JCW's 2015 Glog

Well, here's to another year. I wanted to downsize from last year, and ended up practically doubling everything.  Started germinating on Jan 22 using paper towel method.  Tried 2 ways, one in cups with the seeds on top, other the way I have always done with the seeds in paper towel in ziploc.  Both have worked, but the paper towel in ziploc seems faster, maybe better temp control there.  So far have about 55 seeds in dirt after 11 days with many of them already popped up and looking happy.

Almost an embarrassing setup compared to many I see on here, but it worked great 10 years ago, and still worked fine last year so I figure no need to change yet.

Will need another rack of lights this year for the increase in volume I have.

Grow list as of today (updated 3/17 hopefully for the last time).  I tried to keep track of the sources, so hopefully I have given proper credit here.

You've been busy, Justin.  The plants are looking great.  A little bit of yellow at this point is no biggie if they're destined for to be planted out in ground.

Dang, Micheal, that's pretty strange looking.  Is it greening up with the change?  Except for the green leaves at the bottom, I could almost believe that's a genetic thing.
I figure been about a quarter as busy as you have.

It was almost white and the top leaves where almost see through. looks like it's starting to get a little green in the veins now and more of a yellow. I'm thinking it's going to bounce back. Most the other plants that where having problems are already showing improvement and darkening with lots of new growth.
I am color blind as hell so not even sure which of the dark leaved ones are purple.  But in second picture above the lone guy in the bottom right corner is yaki brown.   The other dark leaved ones I have going are Pimentda De Neyde, 7JPN, Black Scorpions Tongue, Black Hungarian, and the cotlydons of  purple cayenne.  Being color blind makes it touch sometimes for pods that done change much in my eyes like a light green pod that ripens to peach.  Sometimes a dark green that ripens to dark red under low light in the middle of the canopy can be tough.  I have to get the family to help sometimes.   For that reason not too fond of growing mustard ones and the ones that ripen to green, just never can tell.

Awesome grow list Justin!wow 145 varieties and everything looking good. What's up with the sweet datil?or are they supposed to look like that?anyway good job.Am impressed.

Bangin list, and my names on it!   :D

I got a few pineapple ground cherry tomato sees left if you want to try them. Size of a typical cherry, has a husk like a tomatillo and taste exactly like pineapples. Would make a killer salsa verde

My first year growing them so I couldn't tell you about their growing habits but from what I read they stay low and sprawling.
Here in south africa they grow wild we call them appelliefie  / gooseberrie

You know, being color blind might be good sometimes. Probably keeps you from worrying so much as often. Although, I guess you don't really see things as early either though. Damned if you, damned if you don't.

Looking good to me, can't get much worse looking than this sweet datil

Started adding some lime to my watering mix and i've seen some improvement in the plants. I'm pretty sure I had some bad nute lock.
Are the purple ones the Yaki brown? Mine have a nice foliage like that.

I had a douglah last year that grew mutated like this shape wise but not the color.  1 month after putting in the ground was still only about 6" tall, then I just lopped almost all of it off.  The new growth came out better and eventually caught up with most of the others, but only produced about 5 - 10 pods all season.

Thanks, I need to update the list one more time, might have found a couple I missed, but still under 150 I hope.  Was just outside trying to figure out where I am going to put them.

Done with germinating / transplanting the hot peppers for a while until they need some bigger homes.  A few will need that soon. 288 started in 48 cell trays for now.  Will have to trim this down by about 100 plants in mid April as I start to run out of room when moving to bigger containers.  Anyone in Central IL needing some plants, there will probably be quite a few I will be giving away.  Probably going to have a lot of sweet peppers and tomatoes in surplus as well.

192 in these trays in various stages coming along pretty well.

This is the oldest set, needing bigger homes soon.

Did you get the BOC from me? Mine look like that as well. I had got the seeds from a pod order last fall. It's gotta be either genetic or they are nute hogs but 2 out of 3 of my plants look like that.

The color started coming back once I started adding lime to my watering mix.
Same with that sickly sweet datil I shared up above earlier posts.

It's looking much better than that yellow mess it was

I didn't get this one from you.  But maybe something genetic like you say.  Both of mine started off like that, one came out of it and looks fine and normal now.  Maybe this one needs a little lime or something.  Never have done a PH test on soil, so wouldn't know for sure.  If I only loose a few its acceptable, have too many anyway.

A little lime wouldn't hurt it, better safe than sorry. A lil extra nitrogen too. Are you using promix?

Yes using promix with this tray.  I been hitting them pretty good with a 6-4-4 fertilizer, probably getting close to overdoing it.  Might hit this guy with the lime and maybe it needs a little more nitrogen, but not too worried about it.

Seems the promix may turn a little acidic despite their claims of adding lime to their mix. Or maybe it's just a coincidence

Catching some rays finally.

Everything's looking really good. What did you use to make the holes, auger or post hole digger? Nice idea with the plastic and holes instead of tilling it all up.

Post hole digger.  Good exercise.  Hope to have all done in a week and filled with the mix so come may it will be easy.  The ground here is untillable.  Right now its so wet it would clog up almost any tiller.  Its pure clay, stickier than hell.  Will cover the new area with the grass with black plastic in a few days once all the holes dug to kill off the grass. The end where I am standing in the picture is always really wet, the other end is a lot drying.  Never have figured out the reason, the area is pretty flat.  The peppers last year on the wetter end definitely suffered more from it.  Finally after a few months figured that must have been causing all the weird growth and pulled up the plastic mulch there and they got a lot better but was mostly too late.  Probably wont mulch the one end this year hoping it can try out some if not too much rain.

maybe an old drain tile or leach field. I did the same thing with my garden. Was way too much grass to pull up so I just laid heavy weed mat over it and mulch. Did the trick. For my raised beds only two are dug out and grass removed. The others are right ontop the weed mat and only 8" deep of soil.

Yeah Illinois dirt is pretty crazy.  I started by tilling here then just said f*ck it and forked the whole 50x15 plot.  It took awhile but I think it was worth it.  Really got the compost mixed up well.  Just retilled it all last night and there were worms everywhere.  And yes the clay is super sticky....and heavy.

Last year when I decided to make a 10 x 25 plot there was originally going to fork it or something then decided on the post holes and mix would be less work.  Knew that clay was crap for growing anything anyway.  Worked pretty well last year.  A lot of plants in the 4 - 5 foot range and more pods than I could process.
