My Pepper Growing Thread

Nice stocky, healthy plants. Go you!

I'd be interested in your opinion of the Aji Escabeche (Amarillo). I do love baccatuums.

healthy...all look healthy....that Aji has got to be a foot tall...
Yeah I planted the Aji too early. I didnt know they would grow this fast. I thought they would be kinda slow like Rocoto I had from Peru.

It is called Aji Escebeche and Aji Amarillo in Peru. It is a mildly hot pepper used in some of the "saltado" dishes they cook in Peru. My mother in law who lives in Lima sent me the seeds of them and Rocoto.

Dude! You're a mean green growing machine! Are you using any fertilizers yet?
No not really except what is already in the pottingsoil I'm using. When I move them to the bigger pots I'll use some leftover turkey manure in the bottom of the pots. It worked good with maters last year so surely the peppers will appreciate it as well

I am also growing a couple Bolivian Rainbows. They are also doing pretty good. I'll slip one of these in my friend's pot of beans one day LOL. That otta warm him up a little

Oh, direct from the source, that's pretty cool. Please keep us updates on how it does, and what you think of the peppers.

I will do that Pam. I am not sure if this pepper is here in the US other than what I have? Anyway I should have some seeds to trade next year if everything goes to my plan. I'll isolate these best I can from the others. In fact all of mine will be somewhat isolated.
Also Pam, the Aji Esc is also used in some stir frys. Its bascically a mild cooking pepper. It has some heat but its nothing that's gonna burn your tongue off LOL

I have never overwintered peppers before so I'm counting on you guys to walk me thru this process ;). I basically just need to know how much to prune them but we'll cross that bridge later in the year

Today I have been a little busy transplanting seedlings. I started another pepper table today

Now if only these little jewels will start growing! I am really excited to grow a few Bhuts and Nagas. If they are successful this Summer is gonna be a HOT one!

Proud you should be. Those look great...give them love and they will turn against you when they are grown...

LOL AJ! I just hope my stomach can take! Lately I have had stomach problems after eating hot peppers. It kinda has me worried because I really like peppers

Those plants look great Brian. I am impressed with your use of plastic cups...I think I might do that too. And packs of cups like that are very inexpensive at the dollar store. Have you poked holes in the bottom for drainage?

Dude! You're as good at growing peppers as you are with scorpions. Who knew?!

Keep an eye on the stomach bro, I'm not accepting excuses for you missing the ATS conference this year. You will be there.

PCH, I do the same thing with the plastic cups. I use two though for each plant. Put a couple of holes in the bottom of the one with the plant and then drop a couple of marbles or something in the second cup. Then slide the cup with the plant into the one with the marbles and you're good to go. Keeps the cups separated and allows for good drainage.

Sounds good! I think I'll keep my plants in their peat pellets until they outgrow them and transplant them into cups in the same way. What kind of soil mixture do you use?

I like to use plain old top soil mixed with composted cow manure. Worked pretty good for me last year. I do fertilize sparingly about every other week. Miracle grow early in the plants life and when the buds start I switch over to a bloom booster.

I know this question was directed to Patrick but I'll add my 2 cents. This year I'm transplanting directly into cups of Pro-Mix BX. Always used Miracle Grow in the past and it seemed to work, but.... I hope for better results this year. Here's an interesting article I found on potting soil.

Yes, I drill about 4 holes in the bottom of each cup. I want excess water to drain out.

Patrick, I come from a loooong line of gardeners in my family so this really comes quite naturally to me. In fact I was messing around with growing gardens before I was culturing scorps and tarantulas. Now I am not all that well versed with issues such as too much nitrogen causes aphids and stuff like that but I do understand (to an extent) on what a plant needs to grow ;)

No doubt! Lately my stomach has been kinda hurting after I eat something hot. It kinda has me worried coz I really like it hot. I'm gonna go eat some soup with a not as hot cayenne and see if it isnt better

bigt, great link thanks.

Brian. Keep up the good work dude and keep an eye on that belly too. Drink lots of water man. Best of luck to you bro.

Check this out! Aji Escabeche (Peru). They are also now in their final grow pots. I might have started these too early. They are growing alot faster than my other varieties. I'll be moving these out to the greenhouse in a few days
