PaulG 2019

No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

I have zero experience with hydroponics.
That's me, my friend. I know just enough
to be dangerous   ;)

Sounds like you have at least a knowledge
base to scale down. Unless you are like me
and can't remember!

Hope you are havin' fun this season!

Ahem

Same here. I have a whole bunch of those things growing nice roots. They're still in those test tubes getting pale. I guess the next time I change the water I should give them some stronger food. Or maybe I should just plant them in some dirt

You need to change water more frequently if there is no bubbler due to oxygen issues, nutes should be added when plants show deficiencies. Usually a food around the 5/6/7s or opposite work well, best practice for least shock is to plant them with 70% of roots in moist soil and a couple in a double cup setup with nutes. I use clear cups and you can see the roots go wild, the plants usually grow really fast and then its full soil.

I'm going to ask the guys at the hydro/garden store tomorrow.
The plants will go into soil, eventually.
Suggestion is to have ph up/down and good nute (a lot of people like dynagrow)
Last grow I really got everything dialed in nicely thru trial and error of course :fire: :metal: :fire:

I suggest a DWC setup for those cuttings. They sell bubble buckets for a reasonable price, but you could make something just as good with some plastic totes, a hole saw, net pots, air pump and air stones. Its like a larger version of your aerogarden. I like general hydroponics nutes. I have grown some MONSTER plants in the 5 gallon root spa setup from amazon. Otherwise, just go ahead and throw them in some soil now they'll do fine. Thinking I may grow a couple of my Big Jims indoors with a DWC setup with LED's this season to see how they do compared to my outdoor plants???  Always gotta fiddle ya'know. ;)

I assumed he meant double-cup with 30% of the roots extending through the bottom of the cup to do the work while the 70% in the soil adjusted, then transplant again later to 100% soil, but wasn't sure either. Would be hard to do when they're really small.  I recently transplanted a somewhat larger pepper from kratky to soil and it suffered a big setback. I like the DWC idea a lot, but it's probably more than I want to take on at the moment. I have 2 of these little guys right now I'm looking to step into soil. Probably just going to stuff them into it while they're still pretty young and hope for the best.

It's not clear to me what you mean here, GPR.
When you go to plant in soil use double cup method and let 2-3 roots down the center hole of cup 1 and into the nutes of cup 2. I took pics that never were uploaded so I will look so you see what I mean.
I use clear cups so that you see the roots go into the soil, kinda exciting lol

How small we talking bud? Mine were maybe 4-5 sets of leaves, roots were like 8-10 long so a 12 oz cup works

Time for some pics.
Images taken yesterday, 1/28.

The BJ Hybrid are starting to show the purple.
One is darker than the other. I'll probably grow
the 'purple-er' one:

The RockWool seedlings. 6-8 days
since hooks as of this picture:

Made a jar for one of the Aji rootings.
Gave the other to my neighbor.  Don't
know what I'll eventually do with it. I
already have two for plant-out:

I cut off all the yellow foliage after this pic:

These roots popped over night. I'm using
Shultz Instant for now:

Just sort of a fun experiment for the time being.

Hope everybody is healthy and happy.
  Good growin' to all!

This taken yesterday. Unusual to see three leaves
come out all at once on a tri-Cotyledon seedling in
my grow this season.

All the others have just put out one leaf at a time
from the get-go. Red Bhut Jolokia:

Then, this morning, a second BJ Red hooked. Very
weak and puny, germinating at 35 days. Euthanized.:

Decided to remove the less purple seedling from the
BJ Hybrid cube and root it. Managed to reach in and
snip the stem below the crown with a little piece of
root attached. Partly to grow out as a comparison to
the more purple one, as well as an insurance policy on it:

This for the record. Easier than making a list
Twenty-four plants and seedlings going forward:

Have lost a few due to one thing and another. Mostly SDS
caused by not being careful enough varieties MIA-
SB FTM, Fatali, Peach Reaper, Red 7 Pot Burgundy.

Lookin good Paul, 35 days to germinate is nuts though. Keep em growing buddy and keep warm :flamethrower:We've had three days of bright sunshine in the low 50's with nights at freezing or just below. Back to snow, maybe on Sunday, then to good ol' Portland rain...
I know, GPR, that is crazy

I noticed that the really long germination times
produce seedlings that are tiny and weak.  Sometimes
one surprises me, but it takes forever for some of them
to take root and get going.  Although I will have to admit
that a couple of my long-timers are doing really well.

I think in the future, I will limit my seeds to four years
old or newer, and stop germinating after 18-20 days.

I agree, although I do have 2 plants are my monsters and both took weeks and seedlings were runts. Just depends on nutes, soil and treatment of plants I guess

Coming along nicely Paul, what are you using to get the root growing so fast?
Thanks, James. I just use a little Shultz Instant
fertilizer (10-15-10) because it's what I have
from the house plant days. It's probably not the
best, but this is just sort of fooling around.

Good luck to your this season, my friend!
