Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

A lot of people are having trouble sprouting the Manzanos. You had great germination. What u do??

Wasn't anything I did. The seeds came from Smokemaster, so he gets the credit. The Orange Manzano seeds were from him too, but were a couple years older than the red, and yellow ones, so maybe that's why the orange didn't have as good a germination as the other two.

I would imagine it involves some kind of dark magic or a sacrifice to the pepper gods. Perhaps a virgin was thrown into pepper joes volcano in a box.

Hahaha! It took over 3 weeks for them sprout, so I think they just require patience. Something I'm usually pretty low on.

Here is today's pictorial update:

Very excited about this one, El Oro de Equador. This is my third try with this one. Hope I can keep them alive this time!

Jeff, this picture is for you, a Red Manzano with a helmethead. Notice it's the only helmethead I've had so far, and it's in a Rapid Rooter with the larger hole.

Guess that's all for today.

Looking good Bonnie! Always a lot poppin' at your place... This weekend will be 3 weeks since I planted my chile seeds. I hope the Manzanos hook by then, but I'm hedging my bets and I've soaked the rest of the seeds I have for it and I'll start them in coffee filters today.

One of the things I like about germing seeds this way is that I don't have to resist the urge to dig the seeds up to see if they've sprouted. Lol!
That way I know they've broken dormancy when I plant them and I make sure to cover them with enough soil so the seedlings have a good chance to scrub off the seed coat, and hopefully, no helmet head. I soaked my seeds in a weak saltpeter/water solution too since I've heard it helps soften the seed coat even more. Maybe next year I'll have to soak some seeds with and some without to test the validity of that.

Look it up "Lemon Drop" on UrbanDictionary.com, it's pretty disgusting from what I hear.
I would not give the urban dic much credence on half the crap written there … most stuff is just BS there!
I'll bet it is not THP but photobucket which deleted it for this very reason...sad world. I would upload it again and rename it on photobucket and then caption it correctly here.
Agreed, photobucket not only does that, they dumb down pictures after time, so if you what high quality shots to last don’t use dem … That said, I do use them for some things that are not that important.

@ Bonnie
Thumbs up on the close up pics of the hooks and sprouts! Keep up dat great grow :)

I never name my pics for that reason. Looking good Bonnie. Might need a bigger community spot at the rate you are going.

I fought the same thing with my lemon drop pictures last year. It isn't a photobucket thing. I host my pictures on my own server and the pictures just don't show here. I always had to rename them. My 2012 glog is full of lemon drop frustrations.

Deleted the photo on Photobucket, changed the name of the file, both on my computer, and on Photobucket, and reloaded it onto THP. Success!!!

Well, I don't know if that definition is correct or not, but I wish I wouldn't have let my curiosity get the better of me! I could have done without a mental picture of THAT!!!

As you can see, there are a few holdouts, Bonda ma Jacques, Cheiro Roxa, Habanero Peach, Inca Red Drop, Jamaican Hot Choc., Pimenta de Neyde, and True Jam. Scotch Bonnet. The Beni Highlands and Purple Bhut were just sown last week, so I am not worried about them yet, but I am beginning to wonder if I should resow some of those others. Thoughts?

Might try to resow some of the earlier ones. Have you tried the paper towel in a ziplock with a little heat to see if you can baby them into getting going faster?

Purple bhut sounds like it will be gorgeous. Can't wait to see em. Everyting I have read/seen on the purple bhut shows that it really isn't a bhut.

Some of those are at three weeks, so you might have to try em again. I had a similar problem last year and replanted, then the first three popped and the new three popped lol.

Yeah, that happened to me last year with the Peach Habaneros, so I know those are a little stubborn. Not sure about some of those other no shows though.

Hold outs or not...your rates look good! I threw in a few more when mine hit the 3 week mark. I am still getting the odd original to pop though??? Tricky little buggers.

Germ rates look pretty good. I had to re-sow a few varieties to get a decent (or a single) seedling out of the lot. So far there is one variety I have given up on. Keep it up!

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

I resowed the following this morning:

Bonda ma Jacques
Cheiro Roxa
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Peach Habanero (2 commercial seed, and 2 of my harvested seed from '12)
TFM Scotch Bonnet

It looks like the other White Habanero is starting to hook, but that's about all the action for now.

Now here's the dilemma. When you have most of your stuff sprouted, but a few holdouts, what do you do about removing the dome, and how far away do you keep the lights? I don't want the sprouts to get leggy, but I don't want to burn up/dry out the newly planted seeds either. How do you guys handle that?

If space is an issue... You could just loosely wrap the cells you're trying to germinate in cling wrap to trap moisture and cut if off when you get sprouts.
