I tried to run the mem test and it says that it cannot open it because it doesn't recognize the file type. Here's the screenshot of the other program though:
The TMPIN2 is all across the board, that's the highest temp it reaches though.
Those temps are good.
IGG - I'm normally loathe to jump in and help when there are already plenty of people giving you advice. Too many people pointing fingers is just going to waste a LOT of your time. I do this for a living, so I'll tell you exactly what I'd be doing if I had your PC in front of me.
I would STRONGLY suggest you do NOT take the heat-sink off your processor. If you do, be VERY careful and make sure you have thermal cleaner and new thermal grease on hand to reinstall the heat-sink.
1. First - you need to find out why your computer is rebooting. XP has done us the "favor" of rebooting on system errors. Trouble is, we can't find out what is CAUSING the error because it F-ING REBOOTS! The first thing you need to do is turn that function off.
Right click My Computer / Properties / Advanced (tab on top) / Startup and Recovery (bottom section) - Settings. Under System Failure (bottom section), UNCHECK automatically restart.
Now, instead of rebooting, your PC will blue-screen. You WANT this. This is how you figure out what is causing the problem. The next time your PC blue-screens, copy down as much info as you can. Typically it will give a file name that cause the error. It will almost always give an error message towards the top of the screen.
Once you have this error, start Googling. It'll probably either point to a corrupt driver, system file or memory problem.
2. Go into Add/Remove Programs and remove EVERYTHING suspicious. If you don't know what something is, Google it. Chances are pretty good something is lurking there that is spyware.
3. Download Avast!, download Spybot Search and Destroy, download Ad-Aware and download Ewido (AVG). None of these programs are very large, and should only take an hour or so to download all of them on dial-up. Maybe less.
4. Install all of the above. Run in this order: Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Ewido (AVG). Make sure you update the software before you run scans. Run Avast!, update and schedule a boot-time scan. Reboot, allow Avast to scan.
5. Download HiJackThis. Save it to c:hjt (or another directory OUTSIDE of your users folder). Run, scan and save a log file. Copy the contents of that log file into a PM and send to me.
If you need help finding or figuring out any of these programs, Google is a good resource. All of them are simple enough to figure out, though.
Step 1 is going to be the big one. Make sure you get that blue-screen and you write down everything you can. Steps 2-5 will take you a long time (probably about 4-8 hours in total with all the scans, depending on how large your hard drive is).
The good thing about PC's is if something goes wrong, you can fix it, typically for nothing, or real cheap. If you're having these problems with a Mac, you either need to bring it to a Mac authorized technician, or buy a new Mac.
If you end up doing all this and I get a PM from you with the HJT log, I'll review it ASAP. Otherwise, I wish you luck! You'll get it eventually
