Eephus Man's 2012 March to Hell and Back (Grow Log)

Okay, I'm going to *actually* try and update things this year. My first flats will start tomorrow (chinenses and a few other long-seasons), and the rest, minus a few herbs/tomatoes, will go in later this week or early next. I'm going to try and be better about keeping records this year, too. We'll see how it goes with my limited time, but I'm hopeful.

So...without further blab, here's a tease of a few batches of seeds soaking in a seaweed/superthrive solution over night.

I'm trying out small batches of varietals that are new to me, and larger for those that are known favs for me. Most of these will end up in pots or small raised beds. My title is in reference to the well-known summer conditions in Texas this year, where we were spared little in the way of either rainfall (none between late April and early October) or temperatures (over 100F for 90 days, including two, back-to-back 25+ day runs over 100F). This is also a test to see which varieties produce before the heat set, during the summer, and which begin to produce again the most quickly in the fall.

We'll see how it goes and I'm happy to have you on board for advice, tips, questions and observations!

Special thanks this year to Buck77, Kappy, menotume, hot stuff, and Spicegeist for help with wanted seeds and unrequested generosity!

I like looking at your glog, because I get a preview of what some of my peppers should look like in a few more weeks. I'm growing the Barro do Robiero, Aji Angelo, Biker Billy, Jimmy Nardello, and Fish. Yours look amazing, and gives me something to look forward to. Thanks for sharing!

A small harvest this morning...

A few Sweet Pickles, one Dulce di Minervino (which are awesomely juicy, BTW), one Mini Red Bell, two Jimmy Nardello's, two Hinkelhatz, and one Chocolate Hab.

Jimmy Nard's starting to ripen up. Mmmmm.

Totally agree with you on the yummmm

Dulce di Minervinos getting close...

How do these compare to Nards??

Depends on what you're doing with them. Raw, they are superior, IMO. They are very close to as sweet (but just a touch less so), MUCH more juicy, and thicker walled. If you're roasting them, though, JN's whip them. The Nard skin just peels away effortlessly and they turn into candy. The DDMs chunk out and the skin is a little tougher.

That being said, if you're looking for a salad pepper, they (the DDMs) are very, very good. And I'm sure they may have other uses as well. Those are the only two things I've done with both of them to compare.

Thanks for posting. It reminds me that I need to do an update. Based on upcoming weather, it might be my last "pretty" look at the pepper garden till September. I was hoping my thread title wasn't apt this year, but its about to hit here with the TRUE heat, I'm afraid.

Think I've got an SVB in the back garden...

For an annuum, the Hinkelhatz have some punch.

Also...

Should I eat it?

Great pics, E-man! Everything is so beautiful and dense.
A real pepper jungle, complete with monster pods.
You have a spectacular grow goin' there!

Thanks, guys. Much appreciated. Its so great when you get a good weather year. I am very thankful for it. Now comes the interesting part...trying to keep them alive till September!

Mike, do you cull any annuums during the summer, or do you keep everything that can make it.

Eric, I have a few that I either trash or replace (several not potted up that I can't bare to throw away) and not just annuum's. It is unlikely that they will be big contributors to production but, I think of it as a young mature plant for 2013 if its something I am interested in. Adding them into ("you will be assimilated") the drip irrigation is not much effort. The greater effort would be making space for, and watching out for aphids during the winter. The late additions are mostly shaded too, so they don't get the brunt of summer that is coming.

Mike

Looking good Eric. How was that yellow super. It looked nasty!

Are you gonna build any type of shade clothe. Or just let the strong thrive :drooling:

Thanks, Mike. Do you start new starts for fall, too? Or do you just nurse the late spring starts in xplant those when you cull? I think we're about at the point where if I want fall starts, I'd better hop on it. I'm pondering it with a few quick varieties. Not sure if my wife will revolt if I have more starts inside again. She's very cool about once per year. Don't wanna sour her on it. :D

Jamie, I totally chickened out. It was late and I feared retribution from the pepper. I wanted to sleep. Of course, my 18-month-old had other plans, so I'm just as tired, and that pepper is now calling to me again. Maybe I'll eat it with lunch. If a customer comes in during that time, they'll probably think I lost a family member today. lol. Ah...sorry for my sense of humor, guys. Dunno why I'm that way. :D

I'm not doing shade cloth, but I have a cedar and a youpon that shade about half the deck in the afternoon. It isn't great, but I try and shove them all back close to that shade outline as we get hotter. They don't all fit, but I keep my favs (or those that haven't produced yet) further in the shade.

Hey, bro, how was that yellow gnarl?

Paul, I chickened out last night and then I forgot to pack it with my lunch today! Actually, I forgot to pack ANY lunch today. I don't mind a bite out at lunch during work every now and then, but I have some seriously bad junk food around me here. That's fun about once a month with my age and palate. lol.

Gonna try and munch it tonight. Maybe I'll do a video review one of these days. Never thought I'd voluntarily cry on camera in front of a bunch of (mainly) men.

I hear ya about the junk food, bro! Might be a bad combo with a
super hot! From what I've read on here, grease and heat don't
seem to mix well : )

Hope you enjoy your pepper tonight, E-man!

WOW, amazing glog!
I caught up on the last 5 or so pages, lookin great man!
I reallllllly need to stop looking at glogs from Texas and Florida.. You guys are killin me with your weather and fresh pods!! lol.
You have one of the best assortments of chiles growing on the site if I do say so myself. Nice heat range and varieties.
That yellow super looks mean! Good luck chompin on the that.
Btw, a video review sounds like a pretty good idea.

Good to read up on your glog Eric. Hope all is well with you.
