Melissa77754 2012 Glog

Hey Everyone
icon_smile.gif

So I figured it is about time I start a Grow log of my own and I will do my very best to keep it up to date. With two kiddos and a massive amount of plants my days can be pretty hectic. I grew jalapenos and serranos last season, had a decent harvest considering the small pot size I used. In July I met a nice lady giving away hot pepper seeds to newbies on GW, decided to give them a try, August met Smokemaster through a generous SASBE offer and the rest is history!! lol

I started a batch in late August so I have some "overwinters" if you will, living in SoCal I can grow year round with the right protection from time to time. I started out with a cheap 12'x7' hoop house and when the winds thrashed that I bought two 6x8 with shelving, still the cheaper plastic hot house type but the shelving makes it heavy and the winds don't phase it. I also have a 6x6 indoor tent with a 4 bulb T5 and 2 monster size CFL's. The growth indoors versus out does not even compare, T5's are amazing! Have to thank my bro for giving me that fixture.

I am hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew being it's my first real season growing super hots mainly. I plan to sell some plants along the way to help fund my pepper growing addiction

My log will be pretty picture heavy which I am sure most will not mind! Enjoy and happy pepper growing to everyone!!

I'll look at your list...but first, DAYUMMMMM!!!! Your pods look AWESOME!!! You got a lot of "unknowns" and "can't remembers" going on  but hey I lost track of one of my plants all together and I only have about 140...ish??? Looking forward to that pod and the train. Will probably wait to work some trades with you later on for next season anyway too...

Yes I do have a lot of unknowns and can't remember, this is what happens when one person takes on this many plants! I started off with sticky labels, realized after awhile those didn't work because they faded to the point where you couldn't tell what it said! Lol. Now I do the popsicle sticks, works great. But I really need to put my ptouch to use now. Next year I will be sure to keep on top of the plant tags! haha! Oh and I did inventory this past weekend, 420 pepper plants.....I am INSANE! Haha! And I am going to be starting 30 more varieties! crazy I tell ya! But I really do want to grow them all. Got some really cool pubescen varieties to start. More wilds, and other interesting varieties. Don't just look at my list, that is only what I am growing. Have close to 400 varieties, so if there is something you have been wanting to grow, just let me know and I may just have it! ;)

I used popsicle sticks at first, but they take up moisture and end up fading to. I'm using plastic ware now, much better. They fade too, but only if you handle them too much. A couple lessons there as well. Instead of putting the labels behind my plant facing inward on my containers I put them facing out...and still have to dig to see them on some plants. Hopefully your p-touch fixes you up! I think I am going to get a white stencil pen and mark the pots from now on.

OMG Melissa! 420 plants! And 30 more to start! Yes, YOU ARE INSANE :crazy: ;
but in a good way ;)
The most important thing is that it's not a burden.
I know that isn't the case for you; you obviously really
'dig' :D what you are doing, even if it is a lot to handle!

You do us all proud, girl! Keep it up!

every time i stop by my jaw just falls of just looking at the pods and plants...anyways crazy grow mom your so good in what you doing, you should open your own nursery already

DAMN IT SHANE! I posted a comment on this thread immediatly when I saw the update, stupid Android phone wouldn't send it so I had to tturn off my phone. Now I see you got another first page post  :)

Anyways, sorry Melissa you know how Shane gets though :).
It looks like you only gotta a little bit before the AJCHG ripens and you can let us all know how it tastes
And the last pic is one  looking pepper :) good going
Aaron

I can be hell when I'm away from my plants!...and that "NOT a choc....." pic is great!

Let's see Melissa, 420 + 30x2= 480= Buttloads of attention=You think I'm hardcore?Lol. Well at least the majority of yours are friggin' awesome! Great job Meliss, keep it up. Thanks for the tips on the teas also. Eric

WOW,..............420 plants, yer sending out smoke signals! That's plenty of heat out in your garden...

Melissa those are some beautiful photos of the plants and the peppers. It's amazing the progress the plants have made in the last month.

Congrats on your efforts, the harvest (s) will be worth wait...

Thank you Greg, it sure is a lot of heat in my garden. I am loving watching all these different varieties grow, ton of work but so rewarding! The progress in the last month really is amazing, a little sunshine does wonders for peppers! :) Hope all is well in your neck of the woods, happy growing!

I couldn't even fathom trying to manage 420 plants by myself. Good on you for doing such an excellent job with them. You'll be swimming in pods by the end of the season.

Thanks compmodder26! It is a big undertaking and hard to manage, but so far it hasn't burned me out. I enjoy seeing all the new peppers develop and sharing it with everyone! Hopefully I can overwinter some large plants in the ground so I have an even earlier harvest next year :)

Lot of nice variety gorgeous plants good job it will keep you busy.

Thank you Vladan, coming from something like you who has flawless plants, it means alot! :)

UPDATE:

Ok been so dang busy the last few days, yesterday I went on a mission to pick up a plant from my buddy smokemaster :) He had a 7Pot SR that he grew in his kitchen with hydroponics, and LED light panels he made himself. This plant is amazing, I cannot believe he grew it this large in his kitchen! It needed a new home, so I said I would give it a new home.

I wish I had taken a before picture when it was in his kitchen, took my brother, mike and I to get it out. Yes it was that large! lol

Here it was all laid on the floor after we got it out.
c634668c.jpg

Here it is under my shade tree after being potted up! We gave it a good trimming too. My brother is 6' and this is taller than him! Put it in a 18 ga tote just to get use to being in soil, when it fills it up I will put it in a 65ga smart pot that I ordered.

Now on to a little funny side note, while my brother and I were trying to pot it up. A large green pepper fell from this plant. My shih-tzu is a scavenger and before we could grab it he swooped in and ate it, the whole thing! Let's just say I don't think he will make that mistake again! haha! Would not stop eating grass after, I felt bad so I gave him a bowl of milk, which he proceeded to gulp down!

Maybe next time he won't eat a fallen pepper!

Nice addition! Wow...that is one big-a$$ plant! I would get a fan style trellis and stick it in the ground somewhere! Cool stuff. Pods look great...now if we can just figure out what they are! Most of the Red Manzanos I get at the farmer's market are smallish too, and more narrow than the yellows. When the train gets to you there should still be about a bajillion red and yellow seeds I sent in there, Maybe you can give some of them a shot! I also have a small yellow plant that you're welcome to...
P1010589.jpg

The whole plant was the color of the 3 lower leaves at one point...new growth is looking good now that its in some good soil and on the right water schedule. This one was growing in with one of the large plants I purchased, and I pulled it like a weed and stuck it in some soil...

Little far for one little plant, but if you get to SD or Seal Beach lemme know and its yours if you want it!

Thanks Shane for the offer! I have two orange in the ground, the two reds in a 15ga's, and 1 unknown in a 20ga that I started from a yellow I got at the market. All hope is not lost, one has to turn out another color other than red! lol. Plus I just started some more pubes, one is janz yellow rocoto, hope it grows true! I bet someone else would love that plant, looks very healthy now. I love how resilient peppers are, just pull out and replant! Hoping the train comes next week, one cantina is almost ripe and it's a big one! :D

Huh, can you grow year-round where you are?

With the right occasional protection of course, this is socal. I do get some cooler temps from time to time. But I grew at least 100+ plants through our "winter". My Not-Choc Hab was started in August, one of my biggest chinenses. The manzanos were started in October. I used the jiffy pellets and a heat mat in my garage before, when they sprouted out they went in my cheap plastic greenhouses. They got plenty of wind too. Most made it out just fine, maybe a few casualties from being knocked off a shelf from the wind. But overall successful. :)

I'll stick it in a 5# container for now...and see what it does! I have an open spot or two, but I think they get too much sun for it. I have material to make some new raised beds...heck I dunno what I am going to do.

I keep finding more room for plants and raised beds, if I had more disposable income it would be scary! lol. We have problems friend!

damn.. more than what i can chew...
