DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Dinner looks good!

You don't need a fence that can keep rabbits out.  You just need a fence that will keep your gang of dogs in.  Would they just dig up your plants?  If not, they might love the adventure.

You still might have to sit out all night with a .22 and shoot one accidentally because you thought it looked like a mountain lion.  I mean destroying your plants?  That's personal right there.

LOL, the dogs sleep in our room at night :)
Yeah, the dogs would dig them up, trample them, and generally destroy the garden if I put them in there...hahaha

I told my gal I wanted to snipe the rabbit with the .22, but she forbade it :(

I'm hoping this is the round of rabbit proofing that works... I'll know in the morning.

At some point i'll either keep them out, or get super fed up, and sniping would be more likely.

Fun little update:

Figured I should post a couple photos of the newer babies that are still inside under lights....

Here is the 4 Cot Moruga Satan's :) Just about to show it's true leaves.

HAHAHA!! I'm done... I hope....plenty of seeds in the germ trays still.

I am saying the same thing Chris but ya know, everytime I check on things in the gradens I see empty space and think man I bet a plant could fit in there.  I do have one plant that doesnt look like it is going to make it. With all the rain we just got the past few days it isnt looking good. If it doesnt make it, I will be starting a replacement for it LOL.

Sprouts look great, baby JA Habs looking very smexy, did you sneak some peppers into dem cookies, hahaha … I think you should listen to Shane, a few more wouldn’t hurt anyone, lolz. Worst case they could replace the rabbit damage. Have a great weekend & memorial day!

OK, quick update....

I think the rabbot proofing may have worked!!
It's hard to tell since there was a lot of destruction before, but some of the snipped/stripped plants look like they are getting a little new hrowth peaking out of the stems :)
Hopefully a good percentage recover (fingers crossed) especially since the vermin laid waste to a few types of sweet peppers, jalapenos and fresnos....

I think i'm most bummed about the black jalapeno massacre, I was looking forward to those, and I think maybe one of them might have a shot at recovering....

Today I rabbit proofed the red bhut garden #3, and the water system seems to be working well, trenches are leveled out pretty well.
I'm thinking tomorrow I will plant out the many many red bhut seedlings/plants, and hopefully when they get in the ground they start growing faster!! Some of them are little buggers...lol

After that, I really need to get the goat pen garden #2 situated (for chinenses) because the plants for that area are begging to get out there!!

I did hear you say mama didn’t want you to use a 22 but I didn’t read anything bout her outlawing a wabbit snare or trap. While I’ve only trapped raccoons, I can’t imagine it being much different and with a relocation she should be happy with dat. Now let me tell ya about my rabbit & pepper stew recipe ;)

I’m sad to read about the plant destruction, hope your fav’s make it … have a tremendous holiday weekend brethren!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!! Ok, I really think I am done sowing seeds!
That being said, I still have tons of stuff in the germ trays, so there should be a few replacements.... in #'s at least.
But not really replacements for some of the varieties that got massacred.
I'mm hoping a some of the stems can put out some new growth, and they survive.....

Rabbits.... I'm not sure, but I think it may have somehow gotten in yet again.
So now I am going to use my "squirrelanator" live trap, baited with juicy iceberg lettuce.
If I catch the offender, it will be relocated either a few miles away, or to a stewpot....lol
That update,.will be in the morning. ;)

Dang wabbits!

A few years ago I had a couple of hundred pounds of oats planted, I guess a 1/4 acre maybe more, it was raining that fall and they looked great. Only thing is they were cropped like a golf course....and of course it was the wabbits. I setup my truck with a red lens-ed Q-beam and left a round in my Ruger .204, every once in a while I'd sneak out and shine and shoot. Neighbor a 1/4 mile away came by and asked "what are you shooting at so late?". I explained and he looked at me kinda funny. I must say it was fun and  a payback. Little buggers. Finally for the garden the new fence ($175) and the sacrete worked to keep them out....for now...

OK, Dinner last night....
Grilled Cheese with Ham and Douglah powder :)

Dinner tonight......
Neighbor gave me a couple of uncooked steaks....
Turned out to be Filet Mignon! :)
So I sliced it thin, sauteed it with garlic, onion and Jalapenos from the garden :)
Refried some kidney beans, added more Jalapeno.
Then made the best Burritos ever!!!

Ate one before I even took the photo...hahaha

AND!!!! The Red Bhut Garden is now planted!!!
There are:
93  from Meinchoh
26 from pepperlover.com
101 of the Canadian Express
For a total of 220 :)

Here is the rabbitproof wall for garden #3 (Red Bhut Garden).... fingers crossed!

Planted a few more things into Garden #1 :)

Here is the Squirrelinator

And here it is baited up.... I hope I catch that varmint tonight...and that it actually fits in the opening...lol
I figure iceburg lettuce and carrot shavings have got to be more appealing than my pepper plants!!

Also, spent a couple hours digging and moving dirt in the Goat Pen Garden #2 for the Chinenses...
Still not done, but getting closer!! That one is way more work than I thought it would be...
High spots, low spots, areas thick with crumbled hay fluff....Gee Whiz.....

And I haven't even begun Garden #4's irrigation, ditches, one side needs fence...etc....
That one is for sprawling plants like squashes, melons, cukes etc....

Good luck with your trapping! I trapped about a dozen pack rats out of my garden last year. They were mainly getting at my tomatoes. 220 ghosts...absolutely ridiculous! Love it!!!
Rats.... I hate those guys!!

Ghosts... well we'll see how many grow nicely...lol... but with that many I should get a few ;)
And that was only the red ones.

I also have to plant out a bunch of other Various Jolokias :)
Chocolate, Long Brown, Peach, White, Yellow, Orange, Bih, Romy's Choc Bhut x Yellow 7, Giant, and Porter's favorite.... the Freakin' Indian Carbon....hahahahaha
But my back is killing me from working on the goat pen garden where they are all going....
A couple more sessions of moving dirt around, a good soaking or three, and i'll be ready to plant out the rest of the peppers!!!

That includes bunches of 7 Pots, Various Scorps, Reapers, Tons of Habbys, etc... etc.... etc....
I suspect about 300-400,or so, more plants to get in the ground...

Oh, and I need to figure out where to put the Manzanos Denniz sent me....lol

That made me tired just typing that!

OK, it must be the three large vodka and orange juice drinks my gal has made me so far this fin saturday night, but after my last posts, I had to go count the plants on the porch....lol

Anyway, I counted 32 sprouts under the lights, and 360 various size plants in cups, or pots, on the porch.... virtually all Habanero to Superhot in heat level :)

So add that to the 210 I planted today, and the difference between that and the 1285 last count (pre rabbit) means there were around 673
In garden #1 before the great rabbit pepper massacre of 1013....lol
I figure there must still be at least 600 left in garden #1 post rabbit attack....

So 600 + 220 + 392 = 1212 :)
Still over 1000, so things are looking good!

OK, THERE IS MY FIRST MILDLY DRUNKEN/BUZZED POST OF 2013.... ENJOY....LOL

I might need a few more plants.....

Oh wait, that must be some kind of subliminal hypnotism perpetuated by Shane.....lol

Hey Shane, tell Porter that I think I must have around 20 "Freakin' Indian Carbon Bhut Jolokias"....bwahahahhaa
I forever shall think of them as Porter's favorite pepper plant :)

Haha...Porter was not amused! I have had the best luck deterring critters with bulk cayenne powder dusting around the perimeter and target areas...I spread a thick red dusting on everything I want protected. Works very well.
