DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

Looking good doc?!? Man they are big now. Good pointers on the vendors and freebies. For my two cents alone I feel insulted when I got those freebies from PJ. Really. ?! Serranos and jals. Especially when people order the so called reapers maybe something special... Ya know if it were a special type then. Cool. But I think I'd rather not get them then to have them.

Thanks again on your part for the JPGS

It's the biggest in the middle

Nice job on the JPGS! I see loads of buds and a couple of flowers. Very nice.

I have to admit, I felt similarly when I first saw the packets of Jalapeno and Serrano seeds in the envelope. Anyway, then I thought, "Ah, what the hell. They are freebies, after all. Into the Rapid Rooters you go." :)

Holy crap, Brent, pods already?!?!

The 5 colour looks really good, and the brains look great! I'm not sure why you call them dinky, maybe the pic is a closeup and they are actually tiny?

Haha! Thanks Stefan. Starting mid-October, I was hoping for pods start forming by the end of January. As you see, the annuums are definitely podding up. I haven't taken pics of the chinenses in a while, but they are budding up.

The brain pic is a close up. That almost ripe pod is about 2 cm in diameter...dinky. But it should be ripe today. When I get home from work I'm going to try some of it and see if it has any heat.

Cool, write down your thoughts and review your own pod here :) Seriously let us hear read how it taste ...

ooooooooooooooooooooooh ouch! That's going to kill them taste buds for sure! Nice :)

It was an interesting little pepper. There was a lot of placenta and not a single seed. Weird. That must be why it was so small. Anyway, it had some heat, but not a lot. I ate about a quarter of it from the plancenta end. Probably about Serrano heat. I'm hoping when it gets up-potted and the warmer weather rolls around, the pods will look more true and carry more heat. Since the seeds were probably OP, it's also possible that it is a cross with something milder. The flavor was just OK. Perhaps I could have let it ripen longer, but I was dying to try it!
Good job Doc! I won't be seeing pods on my Koreans before June lol! Those Anaheims look big enough for rellenos too. Enjoy!
Thanks, Rick. Always a pleasure to have you drop in. I'm dying for that Anaheim to finish turning red!

Thank you for describing … I would have done the same ting in your shoes, hard to go long without having a fresh pod. Especially what you produce with your time and hard work, that alone must have made it more enjoyable :)

Yeah, it didn't go to waste. I munched it in pieces with dinner last night. I'm going to try to save this plant through spring, but I do have a TSMB growing out of seed from Duffy and a Brain Strain growing out of seed from Cappy, so this season should bring what I hope is the real deal on both fronts. :)

Well, the White Devil's Tongue seeds have failed to pop and look like they are disintegrating in the Rooters. I've tried seed from two different sources. One was saved seed from pods I bought last year and the other was from a reputable vendor. I can't seem to find any other vendors selling them. If anyone knows of any vendors who sell these or if anyone has any they care to sell, trade, or ???, please let me know. I'd like to give this variety one more chance.

Thanks in advance. :)

Sorry to hear about your devil's tongue seeds not popping. I don't know anything about this type of pepper so I can't give any advice or recommendations.

No worries, man. It's not like I don't have enough to keep me busy. ;) If not this year, then I'll think about trying it again next year.

Looking great Doc. We started ours about the same time in early Oct-ish and although my Bhuts, Butch Ts and Fataliis are as big as yours and tons of flowers they have no fruit yet. I think it is getting too cold at night in the basement once the lights cycle off, or maybe it is the difference of you being out in a green house and I am under a light.

One of these days I'll update my glog to show the progress. I don't think I've updated it in a month or more.

Thanks. I get a few varieties from him. White Devil's Tongue was one of them. The others I got from him popped fine. Those didn't. That's why I'm looking for a different source. Not saying anything bad about him , at all. Jusst thinking his DT White seed might not be quite viable. I've heard of similar issues with some other white varieties, possibly too many recessive genes.

Thanks Jeff. I'd like to see some updates from you! No flowers yet from the chinenses, but many buds starting. The annuums are going nuts, though.
