Compter Help Needed

How does it run now without it? Has the fan stopped blasting? Have you run a defrag?
Well, the fan blasting was just a one time thing. I'm about to run defrag in a minute here right after I d/l two more stuff.

Bootable ISO, yes and you can find the model with your Device Manager.
Hmmm... I just looked in the Device Manager before I posted and it wasn't listed (the hard drives that is)....am I looking under the wrong pull down menu (which is odd because I don't spot them).

Yes, it has a CD/DVD burner.

Iggy,

Fan blasting alone isn't enough, if you have enought crap on the heatsink. You have to remove the fan and usually take the heatsink out. The dust gets so thick it is almost like dried mud and literally needs to be washed or scraped off.

Before telling him to take his PC apart, let's first see the temperature. the fans might operate perfectly.

I'm going to finish runing the tests and repairing tomarrow. Defraging took alot longer than expected which was surprising because the thing said it didn't really need it. Plus, Rich's back home and wants to use the compuetr

And besides...I have to go out and get drunk.

Should be under "Disk Drives" or something similar.

Huh, that's wher eI looked to begin with. I just checked all the tabs there and not one single one lists the two hard drives....oddd.

The compuet just restarted on me again...grrrrr..... I'm about to run those two programs you told me to download.

I tried to run the mem test and it says that it cannot open it because it doesn't recognize the file type. Here's the screenshot of the other program though:

The TMPIN2 is all across the board, that's the highest temp it reaches though.

Those temps are good.

IGG - I'm normally loathe to jump in and help when there are already plenty of people giving you advice. Too many people pointing fingers is just going to waste a LOT of your time. I do this for a living, so I'll tell you exactly what I'd be doing if I had your PC in front of me.

I would STRONGLY suggest you do NOT take the heat-sink off your processor. If you do, be VERY careful and make sure you have thermal cleaner and new thermal grease on hand to reinstall the heat-sink.

1. First - you need to find out why your computer is rebooting. XP has done us the "favor" of rebooting on system errors. Trouble is, we can't find out what is CAUSING the error because it F-ING REBOOTS! The first thing you need to do is turn that function off.

Right click My Computer / Properties / Advanced (tab on top) / Startup and Recovery (bottom section) - Settings. Under System Failure (bottom section), UNCHECK automatically restart.

Now, instead of rebooting, your PC will blue-screen. You WANT this. This is how you figure out what is causing the problem. The next time your PC blue-screens, copy down as much info as you can. Typically it will give a file name that cause the error. It will almost always give an error message towards the top of the screen.

Once you have this error, start Googling. It'll probably either point to a corrupt driver, system file or memory problem.

2. Go into Add/Remove Programs and remove EVERYTHING suspicious. If you don't know what something is, Google it. Chances are pretty good something is lurking there that is spyware.

3. Download Avast!, download Spybot Search and Destroy, download Ad-Aware and download Ewido (AVG). None of these programs are very large, and should only take an hour or so to download all of them on dial-up. Maybe less.

4. Install all of the above. Run in this order: Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Ewido (AVG). Make sure you update the software before you run scans. Run Avast!, update and schedule a boot-time scan. Reboot, allow Avast to scan.

5. Download HiJackThis. Save it to c:hjt (or another directory OUTSIDE of your users folder). Run, scan and save a log file. Copy the contents of that log file into a PM and send to me.

If you need help finding or figuring out any of these programs, Google is a good resource. All of them are simple enough to figure out, though.

Step 1 is going to be the big one. Make sure you get that blue-screen and you write down everything you can. Steps 2-5 will take you a long time (probably about 4-8 hours in total with all the scans, depending on how large your hard drive is).

The good thing about PC's is if something goes wrong, you can fix it, typically for nothing, or real cheap. If you're having these problems with a Mac, you either need to bring it to a Mac authorized technician, or buy a new Mac.

If you end up doing all this and I get a PM from you with the HJT log, I'll review it ASAP. Otherwise, I wish you luck! You'll get it eventually :)

1. your problems are not temperature or fan related, so no need to take the PC apart.
2. you couldn't find the two drives because you only have one (ST3160021A - Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7,200RPM IDE). you have two partitions.
3. the memtest file is a bootable ISO (disk image) file. meaning you need to boot it from a floppy or CD.
4. use this tool for your hard drive:

Whens the last time you cleaned out your processor grid?
Uhhhh...never. How would I do that and what does it do?

GAH!!!! My computer is too slow, "The connection was reset by the server". The things won't download! Going to have to use my friends computer....

it keeps the airflow going to your processor..It might mot be the problem this time as omri said but its good preventitave maintinence..A plugged processor grid will cause your cpu to heat up and overheat if bad enough..That will also slow down your computer..Get your hands on a can of compressed air found at your local computer store take the side off and give the grid, fan and everything else a good cleaning..I do it once a month in my case I use my compressor with multiple water filters. You would be amazed how dirty it can get inside your case

OH!!!! That. Ya, that was actually the first thing I did, lol.

Barracuda is a very old hard-drive. Seagate is the best manufacturer though so you're still in luck, Seagate make the most stable hard-drives.
If it's still rebooting after a checkdisk - there are more serious issues.

-Is there any way you can make a backup of what's there now (another HDD is the best way)

What you need to do is make a backup & then get the Windows updates & hope that solves it. If not, you're down to putting in the XP install cd & asking it to repair. depending on your cd it may or may not wipe the hdd & start again.

You want 'repair' you do not want 'recover'
