Nutrient Deficiency?

I think I have a Copper deficiency, please take a look at the photos and let me know what you think. I have just (yesterday and today) given the plants some fertilizer with micros including chelated Cu (Cu-EDTA). Note regarding the soil, clay-loam that has been amended with compost and covered with mulch. The symptoms have been evident for the last 3-4 days. In addition we have had a torrent of rain lately, over 5" in the last week and it has been hot every day for the last few weeks. About 95% of my 160+ plants are showing this symptom. Take a particular look at the last photo and the central vein which looks like a meandering river. I suppose it could be biotic...virus or nematode but I did not have this problem last year and I have rotated the crop. HELP!

OUCH.
almost looks like fert burn/under fert, with slugs, or rain damage. hope the chelated helps them out. what varieties are you growing if you don't mind me asking? is the soil too compcted maybe? hope all works out for ya plants that would be a tremendous loss

About 45 different varieties of C. annuum, frutescens, chinense, and baccatum. Hab-red, white, orange, red caribbena, chocolate, mustard, and yellow; Bhut, Chocolate Bhut, Naga Morich, Jamaican Hot Choc., Martinique, Bonda ma Jacques, serrano, tobasco, peter pepper, Scotch Bonnet-red and yellow, 7-pod, red cap mush, squash, Naga PC-1, Aji Lemon, Numex Bailey, Devils Tongue, Tobago, Fatalii, Congo Trinidad, Cajamarca, several unknow varieties which volunteered themselves in the plot I used last year, and several accessions of baccatum, frutescens and chinense that I obtained from the USDA germplasm resource out of Griffin Georgia. I do not think that it is over fert as I have only fertilized minimally and only in the last 2 days, I am hoping that it is the rain. It might be beet curly top virus, as this causes the rolling of the young leaves, but I have this even in the peppers that I have in pots and I am just seeing it so if it were present in the seeds then I would have seen symptoms early. I hope it was the rain.

That looks exactly like the bug problem I'm having TMP. Specially the holes in the leaves. That's where the bugs have been chewing. So far I haven't been able to find any bug but opinions around here suggest some type of mite. If you do find a cure please let me know and I'll do the same. Good luck!

I got to looking that last photo over and it appears I may have found the culprit that is eating the lines and holes in the leaves. If you'll look at the last photo far left leaf about 3/4's of the way up from the bottom of the stem you can see a small white grub or caterpillar looking bug. Looks like the head is black and if you look close you can see damage to the leaf right where it's head is at. I took the liberty of zooming that spot up to get a better look, I hope you don't mind TMP. Anybody have a clue as to what this is?

You're breaking my heart gatorman. I thought I had something there. You're right, I guess I was seeing what I wanted to see. Thanks for pointing it out.

On a happier note another member started a thread with what appears to be the same type of damage and it's been determined hers is being caused by slugs. Gives me hope. You getting this TMP? I was going to use Diatomaceous earth but it's effectiveness diminishes in a humid environment. May have to go to plan B.

Sorry about that Patrick...I hold you in the highest regard, but I'm glad you seem to have figured out what the problem your facing is.

Thought I'd contribute my woes to this thread. It seems I'm having the same problem.

Do these symptoms look familiar? I too have slug problems, but I was under the impression that my plants got these symptoms from contact with herbicide, since the lawn was sprayed near where I was hardening my seedlings off. Nearly all of them had the symptom on new growth. Now the newer growth on some of them seems to be back to normal.

No apology necessary Maligator and thank you for the kind words.

orangehero I don't see the same leaf damage that is evident on my and TMP's leaves. I'm referring to the holes and cutouts that are on TMP's leaves that look exactly like mine. I do see that seriously wiggly main vein going down the middle of one of your leaves that is similar to TMP's. I wonder if he got hit with some herbicide?

I have holes in leaves as well. From what I can tell it's definitely slugs and perhaps colorado beetles. I have found slugs on my peppers, but the colorado beetles are definitely on my eggplants, and the damage looks similar. The beetles are voracious, though.

What did you do for your slugs, Patrick?

That is interesting, we live not far from some soybean and corn fields, I wonder if the fields were sprayed on a windy day and I got hit with some drift. On the other hand, none of my other plants seem to be affected. Orangehero, have you had a lot of heavy rain lately?

Finally, if this is slugs I do I confirm this (sounds stupid...just look for slugs I guess)? Will they be in the soil and the roots or on the shoots or leaves.

Thanks to all who have provided insight.

Didn't you write, 95% of your plants have the symptom?

No heavy rain. Mine got the symptoms while in cups, though. Once I planted in the dirt, the new growth is back to normal.

Slugs love rain. Look for slugs in the late evening, early morning. Look in the area around the plants and on the plants. They will also usually leave slime trails.

If you have been talking about the holes in your leaves, I'm pretty certain that that is physical damage from pests. If a disease or nutrient problem leads to holes, it doesn't make crisp holes like that.

Did these peppers come out of it?

My last post was unclear, my other plants = ornamental, tomato, lettuce, all but the majority of the peppers.

I got hit by a neighbor spraying herbicides along the fence this year with my Fatalii and all habaneros getting hit the hardest. This was strange because they were all mixed together and certain varieties all showed the same symptoms. Good new is that they all are growing normal new growth and healthy plants, took a little longer to hit their growth spurt but all have caught up nicely. Don't know for sure what causes it but many have similiar claims of weedkillers, they'll recover.

Thanks for the post PRF, I sure hope that they do recover. I am very concerned. I went out and looked with a flashlight and did not see any signs of slugs. Some of the plants appear to be doing better, but others worse. It is a waiting game now. Thanks for all your help, hopefully I'll be able to post some recovery-alls-well pics later.

Here's a link I found on slugs that offers many ways to dispose of them. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weekendgardener.net%2Fhow-to%2Fsnails-slugs.htm&rct=j&q=how+to+kill+slugs&ei=_TYgTJH_MMH78AbXiaGcAQ&usg=AFQjCNFCW-B-MH21TkaozALOWHDK58Vgnw After reading through it I'm going to try the iron phosphate bait. For now I've put crushed egg shells and perlite around the base of the plants to try and keep the SOB's off of them. I'm going to head out a little later and see if I can catch one or two. I just need to see the bastards once.

Good luck guys.
