Need to Vent

This has been bugging me since I read the PM last night and I'm hoping by talking about it I can get it out of my head.

I've always considered myself a generous person. I share what I have with anyone who asks. Last year I decided to ask for a few bucks for my seeds. I went round and round about asking for money. I'm retired Air Force and live on a disability pension and the money helped offset shipping and envelope costs. Nobody seemed to have a problem with it, which I am grateful for.

The PM was short and to the point. It said I just read your grow list and these are the seeds that I would like you to send me after you harvest them. They then listed all of the AISPES seeds on my list. When I first seen the pics that megamastger71 was posting of the AISPES peppers I had to have them. So I did a bit of googling and found them. Talked with megamastger71 about how to join and with his translation help I joined AISPES. I've since learned that google has a translator that does entire web sites so I didn't even need to bug megamastger71. AISPES ask folks to pay 20 Euro per year for membership. Once you do that then you have access to their seed bank. Seeds are free but limited in the amount and type available. As far as I know anyone can join.

What's my point? Anyone can get the same seeds by doing what I did. Find AISPES on the web and pay the membership fees. Do I feel a little selfish for bringing this up? Yep most certainly do. It just got to me last night. I'm sure the person who sent the PM didn't mean for it to sound the way I interpreted it.

So without a previous offer by you someone just felt the right to request you grow and then harvest the seeds for them?
 
Mate dont feel selfish, You are one of the most generous people that I know and my season would not have been anywhere near as great without your generosity.
And while I am at it,Patrick, Thanks so much for all of you kind thoughts and prayers and all of the endless emails of encouragement that I have had from you.
You have sent me seeds and powders at the drop of a hat without asking anything in return and I thank you for that.
Honestly mate you have made these last 6 months of chemotherapy so much more bearable. I have looked forward to your emails.
There it is public, but once again I mean it when I say that you have nothing to feel selfish about.
Mate you a legend.
P.S. there are lots of other kind and generous people on this forum and others too and thankyou to you too, you know who you are.
Funny how this chilli growing thing brings folks together.
 
You are not selfish at all. People should realize there is a reason for the membership and the fees, and the whole idea of improving existing chile varieties is great and has taken a lot of work by Luigi and other members of AISPES. If outside members had access to all these works in progress then there would be no real point in having this great association.
 
If odd requests like that come unsolicited charge a PATRICK annual membership to help offset your generous help to those you reach out to. I have seen many a thread regarding someone's search for something or loss of something and you step up. Unless said membership with them includes an agreement saying you are to be a random seedbank then I wouldn't feel selfish if I were you.
 
i have been a member of AISPES . most of the seeds they sent me i had have them befor from the project director my friend Claudio. its avery good website and amazing forum . www.PepperFriends.com many of THP forum are also members there. Chris ...and others
 
I would have told that person to "go pound sand"....

I, also retired and living on a fixed income try to be as kind as I can with seeds, but I have to take care of ME and seeds don't come cheap...even if you grow them yourself...

The one biggest thing that irks me is for a newcomer to the website request free seeds in his/her first post...I had someone on a list that became a new member here and wanted some seeds...I told them that after the season I would send them some...that person has not been active on the forum since I started harvesting...

Thats happened a hundred times to me AJ, and thats why I'm not as generous as I once was with newbies. Whats worse is when you give out rare seeds and find them being sold on E-bay or other seller's sites, and this happens a lot :(

Yep that's exactly how it went.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I was right that bringing it up got it out of my head. It's obvious I'm not alone and it's a sore point with many of us.

This place is loaded with generous and helpful folks. I appreciate all the helpful info and stuff I've recieved some free and some for a nominal fee for folks trouble and time. Thanks :cheers:
 
I am always shocked to see people join and their first post is "SEND ME SEEDS" - - - no manners whatsoever. It would never even occur to me to behave like that, and I find it offensive on behalf of you others, even though no one's going to demand seeds from my few plants. (haha - who's going to ask for cayenne or jalapeno seeds?) So no, Patrick, I don't find you or anyone else on this site as selfish - don't put someone else's bad behavior onto yourself!

I can't believe you all are being sooooooo selfish. You should all send me all of your seeds right now. No more growing for any of you. Especially you Patrick. I cannot say how many times I have gotten seeds from you but now, ooooo man. And AJ and Potawie, some of the best damn growers on here. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.


















I hope at least someone takes that seriously because I was laughing while typing it.
 
I've got similar private messages. It's really irritating when people with no posts only ask for the rare seeds. Thanks for posting this although I really doubt the people doing this will read it.

Nah, I dont think you're being selfish. They are YOUR seeds, right? If you choose to sell them, people can either accept that and pay for the seeds, or NOT buy the seeds and move on.
When someone that has just a couple of posts asks me for seeds, I ask them what they have to trade. IF I am feeling generous, I still MIGHT send them seeds. MIGHT. I have such a bad memory anyways that if I tell them I will, I probably wont anyways. lol
I hear ya AJ. That sucks in life. But its like relationships...you cant meet a girl and not get serious with a wonderful person just because someone ELSE burned you, you know? Its not to say that you SHOULD do anything you dont want to do. I have been burned by TONS of people in the past. As an example, just because geeme burned me doesnt mean I should hold that against YOU, ya know? But I can see where people would feel that way.
 
I don't know anyone would pm anyone for seeds that weren't offered when there are so many generous people on the site who offer seeds all for a sase or sasbe. It's crazy!:woohoo:
