Two days in and I have my first tomato starting to peek.  I am really hoping my ground cherries from Amazon germs.  I gotta give them a try this year.

They are a bit seedy, but very tasty. You'll like them. I considered growing them this year, but they didn't make the cut.

Do to some older seed not germinating well, mostly older sweets, I have resorted to putting some seed in zip lock bags behind the wood stove to see if I can get something to pop.  I will still have a ton of plants here either way.  Next year I will have to purchase more hybrid seeds since my stash is now gone.

Still hoping the giant thai makes an appearance, but if it don't, I think I can get some plants locally.  Really don't like bringing plants in from other places as I am relatively pest free here.

Still have some onions coming up from the 4 varieties I planted earlier.  Got two more packs of seeds coming, plus I have walking and some sets to plant.  I should be good on onions.  Looking forward to cooking with Chipolini onions.

Everything else that I am planning on starting indoors will probably go into the cells next week instead of waiting on April 1.  Most of this stuff I generally direct sow, but thought I might jump start their season by starting early.  If it doesn't work out, I can still direct sow when the time comes.  I got plenty of space in the grow room any how lol.

Haven't been on much as I had some things going on, but I should get back to normal soon.

Hope everyone's weekend was good.
I agree, about purchasing plants. Disease is what got me growing from seed. A few years ago I lost almost half my mater grow to Southern Blight. AND I think mites came from from a plant I bought last year. I still had to buy a few, I had some bad seeds. But I isolated them and treated them as well for mites.

Everything is runnin well HJeff!

Condolences on the loss of your pal. Sorry about that.

Tomato list looks good. I started nine way to early and now they've outgrown the shelf and are dropping lower branches. Hoping to plant em deep so their long stems root up. Hopefully they'll bounce back.

Wow...2 days and a tomato seedling.............I forgot how fast they emerge, not like some pepper seeds that take 4 weeks and then some...
Jeff that's one thing I miss is a fresh homegrown meaty tomato............I'd settle for an Orange Sunburst Cherry right now...

I have 4 sun sugars in the dirt right now.  Last year they didn't produce well, so this year I doubled my plantings of them.

Got two of my Aunt Molly ground cherries up this morning.  The evergreen tomatillo is reaching for the ceiling already too.  Crazy thing.

Picked up a pack of radicchio seeds today.  Never heard of it before and it looked good on the packet.  Anyone have any experience growing and or cooking with this?

Upper 50s here today, so much of my time was spent outside.  Loved it!!!  Got the boat all ready for the lake, now I just need to 12 inches or so of ice to come off the lakes.  Might be a while.  Hoping it comes as rain tonight not as snow.

Checking on my last tray of peppers and I have an aji crystal popping.  This means I will probably have 20 seeds germ in the paper toweling.  No way do I save them all.  Can't keep doing that.

I think next weekend will be the last of my indoor sowing.

Two months until plant out!!!

Jeff,

I take it you fish on Lake Michigan? My brother lives 300 yds from Lake Erie, and has a really nice 30' sailboat. It's frozen too. He's more into sailing than fishing, 2 years ago I was up there in July and the daytime temps were just 70° (may have been 3 years) the water temps were around 55° and the teenagers were hanging on knotted ropes off the back of the boat. I thought they were crazy! But then again in the '70's I was in the Atlantic during March one day when it hit 80°. Not anymore after 36 years here in the deep South!

2 months till dirt day? Your plants will be setting pods by then

Here's to hoping that 2 months is less!

Jeff......I've grown radicchio before. I get most of my leaf lettuce, mesclun and certain herb seed from John Scheepers Seeds. Radicchio and Romaine grow great indoors in the cooler envirement under the flours. It will tend to open up in the Summer heat and bolt pretty quick.

Lately I've bought small tight heads along with Endive from the produce sections in the grocers. I generally chop or ribbon the rad up and mix into the salad greens......but both Rad and Endive can be sliced in half , marinated in a vinegarette and briefly grilled outdoors. Placed on a salad or next to the steak can bring out that bitterly tangy flav.......

I remember my second trip fishing in Canada.  I brought my tube and we went tubing after fishing in June.  Water still made our teeth chatter.  Some mornings had a skim of ice on the water.  Luckily, we had liquid courage to help us along.

Don't fish Lake Michigan all that much.  I don't have boat enough to get way off shore to fish for salmon.  I do have a buddy that brings me along, which is nice.  I have had my boat out on it fishing for jumbo perch.  That is fun, but our state has a 15 fish limit on perch, and its over an hour drive plus launch fees just doesn't make it worth it.  I mainly fish inland lakes for walleye.

You're not gonna cull a sprout are you HJeff?

If half the seed I have germing sprout, I'd have to save another 100 plants.  Can't do it.  I might keep over 3 and 3 of the bombs, but that is just to stuff em and freeze them for winter snacks.

I have read grilling it brings out the flavor better.  I just seen the packet and had to give it a try.  Doing so much more veges this year.  My stomach is going to revolt on me once the garden starts producing.

Had to do some watering of the gallon pots today and found a surprise.

My red bunching onions are starting to pop.  I planted them all in a 1 gallon pot, so they should have a thicken mat of onions once they all get up.  Learning curve on these onions.

Nice indoor poddage Jeff...........If I saw that in my growroom I'd be munching on that like Bugs Bunny with a Carrot......

Theres plenty of light in your growroom for both the plants and some cool photography.

Your overwinters are kicking in nicely........grilled chicken with "bloody ranch"...........like that !
