DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Ok, cold nights are over for now, and plants are back outside after a few days in the kitchen and garden shed.
They actually look bigget and greener from their warm vacation inside...lol

Tumbleweed clearing is FINALLY done!!!!!

We celebrated by making a fire in the bbq (with wood) and bbq'd some hot dogs, then sat around the fire and made s'mores :)

Nice, so are you in da clear now? How soon to planting?

Tumbleweed clearing is FINALLY done!!!!!
Interesting, you never did say how you catch dem. When I was younger we use to make boleadoras, I actually got quite good up to a distance of 30 to 40+ feet, would be interesting to take a few shots at fast passing tumbleweeds, lol.

Nice ^_^ any pepper make it into dem dogs? When I eat dogs I’ll garnish the bun & dog with sofrito starter, nice zing to the combo and a little brown mustard FTW ^_^

Mmmmm, smores!!! Ever try adding peanut butter to the graham cracker? That makes even awesomer in my book!
Never tried peanut butter but sounds good … you think that might give the peppers I put in an off taste ;)

Oh, that sounds good, I'll have to tell the family next time!! :)

Most people here won't risk planting out until May 1st....so soon....very soon :)

LOL, no Bolas!! I use a pitchfork to spear them and drag them around...

Didn't do any peppers in the hot dogs, just bbq sauce and mustard....I was too tired to get fancy....or even do anything but squeeze condiments out of a jar :)

I love the tumbleweed flight! Way cool!

We get those dust devils here too, I few years ago I was burning mesquite stumps and used an old cabinet from the kitchen that had a metal lazy susan in it. It was about 30"s across, I was in the garden working, saw the lootle twister start right at the fire. It came right to me and gave me a bump, shoved me pretty good, a second later the chunk of lazy susan dropped to the ground right next to me! I was 80 yds from the fire..

+1 on 377!

Dang, you know they are strong when they are tossing metal around like that! Strong, and dangerous!!

I wish I had gotten the photo at the peak of it...It was a solid mass of swirling tumbleweeds at one point, 30+ feet in the air too....I've never seen that many get scooped up at one time :)

Okay, I've never seen that before! We get the dirt tornadoes, and we got plenty of tumbleweeds, but I can't say I've ever seen a tumbleweed tornado!!! Pretty cool in a scary sort of way.

I actually like the lack of humidity. My hair isn't as frizzy here.

I can step outside after taking a shower and my hair will be dry in about 2 minutes. In the south, you walk outside after taking a shower, and your clothes were soaking wet with sweat about 2 minutes later.

Just sayin'.
I would be happy to trade for humidity! Our skin gets so dry here, it has got to be better for your skin anywhere else!
The Boy saw the dirt devil 1st, ran towards it to get in the middle, then right when he was almost there, it picked up 150 tumbleweeds, and became crazy looking...lol
Needless to say, he turned and ran the other way....hahahhahaha

At this point
Remember the dirt devils on my uncles cotton farm. Hope you get to plant out soon.

Me too!! Planting out should be safe in early May :) Then the garden games begin :)

Oh!!

I almost forgot, the snakes have apparently woken up....

Under some of the tumbleweeds on the fenceline, we were greeted by a Mojave Green Rattler (1st one this year).....The Mojave's are extra aggressive little buggers too, more so than any other rattler I have ever seen...Shoot, they have been known to actually chase people...lol

He ended up skewered by a pitchfork, and beheaded with a loop hoe....bye bye....
I hate having to send them on like that.... however....
We can't be having those guys around in the yard...not with the 3 little kids next door...plus my gal, and our kids, do not have any fondness for them either.

Last year we were greeted by one under the tomato plants IN THE GARDEN! Bad mistake on their part....

RAMON!!

All that talk of Mexi food in Annie's and your Glogs made us go get Burritos from the place down the road :)

I love a good Carnitas Burrito....just liberally add Pequin flakes, and it's even better :)
So I got my peppers in the food today :)

OK, so I ordered the just released Fatalii Gourmet Jigsaw seeds from Fatalii.net a couple weeks ago. (couldn't help myself)
10 seeds were 20 Euros....works out to avout $2.60 per seed...lol .... Most I have ever paid for a seed!!
5 seeds per pack.....

Anyway, I figure on putting 7 of the seeds in the germ tray tonight.....

The other 3 seeds, I am offering to one of you nice people who post and interact in my glog :)
First one to call dibs, just pm me an address, and I'll stick them in the mail for you :)
All I ask is:
1. You try to grow them this season.
2. You either live in a long season area (so have time to grow them), or grow them indoors.

This way, there might be some seeds to share (after all, in the desert here, you just never know what might happen to pepper plants!!)

Very generous offer spreading the pepper love, hat’s off mon \o_

Thanks :) Just trying to pay it forward, as so many have done for me!

So, are you calling dibs?
I'd love to grow it but I have my hands full trying to isolate the MoA's this year and keeping my Habs from the new additions. Just in case I stored up a lot of my original seed but I'd hate to start over. Hopefully you get some killer pods and I'll take you up on some seed then. For now I have to pass but I still think it's great of you to offer \o_

Well, heck, I'll give 'em a try.

Awesome! They're yours :)

PM me your address, and i'll have them in the mail probably wednesday. All 3 of them...lol

I think the post office lost what you sent me....i talked to both neighbors, one got some of our mail but put it in our box....the other said he got a call from someone 2 miles from here, and they delivered 10 pieces of his mail over there, the street and house # were completely different!....yikes!!...The mail carriers need a talking too really soon!

I'm still hoping they deliver it though ;)
Shoot, I thought they had lost these seeds, then they showed up this afternoon!

Great! Thanks, Chris. PM coming shortly.

That sucks about the mail situation. I mailed that a week ago, so maybe it will show up in a few days. In the meantime, I'll look into what I can do by way of replacements. If they had to lose something, better this than the jigsaw!

We have it narrowed down to the alternate mailman....the full time mail lady has been doing the route for years....but the dude that covers it a day or 2 per week, is awful at the job..... Once, I found the neighbor's mail blowing down the road like a tumbleweed!

If it is a pain to get replacements, don't worry about it. I appreciate you even sending the first one! :)
And perhaps it'll show up tomorrow....stranger things have happened :)

So, planted some garlic almost a year ago....pulled this guy up today to give it a try.
Sure smells like garlic!
Probably make something with it tomorrow :)

IMAG1668_zps57721bfb.jpg

Oh, no, that's not ready to harvest yet for regular garlic. You want to let it grow until the tops fall over and turn yellow. Around here, that's usually in June or July or thereabouts. What you have with that fresh harvest is something rarely available or used. I've only had enough once to harvest it early like this. I steamed it with fresh beets, sugar peas, and carrots. It was good.

Ah....ok i'll have to let it keep growing out there then....well, the other ones ;)

Sooooo......after sowing the seeds from Finland into the germ trays (Yippee!!)

Another non-pepper moment, but worthy of a photo :)

The Boy and I decided making S'Mores would be a grand idea :)
I tried a couple with peanut butter too.....Can't remember if it was Bonnie or Annie who suggested that, but thank you! That was a great idea!!

Now I'm hungry again.

Another point on that young garlic, I kept some of the tops on it when I steamed it. Basically used it like cooking with a green onion.

I like that idea!!

I have some green onions from the market, that I potted up last year, and for a year now we have been cutting off off them for salads, potatoes etc.... like a never ending supply of fresh green onions :)

They live on the back porch, and even took the 7° deep freeze we had this year, no problem!

Good to see them back outside! That smore almost looks like it has spinach on it  . How long 'till you'll roll the dice on putting some in the ground?

Thank you! I am glad they are back put there! way easier to water them and .....well....observe them when they are outside..lol

Hahhahaha... that is an extra crispy marshmallow!!

With the 84° days and 50°+ nights right now, I am super tempted, but not going to risk it until after may 1st.
Lots of them are still little anyway, so bunches of them need to get a bit bigger before they get to hit the dirt :)
