Melissa77754 2012 Glog

Hey Everyone
icon_smile.gif

So I figured it is about time I start a Grow log of my own and I will do my very best to keep it up to date. With two kiddos and a massive amount of plants my days can be pretty hectic. I grew jalapenos and serranos last season, had a decent harvest considering the small pot size I used. In July I met a nice lady giving away hot pepper seeds to newbies on GW, decided to give them a try, August met Smokemaster through a generous SASBE offer and the rest is history!! lol

I started a batch in late August so I have some "overwinters" if you will, living in SoCal I can grow year round with the right protection from time to time. I started out with a cheap 12'x7' hoop house and when the winds thrashed that I bought two 6x8 with shelving, still the cheaper plastic hot house type but the shelving makes it heavy and the winds don't phase it. I also have a 6x6 indoor tent with a 4 bulb T5 and 2 monster size CFL's. The growth indoors versus out does not even compare, T5's are amazing! Have to thank my bro for giving me that fixture.

I am hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew being it's my first real season growing super hots mainly. I plan to sell some plants along the way to help fund my pepper growing addiction

My log will be pretty picture heavy which I am sure most will not mind! Enjoy and happy pepper growing to everyone!!

Great pics Melissa. I decided to get going on my own worm tea here pretty soon. I saw your even cutting up your own fish! Good luck with that, hopefully you don't spill some of that own yourself . If you don't mind me asking, what are you using for compost? Cow manure, bat guano,....? Trying to figure out what compost to use for mine. As of right now I haven't used any compost at all yet I already got some buds and pods.
Thanks and good job

i thought the one blk scorp tongue was bushing out i realized it was bent over so i tied it up
when i did i noticed that it has flowers that did not open yet,pod to come!!! :woohoo:  :onfire:

thanks your friend Joe

Ha, thats the same sentiment my garden sitter has. He wrote me today saying hes been stirring everyday. "yikes" he said....lol

LOL, lucky you have a sitter, don't think I can even bribe the husband to stir it, raunchy stuff man! lol

You got me so jealous Melissa!!! Grrrrrr! First with the pods, then with the cool kitchen garb! I had a few Poblanos this round that are smallish too. I will probably pull them Sunday for another pepper dinner. I think I saw some of those Black Scorpion Tongues at my Nursery...I'll have to go back and take a look since I have a few spots to fill out there. I was planning on all Jalapenos for poppers in the empty spots, but you got me second guessing. How do they taste?

Awww come on Shane, your Poblanos and bells put mine to shame! Lol. You got those down that's for sure! The other pods will be rolling in for you in no time. The black scorpion tongue has some nice heat and flavor, only tried them in the purple stage so far. But I have to admit they are pretty seedy, and not really large enough to stuff them. I am sure they will make a great salsa, a little hotter than a serrano but with a better taste. Wouldn't hurt to fill up one spot with it, just for looks alone. More poppers is always better though, planted alot of biker billy's for that reason. Looking forward to not having to buy jalapenos at the market this summer! :)

My aji HGC is wayyyy behind

Aji HGC, refresh my memory on which one that is?

excellent looking peppers

Thank you! :)

Haha thanks Aaron. I bought a pump so I don't have to touch that stuff after, will fish out all the big pieces with a net of some sort. Then dump my pump in, attach the 100ft hose I bought and go to town feeding everything. We shall see how it all ends up, need some kind of mask for that day. Holy crap does it stink, bottle fish ferts has nothing on this! LOL. Ok well what I use for compost really varies, I almost always use this http://www.4hydropon...o=ancientForest. But I also use really fresh worm castings, compost from my own pile and recently tried this stuff http://www.chickityd...d=61&Itemid=103. Really depends on what I have around. I also use Roots organics line, the liquid nutrients, perfect for making teas. Since you don't have a lot of plants, you should look in to their player pack, it's 34.99 and will last you the entire season I would think. http://aurorainnovat...tsorganics.html It has 7 of their products, all liquid form and will cover any nutrient needs your plant may have. If I was still small scale, I would use this all the time. But their line can be pricey for the amount of plants I have. I tend to buy in bulk anyway, found a source for 2.5 ga of their buddha grow, at a great price too. Now that MAY last me all season! Lol. Good luck with the tea, hope that info helps! :)

Lookin good Melissa!

Thank you Jamison!

Wow Melissa, again with the awesome plants? Do you have any plants that are doing crappy to make some of us beginners feel better? Lol! Seriously though great as usual. How often do you give them the tea? How much per plant? Brewing my first batch as I write this, so any advice from you would be Great! Thanks in advance. Eric

P.S. Stupid desert heat and wind is KILLING my grow this year.

Eric of course I have plants that aren't doing well, but do I show them off?? Heck no! Lol. I try to give everything tea 1x per week, but more likely to make it happen every two weeks. In between I use the buddha grow & buddha bloom by Roots organics, liquid nutrients, very much like a tea, just add water and feed to plants.

That desert heat is brutal! I give you two thumbs up for even trying to grow in it, I wouldn't last an hour in the yard with that heat! lol. But don't worry, I will make sure you have some peppers this year! Do you get frost out there? Wasn't sure if you could grow year round in vegas? Get a mini greenhouse like mine if you do get frost, worked out great for me during the winter.

Now I know your secret!
You're feeding them cocaine!

Ohhhhh Shane, how did I know if someone said anything about the powdery stuff it would be you AND with a smart ass comment! You so remind me of one of my brothers! haha. It's Diametcous Earth my friend, had to bust it out for the damn earwigs and pill bugs. And what do you know, when I went out to sprinkle it on the ground, I found a bunch having a nice meal on my plants. So guess what I did, covered them all in that powdery goodness! That was the last meal they had! :P

the interesting one from my mix looks like FIRECRACKER PEQUIN

thanks your friend Joe

Thanks Joe, going to label that plant now. Really love the colors on it, nice looking pods. I see powder in their future! :)

Soooooo my Cantina yellow decided it would be a Cantina Orange instead! First ripe pod. Boy do these have some good heat!! The flavor is nice too, Shane one will come your way in the next couple weeks. Probably just wait for the train and send it with that! :D
IMG_3618.jpg

Next to my iphone for size comparison, good size pods!
IMG_3620.jpg

This is a full shot of my NOT choco hab, thinking of potting this bad boy up to a 30 gallon. It's just a work horse, so why not give it some bigger shoes?!

Full shot of potted black scorpion tongue and in ground black scorpion tongue, both grow tree like.

Thanks Denniz! Ahhhh I see, my choc hand grenades are starting to ripen and the plant is stretching/bushing out at the same time! The one I have in the ground now has a pod set too. Will save one for ya! Sample pack will head your way in a couple weeks, just swing by my mom's to pick it up. :)

Thanks Melissa, yeah I'm a die hard that's for sure.Lol, I'm going to post some pics soon of my weak plants, just need to figure out the pic posting thing for sure before I do.
Do you give each plant a certain amount of the tea, or just a good drink? Those Purple Bhuts are super cool looking, 100 pods and adding, my lord you're doing something right that's for sure! Thanks for the advice, Emon

That's some stunning pod pornage :D
Btw my Chocolate Hand Grenade's are going great again! After only a week since the last picture they look like this.

So now you are chumming your peppers too? :onfire:

as to that other page:
Double dipping now- meat you were next on my list.....good to see the grenades are doing well!
Melissa-The not a choc is a cool looking pod...hot/not???Taste?...yep , I'm a tough customer today!!!

and since it popped up again.......I say in a subtle trancelike hypnotic voice" please save some for Dave, please ...."

You know you can always count on me for a smart ass comment! Can't wait for the Cantina!!! Everyone with the pod love so far...its a beautiful thing! Your plants look amazing as usual. My purples are really productive to, every single flower setting a pod! Mine are much smaller pods, will have to see how big the ones off the in-ground plant get??? I figured you were dusting with either DE or Sevin...I've all but given up on the leaf eaters, as long as they don't mess with the pods! Once that starts to happen its ON! I have some interesting stuff that'll be headed your way as well once ripe!

Keep up the great updates little sister!

well now i have some idea what my EL ORO DE EQUIDOR will look like

i thinks they turn yellow

it makes sense to me considering the name means "THE GOLD OF EQUIDOR"

THANKS MELISSA!!

your friend Joe

Pods looking really awesome, pepper goddess! And a nice little harvest, as well!
I always enjoy seeing what a good grow looks like!

Continued success, Melissa

Thanks for the advice Melissa. I'll definately be looking into getting that players pack from Roots Organic. I'm also trying to convince my wife in allowing me to start my own hydrolysate like what you and PG have, just on a much smaller scale. I figure 5 gallons is going to enough for my 28 plants.
Thanks again, and good luck to you.

I don't give each plant a certain amount. Sometimes I water them all the way through with it, but if I didn't make enough and I want to feed a lot of plants with it, then I just give them a big drink. It's all a learning process to begin with, but once you get it down it will be a piece of cake.

I have to admit you lost me a little buddy! lol. The not choco hab we haven't tasted a full size pod yet. When the plant first flowered it set three pods, and they remained pea size while it stretched. After it started to set flowers again those pods ripened at that small size, I ate a whole one and even though tiny, it packed a punch! My tongue and lips burned for awhile, as for the flavor, taste like a chinense. I am hoping with larger pods now ripening we will get to taste the true flavor of a full size pod. Will update on flavor and heat again in a few days :) And I will have plenty of samples to go around pretty soon, stay in touch.

I know Shane, that's why I like you so much! Part of my hot pepper family! Lol. That Cantina is very tasty, you are going to like it! I wish I could ignore the earwigs and pill bugs. Little bastards were everywhere, I made a big dent in their population now! So my plants can start to recover, some in the large bed never got to take off because of them. I thought I had slugs for the longest time, until I went out one night and saw them everywhere! I found some mites too, but Azamax and neem have now taken care of those too! Full speed ahead again in the large bed! Amazing how fast they put on new growth with good weather. Train is getting closer, if there is anything you are looking for message me and I will include it if I have seeds. TTYL

Paul you are too kind

Thank you for the continued support!! You know your going to have some samples come your way this season too! ;) Hope all is well on your end, hard to keep up with my own grow now. Miss visiting everyone's grow logs!

Aaron

Ohhhh Aaron, I am not even too sure I will do it again! lol. Raunchy stuff, but the husband has been stirring it for me every day so I get a little break from that smell! haha. Honestly, it only smells when you open the lid. You can't smell it otherwise which is nice. Not too sure how the neighbors will feel when I feed the ground with it! lol. You will like that roots players pack, best bang for your buck. Good luck with everything! :)

Little update, had no kiddos today so I worked in the yard from 7-8. Longggggg day, but I picked up a yard of dirt and got a lot of plants potted up. Very productive day, still not done, but almost there. Starting another 30 varieties tomorrow to add to the collection, but this time I will only start 2 of each variety. I tell you I want to grow them all! :D

My NOT choco habs ripening, this guy looks HOT!! :fire:
