IPN Grow Log (New to growing!!)

Hello everyone!

I am very new to growing/gardening. I have been reading things online etc...to learn the best strategies.

So far I have began growing my seeds about 1 week ago. These seeds consist of:
Jalapeno M
Sweet Banana Pepper
Cucumber
Tomtato
Bell Pepper
Cayenne Chili Pepper

I was looking into growing something with some more :mouthonfire:, but I am guessing they do not carry seeds for such plants in regular stores. Any suggestions?

I have started using the paper towel method. Since I do not have a heating pad yet, I have put the seeds on top of my router/modem for a little heat. I think they have been consistantly between 70-80 degrees F up there. So far my cucumber/tomato seeds have already began growing, and I transplanted them yesterday into soil. The pepper seeds still may be a week or two (or so I have read).

I do not have a grow light or any special equipment to assist the plants in growing once they break the soil surface. I may have to look into getting something in the next week.

I am planning to get some cups once they need the 3" space. Other than that, I will be transplanting outside once the weather gets a bit warmer.

Thanks for reading, and any comments/info is welcome :).

Welcome!
Lowe's has Orange Habanero seeds. Ferry-Morse packs them. They've also got a few other medium-hot seeds. They also carry inexpensive 2-bulb 4 foot flouresent light fixtures, less than $10. Wal-Mart has those too.

Oh, Ya...I forgot...I got all of my light fixture (4 foot fluorescents) from Walmart, along with the bulbs. Very inexpensive and works great too.

All but a few sweet banana pepper seeds began to germinate last night. I transplanted them into the soil :). yay!

Even one of the cucumber seeds shot up to a sprout (real quick!).

The other peppers may not be too far behind!!

Once you see the cotyledons (seed leaves) poping up, you want to get light on them pretty quickly. If you don't have lights yet, put them in a nice sunny window until you get some. But don't wait too long or they'll get leggy on you.

I just put them in a southbound window for now, with a desk lamp over top of them also. I will have to look at getting some lights quicker than I thought .

Next thing is to figure out where I can put the light once I get it. I don't have any neat plant growing space yet :(

My Wal-Mart had live Habaneros last year as well as some other Hot Varities.

Regular incandescent bulbs will be too hot (not sure what's in your desk lamp). Get a florescent fixture and a couple bulbs and put it within a couple of inches of the plant tops.

Ok, Thanks everyone. I am planning to hit up some stores in a bit to get a light. Alot of my tomato/cucumbers have already popped through the surface.

The lamp I have is about a foot away so I don't think that will overheat them (at least until I get a fluorescent light).

I guess the next question is, how wet do I keep the soil? Do I need to consistently dampen the soil every couple days?

AHH! I still have seedlings too, I need more room!

Just bought a 2-bulb 48" light fixture with a couple T12 lights. I got it hooked up so the light is hanging from a saw horse straddled between the bed and a box (in the spare bedroom). Using the Christmas light timer that we bought to turn the light on/off 16/8.

I should be getting some pics soon :)

Well, It has been a while and I just got back from my week vacation in Florida! I have some pics!!

Luckily I had a buddy from work come water my plants while I was gone. I got back and transplanted the cucumbers and tomatoes into some plastic cups with drainage holes poked into the bottom.

Here is my Light Setup I was talking about:

And while I was gone my Jalepenos/Banana peppers also began to sprout:

Continued...

And unfortunately I didn't think the other tray was going to sprout so quickly (since the first set of peppers took like 7 days to come up). Here is a pic of the poor guys that got stuffed in the dark for a few days (while I was in Florida). I have them under the grow light now, hopefully they will make a comeback. If not at least I planted a ton haha.
