DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

OK, found these white eggs completely covering the top of a serrano leaf!
Those Serranos really are bug magnets....
Anyone know what bug would lay those eggs???

IMAG1670_zpsecfee5b9.jpg

Nah dude...I dunno. Probably not good. Lady Bugs usually lay theirs on the underside and they're yellow. I will hunt around and see what I find on google...

Of course I panicked and pulled the leaf, then put it in a glass jar with a lid...lol
But if I found out they were good bugs, I would get the leaf back out and put it amongst some plants...

Post some pictures when they hatch.

Oh, they will be hatching underground at the landfil!!! LOL

Love the smores shot. I was right there with Shane about the spinach...then I could see it was the crust of the cooked marshmallow.

Sorry I replied late, but got distracted by those darn bug eggs!!

Hmmmm...spinach s'mores sounds terrible...lol

I usually try to cook the marshmallows without burning them, but we wanted to eat the dang things so bad....the boy and I just caught them on fire and went for it...hahaha

I am no expert, but I do believe those eggs are from the dreaded and feared "snowcap bug." You'll see similar eggs here.

One of those pictures a couple of pages back had the desert background of your place. Wow. Desert. Nothingness. You are doing well growing things there.

Bwahahahaha!!! Maybe I should eat them....now I suddenly want some candy ;)

Yep, but surprisingly there are a few things that grow here with zero water....still amazes me that some of the local flora even exists....like desert sage, bullhead stickers, tumbleweeds, etc etc.... Then you add water (or even if you don't add water), and there are tons of weeds???? Where do the darn seeds even come from? LOL
I am still surprised at how much animal life squeaks out an existence here too...
Strange place this high desert is!

This is the first year since i've lived here, that there has been zero rainfall.... I keep thinking we'll get hit with some crazy downpour in May, and get the annual total in one or 2 days....

I'm always too quick to kill bugs, eggs and stuff that looks well eeeekkkkkkkk!!! That said, I think you were thinking straight when you decided to glass jar dem. Most likely not good but always best to find out for sure. BTW I think Andy pegged dem as they look the same as his link. Post pics of the hatched nasties in dat glass when they hatch, lols ...

Have a great day mon!

I had something similar on my maters last year. Found 3 leaves completely covered in eggs, I also found a huge green caterpillar http://fcmosher.hubpages.com/hub/Identify-Those-Caterpillars-Eating-Your-Tomatoes needless to say the eggs were hard pressed to hatch after they met the firepit and well the caterpillar, his luck didnt turn out so well either.

That link you posted shows a hornworm catterpillar...I killed well over a thousand of those last year.
Using a portable black light in total darkness, those things glow like flourescent green monsters!!

The moths those come from are hummingbird size! I have killed 3 of the moths so far this year.
Check google for images of sphinx moth....and if you see any, squish them!!

If I recall correctly, their eggs are bigger than the ones I found....luckily their eggs glow green under the uv light too.
So I have squished plenty of the eggs too.

Now I am tempted to hatch them in the jar, but most likely they would dry up in there since it is sealed....
Luckily I only found that one leaf with them on it!

Or send the eggs to the landfill....lol
Today is trash pickup day ;)
It's your call but next time I find something like that, first I'm going to slap myself for not catching it earlier, lol and second I'm going to see what bugs hatch. I'm the one that always kills first and asks questions later so you gave me a good idea to follow thru with that I had forgotten I did a lot as a young child ...

Edit: That said ^^ the ones you found are most definitely bad bugs ...

I just looked, the eggs turned brown already, so that is that :)
Must have been the dryness, and no fresh air in the jar :)

Agree that they are diff, was just saying that I found something similiar last year on my maters.
Might have to see what it turns into this year if i find one. the kids have a butterfly garden type net that I can put it in. I did this when I was younger with a Monarch caterpillar that I had found. Put it in a container and watched it make its cacoon and then emerge a a butterfly. Was pretty cool.

NOoooooo.... Kill all hornworms!! Those things will mow down your tomatoes and peppers faster than you can imagine!!

LOL!
