First year growing peppers..

Hey guys, so i thought i would start a glog on my plants..
This is my first year growing peppers... I bought all these plants..I did not start them from seed.(dont hate me im new, lol) I had planned on doing so but have learnt iv got into pepper growing at the wrong time of year and have missed the window to grow from seed for this year.
Im afraid this wont be as exciting as many other glogs, but hey, gotta start somewhere and people like pictures :)

This is my sweet long yellow pepper..not sure of the actual type, tag just says long sweet yellow.

this is my (actually my girl friends plant)..its called "capsicum chili fire", someone said it might actually be a "wildfire" chilii..time will tell I guess. It seems to be taking AGES to flower.

and here is my setup.

thanks for looking :)

Parasitic benes are awesome, aye. Them, along with some of the other good guys here, do a splendid job keeping the aphid in check.

Bug pests do tend to be more attracted to C. annuum over C. chinense for some reason. But then C. annuum does seem to have that certain degree of resilience too (and will keep trying to produce heaps despite the bugs having their way). C. chinense can sometimes be a baby when it comes to bug attack so it's probably for the best.

Looking good, BTW, mate! Despite the damaged plant, them Cayenne's looking like they gonna be real tasty when they ripen.

Good to see the high germination.
Mine have been in 5 days now and nothing,I know its still early but arrrgggggg I hate the wait.

haha, you should have hooks very soon im sure!
I put 2 seeds of barrackpore, primo, brainstrain, hp22b, and 7pot SR strain to soak last night so ill have those in pellets tonight. Dont want to end up with too many plants!

on other good news, i did a bit of digging in the pellets that showed no signs of life, and one of the 7pot whites has germed, I hope i didnt hurt it when I was trying to take a look..

and lastly the hp22b that took an early hit from damping off seems to be doing better, it almost has its cotys out now..hopefully it wont be stunted to much

Awesome, cant wait to see how things turn out...

Neither can I ! :) im feeling quite positive about the upcoming season!
I put another batch of seeds down last night after a day of soaking in water.
Just a single seed in each pellet. Im not sure which one im most looking forward to germing out of this lot..is it the SR?, or maybe the Primo? hmm but the barrakpore looks cool..!
cant wait :)
cheers

Put another 4 types of seeds to soak last night, Black Naga, Nagalah, Jays Peach, and Jays Red.
Thanks very much to user Rush35 for the seeds! It is much appreciated.

So my current grow list is now as follows;

7pot brainstrain
7pot barrakpore
7pot SR strain
7pot jonah
7pot primo
7pot white
7pot yellow
Trinidad Douglah
HP22B selected
Brown Bhutlah SLP
Butch T
Black Naga
Nagalah
Jays Peach
Jays Red

I should be seeing some hooks from the second batch of seeds over the next few days.
cheers

Great list and grow.

Man, that one Jonah is insane. I'm really curious about it. Are there any differences between the two? Light, soils, ferts, amount of water given etc?

Nope, I’ll try give a run through of their life story :) they were started in the exact same jiffy pellet.  At the time I planted 12 seeds, and only 2 germinated, both in the same jiffy pellet.

I took the seeds from my own Jonah pods; I did not differentiate between pods at all.

The small one was a helmet head but did just fine. Both were potted up at the same time, using the same potting mix - as they were in the same pellet. The big one did go into a slightly bigger pot (the top inch or so of the pot was slightly wider than the pot with the smaller plant in it)

Both plants just sit on my windowsill and get windowsill light only. Both get the same amount of light.

When it comes down to it could be crossed with anything, I bought the original Jonah from a nursery with quite a few pods already set on it, and it was bunched with a whole lot of different superhots.

One thing of note is that all the nodes on one side of forks have 2 buds, and on the other side they all have 3 buds. I’m not sure if that’s weird or not? Its forking multiple times now. Tried to take pics but it was too dark, will get some new ones soon.

Will be interesting to see what pods it makes! :)

edit; oh and i potted up the big one when it outgrew its smaller pot..the other jonah is still in the same pot, is very healthy.. will pot that up soon..

I was thinking it might be a cross too because they are said to be quite vigorous the first year. If it's not, i think that's just as interesting and it has some excellent genetics.

Thanks for the reply, I'll be keeping an eye on your glog and look forward to see both eventually pod up.

Good luck with your grow!

Small update, i think its day 6 since i put down the last batch of seeds.
We have a couple of winners for the first to hook, and they are the two primo seeds! interesting.

The douglahs & brown bhutlah's are doing well. They are starting their first sets of true leaves.
The HP22B seems to be doing just fine and appears to be catching up with the others. The 7pot white as of today has its cotys out and about straight (finally)
Something else interesting, the seeds that I put to soak just the other day -  I  left them on my heat mat in the glasses of water for 24 hours, and when I came back one of the black naga seeds had a tail, germd in less then 24 hours!?

All in all things are very positive, will get some new pics soon..
cheers

A sign of luck for the season?

It happens sometimes, usually with very fresh seeds.

small update due to being too dark to get decent pics..

little Jonah and butch T are doing well, can clearly see the differences in the leaves between the two plants..(jonah on right, butch t on left). will try to pot them up this weekend.

here is big boy jonah, its forking lots..I asked above with no answer so ill ask again - is it weird that all the nodes on one side of the forks have two buds, and on the other side of the forks they have 3 buds per node?
i.e. the whole left side of the plant has 2 buds per node and the right side has 3 buds per node

20140618_170201_zps290baad2.jpg

also noticed today the plant has a flower! it looks kind of odd though

Interesting observation but nothing to worry about... I don't think. :scared: You could always pluck the third ones off to even things up....... :D

Not worried, am kind of hoping I have something a little special :)

Update time; here are the 3 x brown bhutlah's and an HP22B on the left there. The one you cant see is a late germing HP22B that I planted at the same time as the plants in this picture..that takes germination up to 90%, or 9 out of 10  :)
20140622_125235_zps062c4023.jpg

Here are the 3 x T. Douglah's, they are doing fine so far. Observation - they appear to have the largest coty's out of all my species so far :)

Next we have a bunch of random sprouts from my second batch of seeds, amoungst them would be 7 pot SR, 7pot primo, 7pot barrakpore, a couple more HP22B's, a yellow scorpion and probably some others..
The brainstrain is the only one out of the second batch to not have at least 1 sprout yet.

Here is the Butch T (on the left) and the small Jonah on the right. Small jonah is starting to fork and make some mini buds. Its a very stumpy plant, and has a very thick stem with minimal space between the nodes. I potted it up over the weekend. It will be interesting to see if this plant does anything weird with the number of buds per node. Looks like just 2 are forming at the first fork.

here is a better pic of the open flower on big boy jonah, looks like it will have pollen in the next day or so.
20140622_125213_zps9c224ea7.jpg

and lastly here is something a little different... this is a picture of the underside of one of the leaves on my cayenne plant that is outdoors. What you can see is aphids, that have been infected by parasitic wasps. The wasp lays an egg in the aphid. The aphid then dies, develops a brown outer cocoon, then a wasp emerges from the aphid. The plant is covered in these cocoons. You can kind of see that they are in different stages, one looks like a wasp is emerging as you can see its wings starting to come out of the cocoon. cool.

Everything looking so healthy. :)
The butch T may be in need of some calcium by the looks of those leaves though.
Yea i have wondered about the crinkly leaves quite a bit actually, I had decided that's just how that plant was, ill give it a pinch of tomato food though :)

Hey guys, so last night I decided to throw together a little LED lighting panel out of some stuff I had laying around..each little square has 4 LEDs on it..for a total of 60 LEDs
I intend to just use it for a few hours each night to supplement the natural light they get during the day..

There are a few little things id like to do to improve it.. I will move the LEDS closer to the center, I get wastage light out the sides at the moment. Line my plastic container with tin foil or similar, and swap out one pod of LED's (two of the LEDs are dead)

Looking good but please don't use tin foil, its the worst thing you can use for reflection.Flat white paint, Mylar or panda film are the best reflectors.
You can get mylar and panda film from the switched on gardener in NZ. :)
