Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

When I mentioned that I got no germination on the Jamaican Hot Chocolates, I got three generous offers for fresher seed. So of course, look what I found today, on day 28!!!

I guess it's like washing your car, guarantees it will rain ...

Anyway, before y'all start feeling too sorry for me out here in the cold, snowy mountains, living here does have it's perks.

X Games '13

Behind my daughter is the super pipe, and the big air jump.

BTW, somebody please talk me out of starting my annuums this weekend!!! Now that not much is sprouting, I am so ready to start that other tray of seeds, but our last frost date is something like 14 weeks away. I feel like a serious addict in need of a fix. Somebody HELP!!!

If it's any consolation Bonnie... I'm not planning on starting my Annuums for another 2-3 weeks myself... with the exception of the Kurtovska Kapija, which is about a 100 day Annuum.

The people on this board are amazing in both their friendliness and their generosity. Awesome you have the JHC on the way!

Love the Winter X Games! So sorry to hear about Caleb Moore. I saw his crash on TV and although pretty bad, he walked away from it. Not quite sure what happened in the days that followed. Levi Lavalle's final run was incredible!

If you want to hold off on starting your annuums, 14 weeks will equal annuums about three feet tall. ;) Whatever you decide, enjoy and good luck!

[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Looking back at last year's records, I sowed the annuums on February 14th, and there was only a couple of plants that outgrew the space before plant out time, so I don't think it would be too unmanageable. Notice how I am trying to talk myself into going ahead and sowing them?[/background]

Received a very generous envelope of seeds from GA Growhead yesterday, which contained some fresh Jamaican Hot Chocolate seeds.

Plus a whole bunch of other really cool stuff!

Thank you, Jason!!!

I just love how everyone at THP is so generous and helpful.

You da poo GA Growhead!!! :woohoo: Glad one finally popped for you. Can't help you on the not starting seeds thing...I share your compulsion. If I were you I would start every seed you have right now...and I mean EVERY SINGLE SEED!!! I just built my nice big new grow room and I am already trying to figure out how to add another set of shelves for more stations!!!!

Hahaha!!! Shane, you'd be proud of me. I made it through the whole weekend, and the only thing I sowed was another Birgit's Locoto for the Biggest Plant Growdown!

I was so busy sorting seeds for the Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap I'm hosting right now that I didn't have time, or I'm sure they'd be in the dirt by now. Plus, my middle son went to snow camp this weekend. A whole weekend of snow tubing and snowball fights. What's not to love about that! They should have one for grown ups!!!

UPDATE:

First true leaves on the Yellow Manzanos

Strangest helmet head I've ever seen. Reminds me of a hermet crab coming out of his shell. Pimenta de Neyde.

Looks like I resowed too soon. Bonda ma Jacques resowed on 1-27-13. Original seed sown on 1-7-13 sprouted today. Oh, and if you look close, you can see I missed the hole when I sowed the seed.

BondamaJacqueshook2-3-13_zpsa17a7f65.jpg

Oh, and look who else showed up! The other Jamaican Hot Chocolate.

JamaicanHotChochook2-3-13_zps44017702.jpg

For those of you that sent me fresh Jamaican Hot Chocolate seeds. Don't worry, I will use the extras for the swap, so they will go to good homes.

I wonder how many sprouts I'll have once the resowed ones start coming up???

Great problem to have Bonnie! Resowing means either you get more plants...or some of your friends up at the community garden can try a plant or two!

Outstanding update Bonnie! Good on ya for having the hot chocolates pop and finding good homes for the extra seeds. Can't wait to see how you distribute the seeds in the swap. Cheers

That's good news. Still waiting on my bondas to show. So hoping i only have another week, as im one week behind you. Good to see the other JHC pop too. Take care.

Still getting a few seeds sprouting. Since my last post, Cheiro Roxa, and Beni Highlands have sprouted (100% germ.).

I tried to take the helmet off of the Pimenta de Neyde, and ripped one of the cotyledons off, but it looks like it will survive.

The very first sprout to come up this season was one of my Condor's Beaks. But the other one that sprouted later, is already showing true leaves. The first one just sat there, didn't grow at all, and finally withered away yesterday. When I pulled up the Root Riot, there was no visible root, so not sure what was going on. Could have been dampening off, but it almost seemed like a failure to thrive. Anyone else experienced this before? The couple of times that I have lost sprouts to dampening off, a spot along the stem would die off and eventually the top of the sprout would topple over. This seemed different.

Ohhh....gotta see what the next throwdown is and push Bonnie into it! Growers UNITE and seize control of the dark side of this forum!!! I'll be your marketing advisor...

Fingers crossed on your few holdouts! Good luck!
Shane

My culinary skills have not been utilized to their full potential lately. I'm too embarrassed to even admit the kinds of things I've been serving for dinner lately.

I promised Rocketman and Rick, that I would look into doing a TD after I finished with this massive seed swap I'm hosting. I've got around 35 participants, and another 25 newbies in the swap. I've received over 750 packets of seeds so far not counting donations, and there's still a few envelopes out yet! I've been trying to keep track of it all on an Excel spread sheet, but when I go to print the final version in order to fill the envelopes, it's going to be a book!!! Good thing I just bought new toner cartridges!

You really need to get in one! Sounds like a huge swap!!! Have fun with that! I did a couple trains last season and ended up running them for a time...not the most fun I've had. Met some cool folks on them...and some less than cool ones too. When you wrapping that one up?

Hopefully in the next 10 days.

I know what you mean about running swaps! There have been some super generous people, that sent in lots of extras for the newbies. Plus, there have been a couple of people that even sent in hostess gifts, which I enjoyed receiving. On the other hand, there have been those that wanted something for nothing, or just aren't good at following directions. Quite a few requests for things that are so new, that no one has sent any in, such as Carolina Reaper, Sepia Serpent, 7 Pot Bubblegum, White Bhut, etc. All I can do is fill as many wishlist items as possible with what has been sent in. Hopefully, in the end, everyone will be happy with what they receive back.

Hi Bonnie, your numbers are looking good. I saw that i now have two JHCs up and made me think about you, so had to stop by to how things are going. Hope you survive the seed swap! 750 seeds packs is a lot to keep track of. That's quite insane. Too cool to host such a huge swap! Hope everyone is thankful for all your hardwork! :)
