Bought these drip pans from dollar store.  They make excellent domes for my 1 gallon pots, which I used for my red bunching onions.  I think they will come in handy for other plantings as well, but perfect for onions.

Four types of lettuce planted early.  See how it works.

Mainly brassica type plants.

0325bras.jpg

The lettuce and these other trays can all fit on one shelf, so if I have to have it, I still have a free shelf.

Going to pot up the ground cherry and the tomatillo to see if I can get a better grip on them.  I also planted 18 more ground cherries (6 of each variety) to hedge my bets.  Really wanting to give these a go.

There are some things I am missing like regular broccoli and purple kohlrabi, but the rabi can be direct so and the broccoli can be planted in a small 4 pack if I get seeds soon.

Woke up this morning to a dusting of snow on the ground and it is snowing now even though it is 35 degrees out.  Well below the 50 degree average we should be having.

Good growing all.

I find peppers amazing.  My brown moruga plants were short and really wide sitting in their 3 1/2 inch pots.  I potted them up into gallons and now they are pushing two feet tall and don't look so wide any more.

My first pete that was outgrowing everything has slowed way down.  No longer the tallest, not even in the top 20.  Debating about picking off its three green pods and munching them.  Would help the plant out too.  Some peppers when eaten green aren't so good though.

Simply outstanding update Jeff!

You covered the whole spectrum of growth and they all look fantastic.

I agree, once they hit the larger pots the grow upwards and fast!

I had trouble germing Lettuce in the dirt this season, I think it got too cold too fast. I would up starting a few inside and transplanting them, lost a couple because it went down to 20° a week later but a few made it. Basically my winter grow stunk cuz of the weather.

Keep doing what you're doing, it sure is working!

Well, I have officially went crazy.  I have cousins that stop over during the summer (free garden hand outs) and no matter how well my garden does, they have Jack and the Beanstalk tales of how big their stuff is.  So this year, with all the new colorful stuff I am growing, I am planning on making the front garden a showcase.

I have a good ebay seller that is pretty legit on their seeds.  I got my red russo bunching onions from them and they came up great.  So I go to leave feedback and I see all the neat stuff they have.

I bought 10 more packs of seeds and it only cost me 14.50 and that includes the 1.98 shipping.

Already growing purple and golden beets up front, now I added white beets.

Added purple kohlrabi

Burgundy okra

Granny smith apple type cucumbers to go with the national pickling, boston pickling, and lemon pickles.

Red sunflowers...IKR

Brussels sprouts.

Purple tomatillo

Wonderberry.  Suppose to be like a blueberry type ground cherry.  For a buck, I can throw 4 plants in the garden and see.

Purple broccoli.  I know it is suppose to be fall planted and OW for the next year, but I don't know if it will do it this far north.  Not enough information.  Already have purple cauliflower, baby broccoli, and regular broccoli planned.

Added a red romaine lettuce to my growing lettuce list.  Begs the question...can you have too much lettuce?  It takes up no space and can be sowed multiple times a year.

Most of this stuff can be direct sowed, but my last order I got in like three days and I still have about a week until my April 1st deadline to sow indoors.  Still on target.

I believe for next season, the back garden will be enlarged.  I can double it without too much excavating!!!

Happy growing all.

This is just craziness. How much garden space will you be using for this mega grow?

The pictures in July should be out of this world.

Jeff you've got a great variety of veg for the summer pickin's ........any Swiss Chard ?

Talk about roots....plants appear to be very healthy, do you tease the roots apart before potting up ?

Nice idea with the saucers using them as a space dome for the seedlings. I use to order those in bulk for my 1.5 gal containers. Perfect use since the pots can be placed right next to each other.

Pods forming indoors is pretty cool....most of your plants will have buds on them prior to plant out. I'm thinking on framing up my hoops this weekend. It's climing into the 60's...still do damp to screen my container soil, but Spring is close.

Right now I have the same garden space that I had last year with the addition of the 24 feet of row next to my hobby shop that I plan on putting all MoA plants and a row of onions in front.  Probably won't put the red bunching as they have to go in the front garden.  I am also going to do some raised beds for potatoes and hopefully some of the pepper groupings.

I can't imagine how awesome my salads are going to look with 5 kinds of lettuce, 5 or 6 kinds of chard, spinach, kale, some lemon and apple cukes, red green onions, sliced cherry tomatoes, sweet pepper, and hot peppers.  Then cover the top with a spiced and sliced grilled chicken breast.  Just made myself hungry, BRB.

Thinks are really picking up HJeff! The peach bhut is my favorite OW... Bet you're gonna pull a ton of pods from that guy. Love your workspace and organization! Keep on growin!

Thank you.  This peach is the one that was quite hot and tasty last season.  I also saved seeds from this one and hopefully the traits filter down the line.  I know Annie liked it a lot and I will have to surprise her with a SFRB as soon as I get ripe pods.

I will be revamping it for next season to make it even better organized and I think I can get two more shelves with lights out of the mix.  Right now my HBJ are on a double shelf with the lights as high as they can go and a few are right there.  No more January 1 starts for me.

I tease the roots in two ways.  Once I get them out of the pot I tickle them with a feather.  Then I hold them just over a glass of water as I drink it.  Really makes them made.

Actually, yes I do tease them.  Get them to spread out into the rest of the pot faster and not still be pot bound.  I will tease them again when I plant them out.

Got about two months before plant out...I might have ripe pods by then :)

Mega-update, Jeff!
Nice having some early pods to keep a body FIRED-UP!
Looks like you are shifting into high gear, my friend.

Been in high gear since I planted too soon.  Itching to get the plants in the dirt.  Most of the gallon pots get water twice a week.  The ones that seem to wilt the fastest go on the top of the grow table for easier access.  Of course they catch more wind there, so that has downfalls to it too.  HBJ might have to go there since they are getting so tall.

Going up to gallons also mean I can't bottom water, so that really increases the labor in the watering process.  But it sure is nice seeing these babies get big.  I hate having plants that look nice indoors and then as soon as you plant them in the garden they look small again.  They will need caged as soon as they get planted this year.

Took a trip out to the lake today and there is open water in the middle, but the edges are still frozen.  They are bad enough you can't walk out on the ice from shore, so it shouldn't take long for the open water to eat it up.  Plus rain tonight and 60s this weekend.  Hoping to have the boat out Monday so I can have some fresh walleye for the smoker!!!

I think that is all I have.  First year growing it and wanted to see what kinds I like the best and does the best.  Plus I wanted to try the colors.

Running a bit behind in checking glogs, but I will get caught up.

Here are 4 trays of my March 1st planted peppers.  The fourth tray are some of the late comers and some of my germination overload.

After looking at the pics, it would appear that tray one has a germination pot in it as well.

My first 4 pack of BMJ are looking good.

Here is my tray of BMJ and a tray of some late comers from my first planting.  These two trays are lagging behind a bit.  These used to be two trays of a set of four that were on this shelf, but the other two trays have been potted up into gallons already.

My OW, even though you can't tell in this pic, are starting to get really dark green.  Can't wait to get these babies in the dirt.

70/72 tomato cells germed for me.  I should be set in this part of the garden.  I was worried about the ground cherries, so in my cabbage and what not trays, I planted some more to sort of hedge my bets.

Great updates HBJ! Definitely looks like you'll be busy in the garden this year. Just tried the first pods off my black Hungarian I grew from seeds from pods out of a box I purchased from you last year. Couldn't wait any longer so picked them premature, but they were outstanding anyway. I need to thank you for introducing me to these peppers. They'll definitely be a constant on my grow list for sure. Can't wait to try a ripe one now.

Glad you liked it.  I didn't grow them this season, but I shouldn't be short any peppers and I do have some new ones to try.  They get a dark maroon red color for me when they were ripe.  Thick fleshed.
