Mixology and Cocktails!

This where most people go about tequila all wrong.  If your shooting it, your doing it wrong.  If its Silver you mix it.  If its Anejo you sip it (NOT in a shot glass) like you would a Scotch or good Bourbon.  If all you want is to get drunk, stick to Fireball  :drunk:

We have a restaurant close to us that has about 70+ bottles of tequila and mezcal, and you can put together three 1oz glass taster flights.  Its been a great way to try lots of different brands without spending too much and getting too trashed.

One of my favorites for the price is El Zacatecano Anejo
By shot I did not mean you shoot it, A shot is a pour and was very much sipping tequila.

I made rye syrup today. Rye whiskey and turbinado sugar. Mixed up an old fashioned with just a splash for the dude, he said it was the best yet. The syrup is just 1 to 1 between the rye whiskey and sugar. Warm the whiskey and stir until dissolved.

Genius!

Anyone have any good recipes that use egg white?  I really love trying the cocktails that incorporate egg white at the bar, I'd like to try making something interesting at home... I've tried an Amaretto sour and a regular whiskey sour so far, but maybe you guys know something a little more creative?

Yeah the pisco sours are big here right now but I was kinda hoping for a drink that wasnt a "sour". Maybe I'll try a gin fizz or something.

Finally got a bottle of absinthe last week and made a Sazerac on Saturday while watching the Hawks lose. Just used a regular recipe, not ready to toy with flavors quite yet.

Then today I was treated to a nice dinner where I had a jalapeno margarita and some seared ahi tuna.  When I got home I wanted one more drink so I whipped up this mezcal drink.  It's El Buho smoked Mezcal, I bought a bottle of the Key West meyer's lemon juice because I was going through fruit so fast, some simple syrup, orange bitters, and peychaud's bitters, topped with seltzer.   It was a nice refreshing drink.  I enjoyed it while walking the dogs.

Is that the one from wauconda?   I've had that stuff... its shocking good.  They have another one at the brewery that is closer to 19.5%.  Haven't been there to try it though.

Yup. Want badly to try that one!

Tonight some friends and I spent the night perfecting a copycat cocktail from a bar we like.
this is about how we narrowed it down:
1.5 oz Woodford Reserve Bourbon
.5 oz Nyak (aka cheap) cognac
.5 oz Pimento Dram Liqueur
.5 oz fresh lime juice
Angoustura Bitters
.75 oz honey syrup

Shaken in ice, then I liked to add a little seltzer water and pour over a cube or two of ice.

The bar calls it the Lion's Dick.

Th ats kinda just like a whiskey sour. I only saw the recipe for a couple seconds though, my phone wont bypass the age check.

Yeah, too many people just take shots of shitty tequila to get their party on and end up ruining themselves with it, as I may have done when I was 21.  Then they associate the tequila smell/taste with whatever they got into after drinking too much of it (in my case I woke up the next morning in a fancy hotel with m&m's in my pants... don't ask, I don't even know).  Its a bummer 'cause tequila is a really great spirit if you learn to work with it.  I've slowly been opening up my friends' minds about tequila, especially now that I have taken up this hobby.

Yep, that was me but not with tequila, mine was with cheap whiskey when I was 16 or so. 25 years later, I still gag if I smell whiskey. More Expensive bourbon, I can sip but cheaper whiskeys are a no no here.

I don't know shit about liquor though, I just drink beer myself. I keep a small stock of medium prices liquor bottles around so I can keep the wife in those fru-fru drinks, but honestly, we don't use much at all.

I really love beer, but when I turned 25 my body decided to rebel against me and I can't really drink it anymore.  I seem to be allergic to it now, sometimes the reaction is mild, like a stuffed nose, sometimes it feels like my throat is closing, sometimes I feel fine, but wake up early in the morning with severe stomach pain. So I've been trying to find a good mixed cocktail I can order when I'm out, since its like playing roulette with beer these days.
