It's never too early to get started!

Sooo... 2022 season is over and most of my 2023 plants are already there - no reason not to start a new thread already! πŸ˜ƒ

See my previous glog... https://thehotpepper.com/threads/2022-too-early-to-get-started.75362/

While all my current plants are technically overwinterers, only a couple have grown through the 2022 season and are considered interesting enough to keep for next seasons grow.

Let's start with the famous Schneider farms SB plant, which will be going into it's third season in 2023. It currently doesn't look all that nice but that was also the case during the winter of 2021 so no worries here...

Next in row is my Scotch Brains plant...

And then there's the Humble Servants Homestead (HSH) SB, which was also elected to stay for next season...

This is the end.... Until it all starts again.

The end? πŸ€” for some plants it is but new life has already begun! πŸ˜‰

@MarcV those bonnets are beautiful, looks like you had a great season! Good luck with the overwintering!
Thanks... I must have been lucky. Glad I did not only get those tiny pods...

I think you had a pretty good year, Marc! I LOVE that 5-lobe pod. It's beautiful. I wish a plant could be developed to only produce 5-lobes. Congrats on this year's grow, and here's to many more .

Congratulations on the satisfying end of the season!

Wanna ask how you do not have an aphids infestation after moving plants inside? Did I miss some info, I should probably read more thoroughly the conversations between people in glogs... πŸ™ƒ I didn't saw any aphids on my balcony but soon as they came inside, even if they were cut and left with few leaves, aphids started to appear. I kindaaccept the fact that I always have to have something to spray peppers in my hause but thought that cutting them almost bare and watching left leaves carrefully would be enough.

I actually have very little aphid problems on my plants. Nevertheless, when I take a plant inside for the winter, I first cut it down to the desired size and remove most if not all leaves. Then I remove the soil from the roots as much as possible and do a serious trim down there also.
Next I thoroughly rinse the entire plant with a pyrethrum spray, including the roots. Then the plant goes in a small pot with fresh soil.
If I do get an aphid infestation after that, I discard the plant!

JeromΓn peppers are growing very well...

Got a couple of pineapple plants also. Both are grown from the crown of a pineapple fruit. The one on the left is from a "real" edible fruit, the one on the right is from an ornamental pineapple (also real 😁). I wonder if they will ever fruit. The ornamental plant is already quite a bit larger than the mother plant was. The other one is getting quite big also, and is very spiny...

Af for my grow of next year... not sure if I should talk about that as I'm well known for changing my mind every so often... :seeya:

But my mind is pretty much fixed at the moment... of course I will keep growing the overwintering scotch bonnets if they make it through the winter. For the HSH and papa dreadie plants I'm sure they will succeed. The schneider farms on the other hand is very reluctant to flush out again, so it remains to be seen what it's going to do. But at this time I'm not going to add any more SB plants to the list because, to be fair, I already have more bonnets in the freezer than I can use in a year time and these all came from those 3 overwintering plants. All the rest I gave away or were turned into powder.

What I missed in my grow this year were yellow 7pots. I still do have quite a few of them in the freezer from the 2023 season but I want a fresh harvest. Sooo... currently I have 7pot brain strains in my grow box. Normally I would just grow the yellow ones but I also added red, caramel and chocolate variants just "because I can" 😁. I did have issues with germinating the yellow ones though... I wanted to grow seeds from Semillas. I bought seeds immediately when their web shop was reopened. Those seeds didn't germinate though... πŸ€” then I tried growing the seeds that I had left from WHP but those didn't germinate either 😲. I currently have seeds sown from Texas Hot Peppers... still awaiting germination. The other colors are from THP also and are already up (sown earlier than the yellow variant).

So... brain strains is what it's going to be 🫣 for 2025. Just like with the bonnets there will be wayyy too many...

What about the Baker Creek Bonnets?

OK, the Baker Creek bonnet seeds are in the soil! 😁
I also planted another couple of Papa Dreadie G2 2018 seeds. I hope they are still OK. They germinated without any issues last year, so I guess they may still be OK.

This will have an impact on my current seedlings though. I want a strict limitation on the number of plants in the 2025 season. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it though, but probably the red, caramel and brown brain strains will have to go... 🫀

I'm really looking forward to trying the Jeromin! Hopefully I can get my hands on a good dehydrator and make some homemade paprika!

I've never grown yellow 7 pots but I hear really good things. The Scotch Brains that I grew were remarkable, I can only imagine the 7 pot yellows are citrusy?

That should free up a little space for the next round of seeds ;)
No... no... no... too much is just... too much! But I am interested in maybe some low heat annuums like zapotec jalapeño or even some pubescens. They don't count 😁 but I currently don't have any of these seeds...

If the seeds I gave you don't germinate, I should soon(ish) have fresh ones. They are grown in perfect isolation πŸ™‚

I see the yellow 7pot as a super scotch bonnet, although that may not be entirely correct of course. I use them solely to heat up my pineapple-mango-jam. It only takes one fruit, compared to the maybe 5 scotch bonnets it took in the past. To use them in a fresh meal (stir fry or as a topping on a pizza for instance), they are -to me - way too hot. In this respect, having more than one 7pot plant is overkill...

Haha. Well, if I can ever help enable you with low heat annuums types like zapotec jalapeΓ±o or with pubescens I have a good stash of isolated seeds of those varieties and you're only a stamp away. BTW, I picked up some Jeromin seeds from Neil, which I IIRC are from the ones you originally prospected. If so, thanks for sharing those out. I just planted a couple into my indoor grow and am looking forward to them.

If you like to make spicy jams... I just updated the hot pineapple-mango-jam recipe in my profile. Update was long overdue. I used to make it with pineapple only but with the mango added it's really better! And the bonnets are replaced by 7pot. One is usually enough to spice it up 😁
