DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Looking good mon, tell the woman folk happy mama's days :) Don't know how you guys do it, it's way too hot there ... if it were me I'd be building a pool for daily cooling off. AFAIK we've not hit higer than 96 Degrees In The Shade ;)
»» Foobar2k ::: Third World - 96 Degrees In The Shade (1977) - 07 - 96 Degrees In The Shade ::: 2:04/4:28 (••••••••••) ::: 484 kbps «« ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪

Well, we have to hide inside when it gets really hot....it'll get up to 110°+ sometimes....
Luckily we have use of the relatives pool, in town, anytime we need to cool down :)

We hit over 105 on a rare day, most summer days are 93-98 with most days around 94. It's what put me on an early schedule. Get outside at sun up and work until 11 or so..

Yep, when it gets hot, my gal banned me from being out there in the midday sun...lol
So mornings and evenings are prime gardening time :)

OK, I counted the maters....I was wrong.... there aren't 300

There are 340... bwahahahahaha

341 including the cherry tomato plant my gal recieved for her birthday today from her cousin...hahaha

Since I have been posting alot about tomatoes lately...

Here are my 2 freshly sprouted Ramone's JA Habs looking nice and happy :)

IMAG1738_zps6be7103c.jpg

And just for Shane's dog Porter..... "It's a freakin' Indian Carbon Bhut Jolokia man"...hahaha
Everytime I see one of my carbons, I think of that Porter quote :)

IMAG1739_zps90ae8c29.jpg

Don't forget that dumb mutts cheesy smirk when you say that! Haha...good on ya. My BJIC is one of the last hold out setting pods. She's still a beauty though! She's trying now...the mama plant's pods were some of the gnarliest I've seen. Hope she grows true!

Spent all day out in garden #1 Trenching rows, and then planted a few peppers

So I planted all those cups of peppers, until it got too dark to see...
But they all got in the ground :)
No photos of them in ground till tomorrow when the sun comes up ;)

Sweet! I hope yours grow true... and mine also...

I hope mine do as well as yours looks!
I think I have 10 or so of them...all little guys though....that photo is the newest one.

Figured I better mention, the daughter helped me plant those peppers! :)
It took a little convincing to get her out in the garden/dirt, but she p,anted em like a champ :)

Also, there were maybe 700 plants... not sure...didn't count...lol
But I do know that they were the sweets, milds, mediums etc... mainly anuums.
And of course a few fun things too, but that is the kid friendly garden.
I wouldn't want any of the neighbor's kids to chomp a superhot on accident!!

Oh, and pod update... about the only things setting pods are anaheims and serranos...
2 of the varieties I almost didn't bother to grow!

Hopefully you guys/gals forgive me, but my arms are too tired after all that planting, to type much...lol
So will have to reply on your glogs tomorrow :)

Haha...borg sowing now borg planting! Gonna be tight in there, but you're halfway there. The chinenses need a bit more room than the annuums. Looking good man! 700 WOW! I am growing a few anaheims...but only because I couldn't initially find any Numex types...got a couple Big Jim's later on and will ship you out some seeds once I get some, much superior pepper!

Wow. And my wife thinks I'm nuts!!!! Good luck with the hot weather

Thanks!
I find that some varieties will still set pods in the crazy heat, but not the chinense ones....
So an enormous fall harvest is what i'm really looking at....
The key to success here is close planting, windbreaks and water...lots and lots of water!!

My gal thinks I am nuts too!! And obsessed... :)

Yep, garden #1 is a Borg collective of tomatoes and peppers!! hahaha
But that is the key to survival here...more plants to work together for shade and resistance to the wind :)
I was just estimating the #'s planted, but I think it is around 700 in there, I borg sowed a ton of non chinense stuff.
And looking at the porch, it looks like a little over half of the plants are inground...
I don't think I have any numex types, but I could be wrong... I have lists and charts of all the varieties and planting locations.

I would love more seeds.... but you probably know that...lol
When I get pods, let me know if there are any varieties you would like seeds for! I should have lots and lots and lots of them ;)

I'm thinking the chinense gardens (#2 & #3) will have lots more room per plant, since I packed everything else into garden #1
I just need to clean the areas, till a little, and put in the irrigation....probably later this week i'll start all that.
Unfortunately we have a busy schedule the next couple days, and the boy (my helper for that stuff) had the flu, and is in no condition to dig, or glue pvc pipe.....

700 wow! Everything looks great, not sure if I could handle that many plantings in a day ... lol.
Yeah, it was crazy.... my back hurts, my arms are exhausted....an ant stung me on the knee, and somehow even my right foot is sore....lol
But it had to be done. Now I just get to water them and watch them grow.
However, the 2 chinense gardens still need a ton of stuff done before I can plant them out.....

And then there is garden #4.... squashes, cukes, melons etc... all the sprawling food plants.... I have to prep that area too....

Looking good Chris
Will be planting mine out this weekend. Should only be about 40 plants or so as some just arent ready yet. Will plant them up to bigger pots though. Also bought 2 maters and a cherry mater plant this past weekend, they will be going in this weekend also along with a bell pepper that i bought.

I still have a ton of stuff to do, but when it is in the ground, the hard part is done, and I can just water and watch it all grow :)

I'm really glad to see things coming together! Tons of work!

And once planted, yes, water and wait. Then comes harvest and putting everything up. Borg Harvest?

That's just starting for us. Towards the end ya just start looking at the tiller..wanting to bury it all..oh wait still more stuff out there...LOL

yep, at the end (fall) it should be quite crazy....daily pepper and tomato harvesting.

I might set up a roadside pepper/tomato stand in the driveway, just to recoup some garden expense, and...well...get rid of some of the surplus...lol

Not sure if I mentioned this before or not but back like 10 yrs ago I grew a cherry tomato plant that i had submitted into the Guiness book of world records to see if it was the biggest tomato plant. It measured 20'4" tall at last measurement. Record was over 65', anyhow I was picking a crisper drawer full of maters every few days. I got another one this year. Cant wait to see how that thing does. Have it area all picked out already. Will be canning, selling, giving away alot LOL

Dang! That cooler weather. Mine are already hating the heat.

Chris, Posted in a hurry earlier during a quick break, was nodding off loading software today...stare at the blue line.....had to wake up.

Anyway! Looking Good!

Hope you have a killer harvest.

Thanks guys!!

After mom's day, a birthday , a party for visiting relatives, and a funeral, I might have some time to work on preparing the other 3 gardens....maybe...then I could start putting the chinense varieties in the ground :)
