Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)


Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Well, I got the 300, or so, tomato plants in the ground today!!
I am pretty stoked about that.
And while it was a 93 degree day... a bit hot for planting out, but it had to be done :)
We are going to add trellises in the next couple days.... not tomorrow though because it is mothers day, and also my gal's birthday :)

Then we went and got the supplies for the water irrigation for the other 3 garden areas :dance:
So, I am getting closer to peppers getting in the ground :)

We have a trellis system we are going to try out...should help... a little....lol

Regardless, it will be like you suggested :) Help, I am lost in a way to densely planted tomato patch.

I'll have to actually count them and see how many of them there are...in a few days...after any weeklings succumb to the desert!
 
Heck yeah, I had bad luck with the cages....the metal seemed to kill the plants too...

For the trellises, we got a bunch of 6' bamboo poles, and lots of thick soft chord...we'll see how well it works...lol

Last year I ended up just letting them sprawl on the ground, and it was crazy going tomato hunting!

The Mater plants look quite happy today, I started counting them, less than halfway and I got to 136, will finish counting tonight or tomorrow.

Ah... there's that shade tree. Wish I had one. I wanted to put up the shade cloth this weekend but it's too windy.

Soil is nice and dark, is this the color? or is it from the amendments?

The soil has no amendments...last year we used a tractor and a dump trailer to bring soil in from the back where cattle were for 20 years.
We laid down about 8" of it over the 1600 sq feet of area.
So the dark color is from that and being wet from watering :)

As a bonus it is my gal's bday today too :)
So we are in town at a relative's home having a pool party :)
Which is nice since it is about 95° right now!!

It was funny planting yesterday....
Started with little spades, but too slow.....

So got out a post hole digger, and we went into high speed planting mode....lol
 
Just give them extra water!.
They should make it.

Plus I figure the stressing them makes them stronger in the end.

I just looked, my phone says it is 103°, and the weather station is within 2 miles of the house.
But that is at a small plane airport, and they seem to be a couple degrees hotter,day and night, due to all the pavement there.

Shoot, with all this warm weather this week, I have been running the irrigation in garden #1 in the morning, and in the evening....porch plants (all the peppers) are getting water once a day....

I'm going to put the sweet and some milder peppers in the ground in garden #1 probably starting tomorrow :)

Then it will be irrigation installing time for garden #2, #3, & #4....
put up a run of fencing on one side of garden #4.

Then massive hot pepper planting in gardens #2 & #3 .
Labeling 100 varieties is something I still have to figure out too.....

#4 will be the location for squashes, melons, cukes etc... all the sprawling stuff...
 
I agree, they may be sagging, but as long as they are hardened off and have the moisture they will perk right back up.

Hey I've broken out the post hole digger to plant many times. Especially useful for planting the taters.

That hole digger made it sooooo much faster!

I will use the heck out of it for pepper planting too.

Doesn't this look much nicer than the dry sandy photos I usually post?? lol

We did that yesterday too!
Picked up another roll.
We ziptie it to the west fence as a wind blocker, and it works great, plus makes some shade in the afternoon.
There was a small section that needed it still. So i'll have to get that on the fence in the next day or two also...
 
Looking good mon, tell the woman folk happy mama's days :) Don't know how you guys do it, it's way too hot there ... if it were me I'd be building a pool for daily cooling off. AFAIK we've not hit higer than 96 Degrees In The Shade ;)

We hit over 105 on a rare day, most summer days are 93-98 with most days around 94. It's what put me on an early schedule. Get outside at sun up and work until 11 or so..
