Devv-2017-Having a good time in the dirt

Another season has come and gone. Time to start a new one!
 
Although I did already a few weeks ago :shh: . After last years dismal (late) start I jumped in a bit early to insure I could have viable plants come dirt day. I can always cut them back, if I need to. I have to compile a list yet, but I'm growing the full spectrum. Sweets, to supers, based upon what we will actually use. Most of my list is to make LB happy; I'm really glad to see her infuse peppers in more and more dishes. Can't beat that when the wife takes interest ;)

Not the best pic; but the shelf is being sketchy, and I don't need all the babies bouncing off the floor.

Don't worry about me in the heat (I do appreciate it). I'm well conditioned to our environment, and no longer push it like I did when I was 3 times younger ;) ;)
 
On the weekends, I'm out at first light and go until noon or 2pm depending on what I'm doing. Nothing strenuous after it warms up. I hydrate and come in to cool off when needed. Nowadays certainly beats the 11-12 hour shifts in a tin building that hit 117° with me leaning over a 230° engine :rolleyes: :crazy: .

Things are going better this late in the season than I had imagined, I should have seen those results quite a while ago.
 
The garden work never stops, getting ready for next year. It should be much better now that the RCW has matured. No more tilling; I have already tilled in well over 100 yards of shredded goodies over the last 30 months. And added 30 more on top this spring which is breaking down very nicely ;)

I'm sure the pubes will kick into overdrive in September. When do you usually get your first frost?

I just love to be outside "doing something" even if it's turning over the compost in the bins. Come September 15th the garden, what's left, as some just fade away in the heat, will kick back in and actually do better than the spring garden. Can you believe the farmers around here plant cukes around the 25th of August?

I brought the trailer to work today, can't resist the free RCW. Medina County gives it away and loads it using a 3 yard loader. This is my 4th load since spring, roughly 8 yards here ;)
 
It will be put to good use!

Rick (solelri) sent me this Fig plant he harvested via air layering. It arrived today in perfect condition. ;)  I potted it immediately after getting home. It has a nice robust root system.

I believe it was mid January when he sent me 5 dormant cuttings. This one took, and I'm sure if I knew better as to how to get them to take, I would have been more successful.

In less than 60 days we will get a break. Bhut it will be high 90's to mid 100's until then. Hopefully this year will be like last year and I'll be pulling pods until January ;)

It should last, and that's what I'm aiming for. The construction of the RainBird gear is stout! And the prices are super reasonable.
 
You're very welcome on the pods, I wish I had more to send. Bhut that's a good pull for this time of year with the heat. Come later this season I should be able to fill a larger box ;)

A few pics. Things are tapering off with the summer heat, but will resume in 60 days as long as I can keep them alive. I keep saying I'm not going to do this again. Bhut spank me, I can't stop myself :rolleyes:

ScotchBrains, a nice pepper! And It produces nicely. This one was a really late start and is in a #7 pot. I'm having to water it every other day.

Very few pods left out there, bhut we do have flowers. It would be really cool if they set. Bhut I don't really expect much until September.
 
I'm heading out Thursday for a family reunion in Myrtle Beach; it should be a blast ;)

I agree! I'm gearing more towards peppers in that heat range as they're so much easier to eat ;)
 
Anything that had color was pulled today in preparation for the vacation. All the container plants have been moved to the garden under the sunshade, as that space has a timer setup. I sure do hope it works like it is supposed to or we're toast here. Wish me luck!

The timer went off as scheduled at 5:30PM, yay! I have it set for 2 hours each night. Probably too much, but we're all in with every plant we own. Pineapples, avocado, herbs, young fig and lemon trees, and more. They just have to make it ;)
 
Things are coming around. I can't wait to see what comes in a couple months.
Glad to hear the system is up and running.
