I hate seeing a wounded animal suffer

There has been a poor seagull with a right broken wing sitting out in the rain in the lot of the company next door to my work for three days now. I called animal control and they won't come out and the bird rescue place does not have the staff to come out so the poor thing is going to slowly starve to death as it can't fly. That just bothers me greatly. Thanks for letting me rant. :(

Damn. A year or two ago I drove past a small seagull that was on the side of one of the busiest roads in our county. It's wing was snapped (clearly hanging) and I thought it was dead till I saw it moving when I looked back through the rear-view mirror. I pulled into the nearest parking lot and tried to catch it. It tried to run away, so I end up on the road, holding up around 4-5 lanes of traffic. Had a lot of people laughing, and some didn't even want to stop - threatened to run -me- down.

I finally caught the poor bugger on the other side of the road when I went to grab it and it clamped down on my index finger with it's beak.. It was so scared that it wouldn't let go - which worked perfect because I was able to pick it up and get it into the car.

We took it to the nearest wildlife park/reserve (around an hour 1 drive away on the highway), but right away they took one look and told us they would have to put it down. :(

Little hope for them if they end up with broken wings, sadly. They can't balance to stay afloat on the water and that's where they get the majority of their food.

Any chance you catch it and take it to a vet to at least have it put down?

I gotta admit, that's something that gets to me too. I hate to see an innocent animal suffering like that - confused and terrified. I imagine it wouldn't look too good if you were to go out during business hours and put an end to it, though...

Thanks guys. Yes the bird sanctuary also told me it would be euthanized because my description sounded like a compound fracture.
This is the second one I have seen like this as there was one a while back in our yard here with a broken and bleeding wing. The poor thing was dead the next morning when I came into work and it made me weep to be honest. I bet if it were an eagle or a hawk they would send someone right out. That pisses me off. No animal should have to suffer that long before dying. There are hundreds of gulls in this area as we are close to a landfill and the SF bay is not far away.

That would bother me too. IMO the thing to do, although perhaps difficult, would be to put the poor thing down yourself.

As a kid I was eager to 'hunt' and shot a bird with my BB gun. It fell to the ground, which in and of itself didn't bother me, but when I went over and saw it squirming I immediately regretted it. Although I no longer wanted to kill it, I shot it 6 more times before it died. I have no idea how it survived all that but it was not a good experience for a little kid.

It's a difficult situation since it's on someone elses property and I have no weapon. Used to have a very accurate high dollar air rifle that would be useful right now. The gull doesn't look to be in distress at all as it walks away when it sees anyone moving it's way but I would think it must be in pain with a wing dragging the ground. If someone here at work would help I would see about capturing it but I seem to be the only one with a soft heart.

I am in the same boat. I always help them if I can, they deserve it. Would be good to see a world which lives in harmony with nature, without careless people.

Faster than starvation.

We had a racoon in the garden about a year ago that appeared friendly and let us pick it up. We took it to the local humane society (it stank FYI) and they told us it had distemper and had to be destroyed. .. very sad :-(

On fishing boats I've heard and seen people say and add alka seltzer to a sardine to try and kill pelicans etc. that were stealing their bait.

Never seemed to work as far as I saw.

MAYBE the aspirin in it might kill them-thin their blood,I don't know,eventually-but fish oil thins blood.
At least in humans-I'm on blood thinners.
Aspirin AND fish thin my blood out if I eat either with my Coumadin.

Aspirin can kill your dog if you give it the wrong dosage or for too long-

Note that individual dogs metabolize aspirin at very different rates. This inconsistency can lead to an unexpected accumulation of dangerous breakdown products in the animal’s body. As few as two regular-strength aspirin tablets can produce severe organ damage in some medium-size (30 pounds, 13.6kg) dogs. Follow the exact dosage given in the table on page 571 to avoid this complication.

I guess people think birds can't belch or fart.
They never eat stuff that gives them gas?

Exploding bird is pure BS.
You may kill them with the aspirin though...I don't know for sure but if I remember right, original Alka Seltzer was sodium bicarbonate and aspirin, might be wrong...might be one of the other versions.

Several years ago a seagull flew out in front of my car.
We were going MAYBE 15mph at the time.

It bounced off the hood and I stopped.

It must have been in shock,it let me pick it up and check it out.

I saw nothing wrong with it,though it refused to fly when I let it go.

I decided since it was so friendly I'd watch it for a while.

It drove around all day doing estimates with me (everytime I parked it didn't try and fly away though I left the windows open).

It ate part of a Jack in the box burger and a few fries while sitting on my Delta 88's dash board.

After cruising with me all day we went to the Marina Dell Ray Breakwater and fished all night.
The bird stuck around all night in the car.
Ate a couple dines and some mackerle I had left before we went home.

Loved my dash board I guess.

I left the windows open all night when I got home and the local cats killed it in my car before I got up the next day.

Feathers all over my car and remains on the lawn.

I do think it had internal injuries or it would have flown of at some time.

I don't think it was tame and hung out because I'm a nice guy.
I think it probably would have eventually died anyway from internal injuries or...

If it was me,I'd get out my long handled fish net and catch it.
Since vets are as expensive as regular quacks these days,I'd kill it the same as I'd kill a chicken for dinner.

Might sound cold blooded but I've had to kill a few messed up wild critters with a STRONG blow to the head.
I think it is more humane than other ways in general.
You said you don't have a firearm...
If it eats, maybe a pain killer overdose would be cool.

Maybe a friend has some Moma's little helpers around?

I'm sure you can google a few humane ways to put it out of it's misery.
Something that IF it's still eating(toss it some sardines or?).
Seagulls DON"T need water to eat, ever been to a dump OR left your bait ice chest open?

I agree with you,IF it was something considered as cool you'd have every tree hugger type running to save the bird.

Oh Jesus. Pun intended. Either pray that this will get resolved "on it's own" or do something about it.
Kill the poor animal already. PLEASE! I wouldn't let my wife of 25 years suffer like that for a goddamn minute. And as far as I know, she is no better than a seagull as far as living souls are concerned... Who am I to judge?

Or just let it suffer and STFU about it. What do you want us here on THP to do about it?
Why would you share this piece of shit of your life experience? (The experience sucks, not you personally)

Thanks for the good night's sleep.

This thread REALLY pisses me off. Jesus H. Christ.

Scovie I posted this at the same time you posted-take it accordingly-an edit.
I was talking to Impending...

Your post IS out of context.Except for the mythical using Alka Seltzer to blow it up.

The original poster said he already used the phone book and talked to people already.

IT REALLY BOTHERS HIM THAT HE IS HELPLESS IN EITHER SAVING THE BIRD OR GIVING IT A HUMANE DEATH.

I don't see what your point is - totally out of context.(impending)

It seems the bird WILL be put down OR die from injuries,as is.
No help was offered by the local people he called.
I never said use a poison that would tourture the bird, just make it wake up dead.
Due to the guys lack of a fire arm.
I'd not use a pellet gun myself.
I'd want a quick kill.A .22 will do the job better than the best airgun in general.

A post was made while I was posting.
I was answering Impending...

Seems like it is FOR YOU AND ME a sensitive subject.
To a point.

I VERY WELL MIGHT BE WRONG,BUT I think why the original post was posted was because the poster felt he was among friends and as he stated - needed to vent-he hurts about what the bird is going through.

Not trying to rag on anyone,I just see why he Might/probably have posted as he did.

I think Scoville posted a similar train of thought.Probably posted better than I did but said-to me the same thing.

My opinion is exactly what I got paid for it.

Heartless and uncalled for. Another name added to my ignore list.

It was a joke to lighten up the situation. If you are weeping for a wounded seagull (and there is nothing wrong with that) you shouldn't be eating meat from your grocery store if you are trying not to support animal cruelty.

I have a .22-250 but the sound report would bring the police

And who are you to tell me what is ethical and what is not? You equate eating meat to this? Talk about a far stretch!

The most REAL thing said in this god forsaken thread. Am I wrong?

Lord knows that bird is God forsaken. Am I wrong again?

Please. Kill that bird.
