weekend as i ran out of room under the t5.

Thanks Doc, I'm still not sure why the dwc is still lagging behind. I think maybe it was to hot under the previous light as it seems to be doing a little better in since the move.

Here is my window sill reaper at 7 weeks. I just recently acquired a t5ho 4' 4 bulb light and after being under it for around 5 days the plant has gone crazy and has a bunch more little leaves popping out. The top turned purple at first and is now a much darker green. I'm new to this, but it seems normal from what I've seen in searches.

After looking at your plants I definitely want to experiment with coco coir. I've read a few things in the search, but wondering if you have any suggestions on a good way to start?

Seeds sown into one Rapid Rooter on 10/14/12.

Nine days later:

Also sowed seeds into starter mix. Nothing yet from that cell. Seems these things like the Rapid Rooters.

I would buy a good quality coco like readygro. The cheaper coco that comes in blocks doesn't do as well as the ones that haven't been compressed. I also sprinkle in a quite a bit of xtreme gardening mykos as i fill the pot, it is pretty cheap a small pouch is a couple $.

The biggest drawback of coco is it retains very little water so you are feeding every day once the plants get bigger. Since you have to water so often I would recommend sensi grow/bloom ph perfect, it will save a lot of time by not having to check and balance the ph with every feeding.

I have a lot of customers who will mix 50/50 coco peat and they don't have to feed every day.

edit: Added links.

Here's mine at about week 7 from sprout. It's slow going but I'm not in a rush to have a huge plant, since this is my winter project, and winters here last till almost may

And before you give me a hard time about the algae, I know. I'm inbetween jobs at the moment and don't have money to got lightproof that bucket yet, but it's final bucket will be free in another week or two, and it is lightproof. This is just a temporary home.

Week 7 update. I transplanted the plants this afternoon from 3 quart buckets into 7 quart ones.

Probably waited a little longer than I should have.

Here is an update on the indoor plant after a week under my new t5. It appears t5 beats Southen California western facing window. Potted it up yesterday and I think I should have gone larger.

Balcony plant is growing much slower and not worth taking a picture of.

Very nice! How long are you leaving the light on for?
The pot size is fine you will just have to transplant again sooner.

I leave the light on about 16-18 hours a day. The plants sleep when I sleep.

I need to get a timer, just haven't had the time to go grab one yet. Only fert I've used so far is a drop or two of fish emulsion with each watering.
