DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Well.....my gal told me I had to make mac and cheese for dinner.
Sooooo.... I enhanced mine with about half a manzano pepper chopped up :)
And it was much much better!!
IMAG1715_zps418a6b80.jpg

Here are my tomato seedlings, maybe 300 or so of them.....
Finishing the hardening off, and will hopefully get them in the ground in the next few days.
IMAG1718_zpsb89efba2.jpg

I'm sort of near Smokemaster in the San Fernando Valley, where we are supposed to hit 100f on Monday.

Yep, gonna warm up here too....better than the cold :)

Looking good chris,
I was going to do the maters this year but will just get a plant or 2 from the store. Might get some extra, going to be growing 2 in those topsy turvey things and not sure hwo that will turn out. Cant be without maters for sauces and such LOL.

I started 4 more seeds since last time I said I was done sowing LOL, put 2 Peach bhuts ad 2 7-pot douglahs in some soil trying to germ now. Guessing I should have something by the end of the week.
I did post a pic in my glog of the Brain Strain that I was torturing. He is going strong now, all kids of new growth after being in the ICU for a few days

Chris, Great looking mac & cheese … I do the same when we make some but I add peppers, onions, garlic & whole little Everglade wilds … great stuff you gots going :)

Mato seedlings look great, wish I had more room to grow mas but I don’t want to cut back on any peppers, lols. Have a great weekend mon!

Uh, dude, Chris, those are not mater seedlings! Love that m'n cheese/manzano shot!

LOL, ok, maybe they are plants now, but there are a dozen or so in there that might qualify as seedlings :)

best of luck with yur maters.

Thank you!
Hopefully I get some time to plant them in the next couple days :)

Hahaha, yep, can't stop sowing pepper seeds, even though I need to stop, and what I really need to sow are the pumpkins, squashes, cukes, etc...etc...

1200+ plants and more germination! Go get, em! Wow, your grow is going to dwarf PeriPeri's!

PeriPeri has spectacular plants though!!
Mine will be numerous, but smaller and beaten by wind and sun...lol

I ended up adding some roasted chicken chunks into that mac and cheese too... you have to do something to make that stuff more edible!!
Yep, I would pick peppers over tomatoes too, but the rest of the family wants spaghetti sauce..... plus fresh salsa requires maters :) and I do like fresh salsa!!

So here was dinner tonight...
Casero cheese quesadillas with homemade salsa (using maters and red jalapenos from last year), guacamole, and the boy and I sprinkled on chocolate habanero powder that Sawyer was kind enough to share with me! The boy even licked the spoon we were using to dole out the habby powder...lol...I think he liked that stuff :)

Maters yer gonna have! So dirt day is upon you?

Betcha you're mo than ready!

Nice way to spice up M&C!

Yep, dirt day is beginning this weekend...still have to finish getting gardens 2,3,4 ready, but #1 is getting planted....so far turnips, leeks, kohlrabi, lettuces, radishes, onions, lemongrass.....
And the maters going in probably saturday morning :) Then have to sow kale, chard, aztec spinach, other greens, wonderberries, vine peach, and a bunch of other goodies :)

Most of the peppers need to get a bit bigger before plant out, but maybe 1/3-2/5 are big enough :)

I am likely going to be swimming in tomatoes.....lol...but that is a good thing!!

That M&C was actually pretty good like that :)

A delicious culinary masterpiece.

Thank you!
My gal made them, one of the things in her cooking repertoire :)
Fast, easy and tasty.
I ate about 7 of those things...lol

OK, I figured I better post a few photos of some of the nicer little ones :)

A pair of Datils... Loving these because every one of my Datils looked very iffy on survival, but they all look like this now???

And here are some Red Bhuts, some of the many many from this strain that the seeds were gifted to me by Meinchoh (A big thank you!!)

Ok, I shared this in another thread, but figured I would put it here too....

Remember Bubba from Forest Gump? Shrimp this and shrimp that etc etc....

My Gal and the Kids recently started calling me "Bubba Pepper"....supposedly I say the word pepper way too often...LOL!!

Can't wait to see them in dirt and loving it, Bubba CPep !! But, at the rate of maters I got, and varieties--aka--never doing this again, even after I give some away to folks in unassisted-living-retirement places, and give some away to my brothers, two cousins, I still have too damn many maters . . . and probably peppers too, were that possible. Because around here, SQUASH, but I do make a nice zuke-squash relish that's hotter 40 hells, not that they want that except for unks, cousin, one brother  LOVE IT that your son can enjoy the :hot:with you. Hurts loving peppers by yaself in a household, making everything mild because only way can fix an infused dish is not to fix one. :mope:

You growing the choc hab? One of my favs! Makes amazing powder and sauce! Chil' the sauces/powders one can make with that! (Sadly lol, not), requires sampling pods from the plants as some are smokier than others, some can be a touch floral, so great excuse reason to EAT them in the raw as taste tests for sauces and powders. But if high off pepper, never go in and cook up or dehydrate, smoke, grind, blend then. The opioid reaction was much with me when make first batch of Harold St. Barts/pinapple/mango sauce: I put 30 big deseeded HSB's in the pot, and didn't wear gloves. I smoked them first, was kinda about to trip over smoker . . . hmm. Sauce was just too damn hot. And I got 5 pints out of it. But when watered down with pineapple/mango juice, puts love on chix or fish! That food porn with powder sounds/looks delicious!

So glad you have a son to love that with you!

Chris Bubba Pepper great foodie mon!!! Bet it was super tasty too ^_^ ... Nice pictures of the little ones, they look very healthy. Some of the rounder leaves on the Red Bhut look completely different than the leaves on mine, can’t wait to see what pods we both produce ... Have a good great one brethren!!!
