DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

wow, pretty impressive garden!!! I wish I could move out of town soon and settle at the outskirts of town and have a large garden   But your garden is mad large! Insane! I´ll be watching this thread!

Even though the rabbit is annoying, be kind to it ;) Nature first, remember Homo Sapiens don't fit in the complexity of nature, so well need to adapt as good as we can without destroying the balance ;)

Don't want to get into opinions but we are balance sometimes. Rabbits populate at a much larger rate than most animals so they become prey to a wide range of animals when opportunity presents itself. If lions populated that quickly there would be something to prey on them too. Excellent garden Chris tough climate though

Haha...Porter was not amused! I have had the best luck deterring critters with bulk cayenne powder dusting around the perimeter and target areas...I spread a thick red dusting on everything I want protected. Works very well.
Hmmm, I sprayed everything with habanero juice, and it just laughed at me and ate the eggplants (which were sprayed too.
Under other circumstances I might respect that rabbit.....lol

Hahaha @ Porter :)
I'll.be sure to post Indian Carbon progress for him ;)

Thank you, it's a ton of work right now, bit will be so very worth it later on!

Yeah, I prefer to live and let live....
The rabbits and squirrels seem to be a little more populous this year, they are definately out of balance right now.
There are coyotes here, but not in the yard.

Plus both of those rodentia can carry fleas, rabies, and the plague.... yikes!!

First choice is deterents and fencing to keep em out.
Second is trapping and relocating.
Last would be lethal options, possible involving dinner.

Thank you! It's coming along steadily!
I started the trench for the irrigation in the large garden #4 today. (Sprawling plants will go there)
Slowly working on the chinense goat pen garden #2
Sowed some more non pepper seeds in #1 this week. (Lettuces, Radishes and Cilantro)
Planting 7 mullein plants on the side of the house today, the leaves make a good tea for respiratory help (coughs etc...)
Probably plant the Sage, Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, Basil, and Thai Basil plants in the herb bed today too. :)

I'm all for the balance in nature.

The  balance is out of whack, man killed off the predators and won't allow them near their homes.

Chris, They are Mas hungry, so when you plant you are advertising. Over here...food

When we have a rainy year they are happy and leave my stuff alone. Not when it's dry.

I definitely prefer to make it so they can't get to my grow versus eliminating them. Actually that attempt was futile...

Pics dude, we need pics hahaha.

have a great weekend!

Sounds like a good setup I planted my watermelon radishes a couple weeks ago they are getting pretty big now what types of radishes you planting?
It seems to work pretty good here...It's funny planting in the ditches instead of the mounds, but it is the only way to get enough water to soak in!
Japanese Daikon Radishes, and Easter Egg Radish Blend :)

Yeah, there is no eliminating the Rodentia....At best you can thin em out a little....
I am convinced the animal life can smell the water from a mile away too!!

OK... Your wish is my command...

View of Garden #1 from the back porch :)

360 Chinenses on the porch...These are what is left to be planted, other than the 32 seedlings in the dining room under the lights...

The Herb area.... the big guy in the front is Daisies that my stepson gave my gal last year for her birthday... I overwintered them, and they are growing nicely.
In there is Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Thai Basil, Sage.

Mullein

The Red Bhut Garden looks good after a day of being in the ground :)

Started the trench for the irrigation pipe/bubblers in Garden #4 (for sprawling plants) This area is pretty big :)
It's a bit compacted, so water is vital to soften things up!

And last.... This little guy was on patrol this morning when I went out to check garden #1 :)

Looking good!

Can't wait to see all those Bhut's take off.

What are your temps this time of year?

You do realize you're fixin to get real busy here soon. I'm hoping the corn and maties are done by the end of next week so I can do other things I've been neglecting.

Thanks! I hope those Bhuts take off now that they are planted out!!

It has been 70-80 lately, But temps have been swinging anywhere from 67-96 in the last month...lol
Still a couple months till it gets really hot here.

Yeah, it is going to be pretty busy even after planting....Watering, weeding, watching it grow, and then BOOM... Harvesting stuff and figuring out where to put it all....hahahaha :)

I just realized I need to get chard and kale sown too....and 3 overwintered pepper plants that are still in pots need to go into the ground.....

OK, got a ton of stuff done in the garden locations today...
And I am SORE!!!

Prepped their area and planted out some culinary herbs.

Dug most of the trench for irrigation system in garden #4 (Sprawling plants garden)

Spent another 1 1/2 hours moving dirt in the goat pen garden #2.... man it is way more work in that one than I thought it would be...lol

But I think the Chinenses will be happy out there when I finally finish their home....

OK, I just looked under the lights, and here is that 4 cot Moruga Satan's :)
Shane, it looks like you were right... 2 sets of true leaves!
So "conjoined twins" is what it looks like :)
Two for the price of one....lol

Just a question, Chris: is there ANY vegetable or herb that exists, anywhere, that you have NOT planted?! ;) Dang, I love it!
Hahahaha, yes, there are millions of veggies and herbs I have never planted ;)
But I am trying to go crazy with new varieties, planting and expanding this year :)

Tuesday I plan on making a short trip to Baker's Creek Heirloom seeds to get my favorite Lemon and lime Basil and maybe some lemon grass seeds to back up the plants that I have, I spotted a rabbit the other day, but they have a hard time getting into the garden, but they like eating the tender grass. I did find one new rat hole so I fixed up a special meal of corn meal, powdered sugar and quick set cement they love the stuff, a few hours latter they're a rat rock, safe and effective.
All that food you've been cooking makes me hungry, I've been put on a baby food diet till I get a small tumor out of my guts then I have to wait till I get the ok from my doctor just to go back to real food. My doctor told me that I can't have any hot peppers or hot pepper powder for awhile after that,  as it is I'm going through withdraws as I miss my Thai and Vietnamese food. So I'm one unhappy camper.
I'll be back on the hot stuff by the time I have ripe pods, I love all the plants you have I wish I had the room for more than what I have as it is I'm always giving extra plants away.

Oh wow, I like the idea of the rat rocks...ll

Dang, I am sorry to hear about the stomache trouble... I hope you heal quickly!!
I can't imagine not getting to eat peppers :(

I sowed some lemongrass seeds recently, I sure hope the pop up soon.
Lemongrass tea is great!

I really need to get a ton of basil going too, when tomato harvest happens, i'm going to need a LOT of fresh basil for the pasta sauce production!!!

Dang away on family time the last day and I’m pages behind. Everything looks great and unbelievable progress, love the picture updates, telling a great tale of supper heat and great veggies!!!!

I keep thinking how Habanero infused rabbit would taste on the grill with sofrito starter mojo, corn, some fresh veggies and black beans & rice. BTW I’m not kidding, hehehe

Really cool on the twins! Congrats papa! I read about your hab drizzle before...I think dusting works better because they don't just smell it and avoid...it works into their fur and noses. Did I miss it or has there been action in the trap?

I will keep in mind the dusting, for any more rabbit invasions. I will need a lot of powder to cover such a large area...lol
I better stock up ;)

The defensive perimeter seems to be working now....Now invasion be rabbit ever since the night I put the trap out.
So the trap looked just as I had left it in the morning...food bait still there....
I guess I got all the possible entry points dealt with :) woohoo!!

WOOHOO!!

I may have won the battle, but too early to declare victory....lol
Good news for me is that the ground hog is gone from under the shed, bad news... I now have rabbits and baby rabbits under the shed. UGGGGGG
Went out and bought a wrist rocket and some ammo for it. Figured I would get the bigger ones, well I cant bring myself to take down the babies yet. They havent gotten into the garden and hope they dont. I have the fencing that is small holes on the bottom and larger holes on the top. Fingers crossed
