PaulG 2012

I'm chomping at the bit to get started with some new chilli varieties this coming Spring. So far I've just scratched the surface with Poblanos, Jalapenos and Serranos, all of which I really like. I've been egged on by a new Second Generation Mejicano neighbor as we've talked about hot chillis over the back fence! He helped me make some Pico de Gallo with my Serranos and Early Girl tomatoes and has some great recipes from his mother and grandmother. Hopefully I'll be able to share some of them on this forum in the future. I need to grow more Cilantro. Oh yeah!

I've ordered seed from several sources which received at least a few good comments on this forum (6/12 - items crossed out did not germ, or weren't planted this year):

US Hot Stuff:
Bolivian Rainbow
Yellow Peter
Nosegay
Trinidad Scorpion (from Spankycolts)
Devil Tongue

The Hippy Seed Company: Seed Packet Mixes
NuMex Twilight (from Siliman)
Yellow Jellybeans
Tom Thumbs
Wild Texas Tepin

Refining Fire: Seed Packet Mix
Scotch Bonnet
Chocolate Habanero
Jamaican Red Mushroom

New Mexico State University:
Chiltepin
Omnicolor
Red Carribean Habanero
Orange Habanero

Pepper Gal:
Aji Yellow (request from a Peruvian friend of ours!)
Thai Hot

Peppermania:
Inca Lost
Fatali
White Habanero (from Spanky)
Red Savina (cross with Fatali, from Spanky)
Bishop's Crown
Inca Red Drop
Orange Rocoto
Congo Trinidad

I doubt I will be able to try all of these out this year, but I have saved my seeds in small glass jars with tight-fitting lids for storage over the next year. I have been saving seed from other garden produce and have had good luck with germinating them after two or even three years. The jars are stored in boxes in the garage for a cool dark location for them. I have ordered several compact varieties with an eye toward trying to winter over some of my plants this year. Since I didn't even know peppers were perennial, I can say I've already learned something from this forum!

I purchased a small greenhouse from One Stop Gardens (via Harbor Freight) for $300 four years ago. This is one of the greenhouse kits I've noticed in the greenhouse advertsing bar at the bottom of some of the pages on this forum. This picture is from Spring/ Summer 2011. You can see my tomato and pepper starts on the sheves. I winter over some bonsai trees and jade plants as well as geraniums, begonias and Gerbera Daisies. In the winter, I use a small space heater (visible on ground in the picture) to keep the temp at 40F during the few cold weeks we experience here. So far it has worked pretty well. If overwintering pepper plants becomes a reality I'll be making more room in the greenhouse! I've started a thread in the Grow Tech forum to discuss issues which crop up with these units.

January 14, 2012:

Composting:

Okay, I need to do something outside. I know, I'll dig out a compost bin. We've had a little dry cool weather, so the worms have burrowed down, and the compost is crumbly, if a tad wet.

DSCN3318sm.jpg

The first step - dig out the bin and sift the material. I use a homemade frame with a layer of 1/4 inch plastic hardware cloth backed with a layer of one inch mesh poultry netting. The fine stuff goes into the wheelbarrow, the coarse stuff into an adjacent compost bin we're still building up.

DSCN3316sm.jpg

The bin on the left is covered to keep the leafy material dry and fluffy. The dry leaves are an important layer in the compost 'cake'. The bin on the right is the one I'm digging out. Nice, dark and crumbly with lots of worms! The sifter is on the wheelbarrow, and some of the coarse stuff is already on the active compost bin in the middle. The bin in the back is resting for several of months. It has a black plastic hardware cloth cover to keep out squirrels and racoons.

DSCN3321sm.jpg

The bin is all dug out. I left about two inches of broken up compost on the bottom of the hole to create a space for the worms to move into. You can see the bin in the middle has a layer of coarse stuff spread out on the top.

DSCN3323sm.jpg

The last step is to put a nice deep layer of dry leaves on the bin we just dug out. Now that bin will rest for a at least several months or more while the earthworms move into the compost/earth interface and do their work. That will make a great base for the next cycle of composting in this bin. I put a thin layer of leaves on the middle bin, too. Now there's a nice layer cake of dirt/compost, leaves. kitchen scraps. All small yard clippings except grass go into the compost bins, even tomato vines and pepper branches and twigs. I don't even chop stuff up too much. I try to have at least 10 or 12 layers of stuff built up before I cover the bin with a layer of dirt/compost and let the worms work for several months. I'm getting about 12-18 cubic feet of compost from these bins a year. My goal is to become 'soil self-sufficient' at some point, perhaps only having to procure horticultural pumice or vermiculite and some peat moss every so often.

DSCN3322sm.jpg

The good stuff. It will go into a plastic, vented storage bin for at lest eight weeks to cure a bit. Then I mix it with a little peat moss and some vermiculite or pumice for aeration. In my large containers, I add 2 or 3 inches of compost worked into the top of the container only every year. I try not to mix up the soil layers in the big containers very much, letting the nutrients percolate down through the soil as in a natural setting. As the blog continues this summer, I'll include photos of the irrigation system and containers I use to grow my tomatoes and peppers, and a few other things.

Alright Paul it took all morning but I finally made to the last page! WOW! I planted the explosive embers in also, not knowing what it was. Now that I've seen yours I'm not disappointed. Its got nice coloring to it. Keep up the good work man
Aaron

Geez, Aaron, I'm sorry you had to wade through all that glogginess  , but thanks
for viewing!
I think you won't be disappointed with the EE's. I also have the Bolivian Rainbow
and Black Pearl, which are very similar in coloring, although the BP and BR branch
like a typical annuum. The contrast of new green leaves with older purples is way
cool for sure!

Am getting antsy to pot up!

How Not To Clone

I have here the perfect examples of what happens to clones when you:
fry them repeatedly with too high temps
forget to mist them for a whole day
drown them in a rescue attempt
forget where they are for just a minute : )
Yellow Aji in back, Bishop's Crown, left, Serrano, right:
DSCN4007a.jpg

I'm going to turn in my clone hat. JK - these things happen    :violin:

How about a pic of the Wilds family to cheer me up? Three Wild Texas Tepins
on the left, three Chiltepins on the right; Germinated plants in back, 2 clones
red cups. The Tepin clone seems a little wan; the two bushy Chiltepins are the
result of pinching:
DSCN4010a.jpg

The Baccatum family next; Inca Red Drops on the left, two OmniColor
on the right, clones in cups. Both tall plants producing buds:
DSCN4012a.jpg

I have been cutting a lot of buds off the plants lately. Sometimes hard to
get at them, but as soon as they show a stem, I snip them. The Bishop's
Crowns and Yellow Ajis have not started to bud, yet.

A while back I showed an Early Jalapeno that had curling leaves. It was
the only plant on the grow table to be showing that. Today as I was inspecting
the plants, I picked it up and skootched the soil around with my finger, and 3 or
4 fungus gnats flew up. Ballz! As I said it's the only plant, and I have been
watching like a hawk. So, I have removed it from the grow table and put it in
the greenhouse after a good appplication of Neem to the surface of the soil.
I normally don't like to apply neem to the soil, but this is war! Hopefully it will
curb the larvae's appetite:

Thanks for looking in. Good evening to all

Sorry to hear about the clones Paul but things like that happen and if my ADD is kickin me good I can forget or miss-place with the best of them. This last week for me was in believing the weather wasn't going to turn wrt. I decided to leave the tray tops off and it rained the next morning. Think I may have lost a whole tray of 36. I'm going to give it a week and see if anything comes back then cut my losses and replant them. I'll be offering up a prayer that we might not have too many more of these happenings this year.

Rest of them look great!

I'm pretty philosophical about it. Two were just kind of an after thought and I just didn't take good care of them. One must stay vigilant : ) Now, your story is a real drag! Hoping that you get a little bit of a miracle there! Looks like the only thing you can count on any more is unpredictable weather!

Thanks for stopping in, RM!

BALLZ!! Yea take those Gnats out now before they kill your plants and just annoy you in general.... I had them last year in some house plants. they ended up getting in the food pantry and man it was just annoying as all hell. Shame about the clones but your other clones still look good enough for you to retain your title!

Last time i read your Glog Paul (page before) you was the 'clone master' now your a 'toastmaster' such a shame.

Did you manage to save some of them?

Mezo.

Thanks, Britt! Even if the title is a bit tarnished : ) Yeah, dang bugs. I don't mind if they eat a hole in a leaf or nibble on the edge. I mean, they were here before me. But, if they start going for new growth or fruit, it's no holds barred!

Enjoy the rest of the week, weekend is coming!

Hey, Mezo, thanks for dropping in. All the older clones are just fine, lookin' good and growing like crazy for the most part. The two in the smaller containers were the result of pinching too-tall plants, and I just cloned them as an afterthought. The little Aji in the big container was one of the originals, and for some reason, just got hammered too many times to pull out of it.

Take care, mate!

Toastmaster :D

nice work...

Thank you, kind sir!
Keep growing peppers like a maniac, Conrad!

Aji seed update:

I may have redeemed my reputation just a tad

I checked the Aji/Rocoto seed germination cups today after adding water and some heat protection between the cups and the heat source (a shop light) yesterday. The Aji with the brown root still looks toasted, but...
DSCN4013a.jpg

I see 7 out of 9 germinated, counting the toasted one at the bottom. Possibly 8 if the one on the right
pops - looks like a tiny protrusion on the upper left point! I'd say we now know that not only are they
viable, but with proper handling will germinate at a high rate! I'll put these in some cells with dirt later
on today, and put them in the 'germination chamber' for a few days and see how they hook. No action
in the Rocoto cup, yet.

Here's a shot of the 'germination cup station' - reasonably ghetto, I'd say : ) Hard to
measure temp, but the two layers of paper towel seem to be the right amount of
insulation from the shop light transformer heat source:
DSCN4014a.jpg

This is where the Aji seeds will spend the next few days, on top of my grow table lights. Unfortunately my reflective blanket draped over the lights holds in a bit too much heat. Soil temp, 78F. The 3x3 cell trays with Aji/Rocoto seeds in dirt are also in this compartment:
DSCN3990a.jpg

Thanks for checking in :P Have a great day and good luck with your own grow!

looking good Paul, I just stopped by to say WOW, 13,000 views and we're not even outdoors yet?.............congrats

Greg

Just how many times are you going to change the title in this thread Paul, i wake up every morning & its changed. :D

Thanks, Greg ;) Good of you to drop by. Shane is leaving me in the dust

Blame Shane - he's the one who told me how to do it after I spent a month trying to figure it out
Thanks, for dropping in, Meez!

Heck, just keep them clone corpses around as "see what happens when slack on the G" examples....
The rest of the gang is all lookin spry and ready to hit the dirt when the day comes.
I'm not having much patience with my boat grow kids, been over 9 days and not a sprout to be seen...temps 87-90......hmmm.Even excavated a seed or 2
not even a cracked helmet yet....might have rinse some and go to cups and paper towels. These were gonna be back ups for the troops left to fend for them selves at home-who are apparently still holding out to a plant.

Good advice, Dave! Slack is a bad thing.
later edit, addition: I have placed them in a spot where all the peppers can see them. I'm still misting them just in case there is a live cell in their bodies. But the rest of the peppers will take note, I'm sure!
Sometimes I just think the seeds have their own schedule : )
The rinsing and insertion into cups sounds like a good plan.
Maybe a little change of scenery will wake them up!
Good luck - hope they pop soon for you.

Hey, Fernando! Seems like you always have something new going in!
What exactly is a tomatillo and what do you use them for? I know what
they look like, but have never eaten one to my knowledge.

Tomatillo are great in flavor we normally use the green ones, since they are easy to get here at our local grocery stores I decided to grow the purple version. They go great with anything I am not sure about eating them raw never tried that, but I decided to grow them this year because a sauce I wanted to make with them and help keep that purple contrast. I currently have it outside now as it is flowering like crazy I finally decided to move it outside once the crazy weather had past so I am excited to start seeing husk start developing.

Sounds good. I'll look for more pics in your grow log!

Just a quick news flash - I peeked in the Aji dirt germination
test tray tonight and saw a hook in one of the cells. So, 1 out
of 9 so far : ) That's six days for the first hook. I'll post a pic mañana.

Later news flash - The eighth aji seed in the cup sprouted tonight, so
8/9 with the last one still a possibility!

Geez! The happy police are up early! I haven't liked anything since I went to bed 6 hours ago!!! Good news on the new little ones, try not to cut their heads off!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on those rocotos - just seems cool to have the real deal imported seeds on rocotos, and I want to see how they do...

Paul, sorry to see the clone shot but you are still the jedi clone master in my eyes but .The Wilds look superb. Love the gernmination shots as well!

Yeah, what's upwith that? Have they reduced the number of allowed positivity encounters? I've been getting that message every day. would be cool if there was posted somewhere how many pics, emoticons, likes etc. one can use so after an hour of crafting a page you don't have a stupid overload warning.

Speaking of warnings, how come my post profiles say "0 warning points"? No one else has it. Cripes, I feel like I'm in some kind of Kafka novel. Have i tried to upload too many pics? Have I offended some anonymous snich? Punishment for toasting three clones? Not positive enough? I need an answer!

Ouch! That hurt :D

 That's funny because just yesterday I noticed that I had the same thing. I think it must be something you only see on your own profile. And it's also funny because even though it said "0" warning points, which should mean "Hey, you've done nothing wrong," it still made me very paranoid. Like, "You've done nothing wrong... yet... but I'm watching..."
