DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Congrats Sawyer on the jigsaw seed, I hope you get some killa pods from them & loads of seed to share :)

Chris, nice garlic harvest, I didn’t realize that it took so long to grow garlic but fresh is always worth it. Sawyer has some good tips there, if I ever get more land, that’ll be on my grow list.

Hey Chris if you still have any seeds I'll give it a whirl. Edit: whoops re-read, looks like they're gone..

I agree with Sawyer, grow the garlic until it gives up. I planted at the fall equinox and am still waiting. I do have some Onions falling over, seems early, perhaps all this wind we've had this spring.

Ramon,

I would be interested in how you isolate your plants for true seeds. That's the reason I'm bucket planting one of each variety.

'yall have a great day!

Nothing special like netting but they will be around 100' apart separated by a 5.8' fence and our cottage (small studio building). I think this will do the trick as there’s no way wind can cross pollinate them there. My only concern with this location is that it gets a boat load of sun, I’ve never grown peppers there and with all that sun, they will dry up quick. Once they go to their final pots (15 gallon) which at their present rate of growth shouldn’t be long, I'll make the move. I'll first move them close to this new spot and gradually give them more sun to see how they react and how quick the pots dry out. During this period of solar adjustment there will only be a fence between them but still around 75' apart and unless we get a hurricane they should be fine because the wind is blocked very well there (building in front of them, building behind them, with tall fences to the right and left). I hope this does the trick ...

OK, so I ordered the just released Fatalii Gourmet Jigsaw seeds from Fatalii.net a couple weeks ago. (couldn't help myself)
10 seeds were 20 Euros....works out to avout $2.60 per seed...lol .... Most I have ever paid for a seed!!
5 seeds per pack.....

Anyway, I figure on putting 7 of the seeds in the germ tray tonight.....

The other 3 seeds, I am offering to one of you nice people who post and interact in my glog :)
First one to call dibs, just pm me an address, and I'll stick them in the mail for you :)
All I ask is:
1. You try to grow them this season.
2. You either live in a long season area (so have time to grow them), or grow them indoors.

This way, there might be some seeds to share (after all, in the desert here, you just never know what might happen to pepper plants!!)

Damn I dont get on the computer lastnight and I miss this GAHHHHHHH such is my luck, maybe next year LOL
Looking good Chris, have had my plants out the past few days for a few hours after work. I was bringing them in and putting in the basement. Now just set them on the table over night, can see a huge differance in teh plants being upstairs as opposed to the cooler basement.
Oh and whoever said about the peanutbutter on teh smores, I will be trying that this summer, sounds delicious

Ramon, you might want to read this paper (pdf) from CPI. My understanding is that it's not the wind that's the issue with out-crossing, but rather insects. Given that peppers are self-fertile, even plants right next to each other will produce mostly true-to-type seeds. But to be sure you have isolated seeds, you need at least to isolate individual flowers... or limbs... or whole plants... or whole rows. Two ways of isolating individual flowers I've read about are placing half a clear gelatin capsule over the flower before it opens, or gluing the petals together. I haven't tried either but will experiment with both this year, as well as bagging limbs and placing covers over whole plants and rows. At least, that's the plan.

OK, Jigsaw seeds are now on their way to the post office in town :)

Sawyer, they should get there friday or so :) Hopefully the rain lets up, and doesn't slow things down!

Maybe we should cross the Jigsaw with the Reaper, and call it the "Puzzled Reaper"...lol
It could be the new world's hottest, a cross of 2 that could be the new world's hottest...bwahahahaha

Sawyer, thank you for the clarification and link to the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, New Mexico State University, that’s awesome reading. Maybe I’ll do the cover up method one of these days. That said, I don’t think I’m gluing peddles or covering my plants this time, I love to see them naked. If a fence and building don’t keep them safe it’s not in the cards for my MoA’s :/ This also means my JA Habs will end up getting crossed too, double :/ :/ Luckily I have a few MoA seeds left and I have a lot of my original JA Hab seeds stored. This means I might go exclusive next year to stock up on more seed or only grow my habs & moa's with covers, thanks that gives me a lot to think about for next year.

Chris, the stuff on the Jigsaw is great! I had already read the thread when you first got them but not the page. I’ll definitely give that a read later today, tks! And that cross is wicked Mwuuhahahahaha!

I also put a pack of Takanotsume seeds in there :) I had a whole extra pack, and figured you might need some japanese peppers....lol

HAhahaha :)

or we could call it "The Hottest Pepper In The World Pepper" and really piss people off...LOL

I'm just glad he released the seeds...I remember seeing that article a while ago, and wishing for them!!

Man I can't wait to start seeing some green there in all that desert landscape. I'll be interested to see how that new Fatalii does, following!

Thanks! I can't wait either! All that is out in the ground right now is Turnips, some garlic and some onions.....
When it gets all nice and green it's like an oasis in the sand...lol
We even have a picnic table out there so we can relax in the green zone and watch things grow :)

I read the pdf this afternoon, hmm not enough land to space them. I may try pollinating by hand, I can just see my trying to put little condoms on the flowers, ooops broke another one..

Chris, how long until dirt day real soon eh? Then you my friend will be one busy hombre!

I'm spending two hours a day in the garden and the weeding is falling behind...labor of love..

LOL Ramon

Dirt day is coming....i could probably start now, but nervous to plant before may.
We are in a cycle of 80+ days and 50+ nights, for the next week, but that could change :(

Oh....When/If I get pods from Jigsaws, i'll send some seeds your way ;)

Sounds like a toss up, what do you prefer ... pasties or bra ;) :D

LOL....both of course

Thanks, I posted this morning and then went back and read it again....whoops. We get up at 4AM so we go to bed early on the weekdays so we're not the walking dead...LOL.

I can usually push the plant out here, but am setup for a frost. As much as you have to plant dirt day is going to be dirt days!

Glad you liked the peanut butter smores!

On the garlic, it is usually harvested late summer here, but when the plants send up the scapes (flower stalks) in May/June, those can be harvested. Here's a link with some recipe ideas for them:

http://www.garlicfar...com/recipes.htm

Ah ha! I had a feeling it was your idea on the S'Mores :) Those were great

Oh, and I bookmarked that website for future use :)

And if you don't harvest the scapes to eat, you should pinch them off anyway, so the plant doesn't waste energy that could be going into the bulb.

Yep, they are putting out scapes now....Guess I better eat them...lol
