PaulG 2019

No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Thanks for the good vibes. I hold my breath 'til it's over  ;)

Hope your season is bonkers, as well!

I have a few seedlings struggling as well with helmet heads...I keep seeing you guys getting them of with alot of success but I am terrified to try it myself, might have to let nature sort it out on its own.
They can do it, Matty, but the cost is dear in
terms of the reserves designed to get them
off to a good start.

You know..I have a feeling someone is going to try and twist this 3rd eye thing on us.......

Pics Paul, waiting anxiously

Dude! I posted yesterday
Man, this is a tough audience!

Not much going on at the moment that
is pic worthy. Soon, soon, amigo   :D

Replacement Round is history, so a good time for
a summary of the season's germination so far by
way of records-keeping. The 'Log' part of 'Grow
Log'   :D  I guess.

First, the 'Fails' (varieties that
did not germinate a seed):

    BOC 2018 - 0/2
   Yellow 7 2013 - 0/4
   Congo Trinidad Red 2013 - 0/1
   PdN x BMJ F1 2013 - 0/1
   Tezpur Naga 2016 - 0/4
   Chili Costa Rica 2015 - 0/4
   Peach Ghost Scorpion 2017 - 0/2
   SB Schneider Farms 2016 - 0/4

Two seedlings succumbed to heat stroke:

'Funky' Reaper 2014 - only seedling
Fatali 2017 - one seedling left

Plants in beverage cups - will go into
2-liter pots at transplant time:

   2 - Yellow BrainStrain 2018 - 4/4
   4 - Scorpion 2017 - 9/12
   1 - Fatali 2017 - 4/4
   1 - BOC Red 2017 - 3/3
   2 - SB MoA 2017 - 3/4
   4 - JA Red Habanero - 7/8
   1 - F7W Bhuter 2018 - 2/2
   1 - F7 Violet Double Pod 2018 - 3/3
   2 - Bhut Jolokia Chocolate 2017 - 3/5
   1 - 7 Pot Burgundy Red 2014 - 1/2
   1 - 7 Pot Burgundy Pecan 2016 - 2/3
   2 - Red Rocoto 2017 - 4/4
   2 - Aji Amarillo 2017 - 4/4 - #1 pots

F7 PdN x BMJ grow:
   4 - F7W 2018, #3 pots
   2 - F5W 2018, #2 pots

Plants in RockWool - will go into 2-liter planters
if the root systems develop enough by trans-
plant time:

   1 - Piquin 2014 - 3/3
   1 - Bhut Jolokia Hybrid 2016 - 3/3
   1 - SB7J 2017 - 2/3
   2 - SB Beth Boyd 2016 - 4/5
   2 - SB TFM 2015 - 3/5

Some observations:
  • Round One germination 80% (varieties that germinated),
  •                                         69% (including varieties that did not germinate)
  •
  • Replacement Round germ. 75% (var. that germinated)
  •                                             36% ( incl. non-germinators)
  •
  • Round One - All but two varieties of seed from 2017 and 2018.
  •
  • Replacement Round - Three from 2017, all the rest older seeds.
Newer seeds usually perform better.
   2013 - 0/3
   2014 - 4/4 - not bad!
   2015 - 1/2
   2016 - 3/5
   2017 - 8/9
   2018 - 3/4
Based on this ridiculously small sample, I think
I'll not plant seed more than 4 years old. So, in
2020 no seed older than 2016.

Of the 30 seedlings in cups and RockWool,
I need to give away about 5-10    There
may be more natural attrition, of course.

I wouldn't have room for 91 plants  ;)

Sorry to read that poor Schneider failed but glad the other bonnets pushed through .... your well on your way Paul
Thanks, John. My luck with bonnets has been
average here in PNW. I don't know why. But I'm
going to keep trying until I find a variety that
does well for me in my own local. One Beth Boyd
and one TFM have radicles, but have seemed to
have seemed stop in their tracks.  Will have to
keep an eye on these two.

Thanks for being willing to share the bonnet
love, my friend!

My pleasure. ;)

Ah, to have room for 91 plants. That... still wouldn't put us even vaguely close to some of the people here...

Really sucks that some of those didn't germinate at all, but it looks like you'll still have a good variety of viable plants. I think this kind of thing is a good reminder to those of us with small spaces and seed banks (well, more like piggy banks) that cycling your grow is important if you don't want to lose varieties altogether.

So Paul...how would one go aboot removing those pesky helmet heads??    I have one pot that all 3 seeds that germ'd all have HH's. None of the 3 look like they are in good shape at all.... :banghead: :banghead:
How I remove the HH is I take my fingertips and lightly press the seed corners so it becomes less flat and more round. Then I take my finger nails and slowly break the seed shell, the small seed sack inside I use tweezers to remove. Best of luck brotha, if that dont work you can always try this :flamethrower:

OK..well I think I saved a couple of them...lost a couple though as well but for sure a few were already toast I don't think it matterwhat I did. I need to be alot more proactive doing this..

So I took what you said and then watched a couple youtube vids and just went at it....something thats gonna take some practice to get good at for sure.

Just trim 1/32 of an inch off around the edge of the seed then open it like a clamshell.

And gpr, I sure hope I wind up with more than 200! My strategy is just put a shit ton of seeds on paper towels, then whatever sprouts gets 5-6 put in some soil, and (maybe) weed some out by plant out. I will probably do a long row at the in-laws house this year too, Where I try to stick plants I don't want to throw away lol
