PeriPeri's Grow Log 2012: South Africa

Hi All,

So I'll give it another try this year. God knows I love chillies and I would love nothing more than to have a bumper harvest... but I suspect the truth of the matter is I do not have green fingers. In fact, give me a chilli and I will be pretty guaranteed to kill it lol That's not negativity talking, that's reality based on last years experiences lol

Last year it was pots. This year its a farm east of Pretoria, here in South Africa. My reasoning for this madness is pretty much like a hunter hunting with a machine gun... out of the thousand seedlings I plant... I must walk away with something lol (I hope).

So I have a pice of land. Good soil down by a river in the african sun.

The planting area has been divided into two sections. An enclosed area (±40mx40m) with shade netting and an open area (±40mx40m). Water is limited, but there is borehole water.

Outside Area:

Inside Area:

Temps this time of the year are in the mid to high 30ºC. It's the rainy season, so there is rain and it comes in buckets and hail-stones!

So here are the pics I took of the inside and outside areas Saturday 6/10/2012. It was 37ºC that day. I have a video as well which I took last Sunday when I started the planting (to come). Luckily we have a cold front at the moment, so since monday it has been overcast, cool and we have rain (magic). I think its about 23/25ºC at the moment. I planted on Sunday (36ºC) early morning (24/25ºC) and late afternoon and pretty much watered for the rest of the day. Didn't look like rain at all... but it's here and could not have come at a better time really!

As you can see I have laid out the beds in rows. Planting is at 45-60cm intervals. I am doing a little experiment also with double planting and single planting. I suspect the yield will be lower with the bushes that have been double planted... but who knows. A different climate... maybe results will show different.

Thanks HAJ!

Now this was just beautiful... the first Fatalii... what a beauty! And I had it... it was sooo amazing. Very Hot, perfume, citrus, banana/toffee flavours.... oooh, this has got to be one of the best for me ;)

Cayennes changing colour fast. Great flavour thes

IMG_2339.jpg

Still waiting for that brown to show...

IMG_2341.jpg

The mystery chilli. This is an absolute ripper. Tried the first pod and it was unbelievably hot. Gave be that ButchT like ulcerated stinging around the tongue... but the flavour was great!

I have left one ripe pod on the plant this week to see if it will turn from orange to red.

:drooling:

Never heard of nagalah before but they look badass. Have you tried them yet?
Hi Flamecycle. Thanks for stopping in! I have tried a Douglah and several Naga's... a Nagalah is a hybrid between the two. Good combination, one of the very hot pods out there :)

7 Pods

As for this badass baddy... the two Reapers I have growing are just going podding crazy... more and more pods all the time lol

Might need a bump again please guys :)

This is supposed to be an Antillaise Carribean... but it looks a little odd to me...?

IMG_2369.jpg

IMG_2371.jpg

My trusted little friend... Ignite... I wonder if these little pods will turn red?

IMG_2372.jpg

Every time I go, I have a red Cherry Bomb... always puts a smile on my face. I really like these!

IMG_2373.jpg

Red Fatalii... still looking green lol

IMG_2378.jpg

IMG_2377.jpg

These Black Pearl/Princes are really quite fiery.

IMG_2379.jpg

A bit more like it I think... these look more like Antilaise Carribean...

IMG_2381.jpg

Very nice pods indeed! Looks like the sun is really shining bright over there
Hey meatfreak... sure is. We're going into autumn now. Things are a little cooler at 32/35ºC... but that sun is vicious. I make sure to wear a hat... but it's humid too... so you sweat like a pig... got to drink lots!

Cheyenne... these little guys amaze me. Good growers, nice little pods. But these are dwarf chillies. Plants are small... but bear these relatively large pods. Looks a little odd at times.

IMG_2385.jpg

The Phuli Jyoti is an Indian chilli. Bearing loads of stringy little pods. Got a really nice burn to them.

IMG_2386.jpg

OMG... I'm seeing little pods in bottom right hand corner of the Phuli Jyoti pic.... I have no idea what those are? Never knew there was another plant hiding there lol

This is the inside view of the mystery chilli... could it be a cross Bhut/ButchT?

Ooops need a Bump please!

Anyone for a bump please :)

Thanks mx5inpa!

Naga Morich with more ripe pods... pic blurry again (sorry)

IMG_2316.jpg

I'm at war with the monkeys. They have started taking an interest in the chillies outside. Inside chillies are secure from the monkeys. I don't think they will eat the hot varieties... but the little monkeys are trying them by taking a bite and then moving on. Unfortunately, once they have bitten into the chillies they just rot as water gets inside the pod. Also, they are coming into the outside field and just pushing plants over to get at all the pods. Nothing much I can do right now except keep staking the plants they push over. Loosing quite a few pods this way unfortunately. I hope they realise there is nothing they like there and will eventually stop trying to eat the chillies.

I found this untouched Calapeno Wonder and had to pick it... loving these!

Still quite a few tail enders coming through the ranks.

Another Bump please guys :)

Little bit of confusion here. Could be a Scotch Bonnet Peach Long or a ButchT X Moruga.... i'll be content with either lol

IMG_2375.jpg

;) Thanks Pia - Welcome!

Jonah X ButchT - Should be interesting. Can't imagine a hybrid of two more evil plants lol

Well I think this is it for now... hope you are all enjoying the pics. iPhone is struggling with the harsh light conditions I think, so some pics are blurry... but it really is the easiest way to capture these pics.

One more thing I wanted to add... now that I am harvesting - if you are looking for a bag solution, I can highly recommend the plastic onion bag type material. It's cheap, comes on a handy roll and most importantly chillies last longest. They don't sweat or go mushy and can be washed in the bag. Its like a giant roll of fishnet material... all you have to do is cut the length you want the bag to be and tie a knot in one end. It's brilliant.

On that note that's me over and out from South Africa!

Either you’ll be selling a lot of pods over there for the next few weeks or you can kick up your feet and enjoy pods a zillion ways for the next few years :D I love the look of your Fatalii’s, might have to try and grow some of these days, never tried it. I’m not sure what the orange pod is above the “Phuli Jyoti,” but the dimple (lower right) almost looks like a worm hole into it, might want check and I could be wrong as it’s hard to tell from the pic. Hat’s off on everything & keep up dat great hard work!!! \o_

Edit1: Now I’ll be coming back drooling over all your pod pics the next several weeks ^_^ Oh and thanks, I used up my next few weeks of "like this" allotment, lol ...

Edit2: Capture the monkeys and start your version of Miami's monkey jungle ;)

Great Pod Porn there Piri, To bad you can't dust your plants with hot pepper powder, that would burn the monkey's butts for sure, Maybe you could set ups some electrical lines, as big as your grow is it will be hard to stop them from eating what ever they might want.
It would be interesting to see their reaction from eating a super hot, as bad as the monkeys are, at least they are not a herd Elephants.
Here's hoping your grow will stay safe.

Thats a crazy amount of pods. It seems like yesterday that the plants were about a ft tall. Whats the plan for the harvest.....sauces, powdering

Awesome work!
Thanks mate! I'm glad I can share my labours with you all. It feels quite isolated here in South Africa... not many people I know here that are enthusiasts or chilliheads. So it feels good to share things with people who are equally as passionate about peppers as I am :)

Hello my friend! There are a just a hew huh? lol Processing them all is proving to be quite laborious!

The Fatalii I can recommend highly! It is such a unique and amazing flavour. That colour and shape is really very remarkable!

Yea, I saw the hole. I am suspecting the fly in that picture is the suspect. There's probably a pepper maggot inside. But there are plenty more red's... so I won't panic just yet :)

Monkeys... damn monkeys. But no spanking the monkeys in my garden

Just timing Lourens... Most of us had already left for work or hadn't gotten up yet...

It's all looking just smashing, but then you knew that! Keep up the good work and taking pics. Cheers!
What - you don't live at the computer? :D Thank you Stickman, yea I gather it was the time zone thing.

Thanks wildseed57! Yea, the monkeys are a bit of an issue. I am sure they will eventually tire of the burn. It's just such a pitty they push over the plants as this can kill the entire plant. Next year I will put money in to enclose the outside area with shade netting. It is the way to go. So if I do make any money from this season I will invest in netting. Expensive here though!

PS, the farm next door has Rhino and Giraffe... but thank the JA no elephants lol Now that would be a problem!

Wow. Just, wow.
Thank you Sawyer! Stay tuned for more!

Hey Pic1. At this stage I am collecting seeds and freezing flesh. My main aim is to blend a 2013 vintage sauce from all the chillies. This will come in mild and hot. The aim is to create a sauce that will be blended from all the chillies grown that year. Much like wine vintages I guess. Every year another vintage. Every year different chillies in the blend. Not sure if that kind of thing would catch on or how one would market such a sauce, but this is the concept.
