Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

IMG_5253.jpg

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

I know what you mean Greg. I've been pondering getting em outside in a hoop house, but I just can't get myself to do it yet. Like you said, in about three weeks we should be golden. Calling for a wintery mix tonight. It's beautiful outside as I type this. Things are lookin good Greg!

Glad to see you back brother! Put a smile on my face ear to ear! Hoop frames look great and well constructed! Plants look ready for wind/snow/rain and sunshine.

"Thanks Ramon,
I hope the MoA flower leads to the "traditional" shape pod, but if not its only the 1st and we both know the flavor will be the same either way."

After the first few pods the MoA has been consistantly pumping out pods like this:

Now we know they ripen yellow

Man, doesn't it just feel good to get something outside, even if it's into Cold Frames? Just puts you that much closer to to getting them planted out. Plants are looking great Greg and don't feel bad about the 20 pounds, I have about 50 in need to loose and another 30 on top of that I'd like to loose. Started on 2200 cals per day and it's supposed to have me from 280 down to 225 by my Birthday. Then I'll put 10 back on celebrating ;)

Have a great week

Like the "Hoopala's" , great idea, even though the climate here is warmer, the earlier I can get things outside the better. Heat comes early and slows things down. Many times the peppers are just starting to produce and bam! I'ts near 100 or above. Then production stops until Sept.

Plants looking great as always, can't wait to see how things progress!

Hi Greg, I'm really lovin' those "hoophouse hardeners" you posted pics of! Did you use the vinyl sheeting that has fiberglass mesh embedded in it? If so, was that to keep the wind from tearing it? I like how you used 2x lumber as a weight on each side so it would be easy to "throw" the plastic sheeting on it over to the other side to expose the plants inside to weather during the day and to be able to get easy access to water. I may have to do something similar next year. Cheers!

Look's like you're ready for 5 rounds in the Octagon Brother! I couldn't climb the steps to enter the ring.

Those lil hoop-a-doodles or whatever y'all call them, are the grits Dude! Being able to open them from the side AND, to be able to have it "secure" while open, is even grits-er!

I really like your plants and the photos of them.

I jumped before the bump last night and messed up the sequence of photos........

Try, Try........again.

Tight quarters in the main grow room.........here's about 30 pots on the floor. 2 gal to 12 gal.

Goat's Weed reaching for lights..........get all you can Weed...cause the lights are getting shut down in 2 weeks.

One of my Bahamian Goats.........I have 4 different seed sources. I will plant all variations and then some.

"Sunrise Scorpion" pointing towards the sky.........technically the basement ceiling..........lol

First Datil pod forming.......can't wait to get a bowlful of these !

Here's one plant in a 12 gal container. It's a Yellow Jamaican Bonnet. Seeds were brought back from the North coast last June.
Steve954 has labeled them as the "Ocho Rios"................maybe they'll look like the MoA's.

Speaking of MoA's here's 2 of Steve's. Union approved.............hah, at least by me.
31 yrs in the trades.......I can tell ya those plants are going to put out some raw powder...(MoAc-Dc)

A tray of Hungarian Wax..........I'll pinch off that flower and any more that open before the plants reach a ft tall. Otherwise not only the chili's will grow down into the dirt, but the plant will slow down branch production and focus on the few hanging pods. As with all long New Mex and similar horn shaped pods , I trim all the 1st wave flowers off.

more 2 gal containers in the lower level grow

and finally the first MoA flower. This bud opened right at the fork. I hope it sticks !

Thanks for checking this out...and your comments.

Wow, plants are looking great! And you're getting stuff outside - loved the hoophouse hardening spot! Nicely done. Looking at your plants continues to make me feel like I'm behind. I misjudged my start date in combination with a cooler growing area... They're doing ok, but wow - your plants are picture perfect! I've got some Bahamian Goats going this year too - they look like really cool peppers. I'm excited to try them. Glad you were able to put the syrup to good use. I am not certain that it was as hot as the first batch I made, but hopefully it had a little kick for you.

As I watch these soldiers line up and march the only thing I can hear in my head is the USA military march patriotic song 'Marine Corps hymn'. Well done sir!
Awesome Local 134 badge! I have just applied and taken the aptitude test to get in Local 728. I would also like to be Union approved! Will know in 2 weeks.
Excited to see some of your Ocho Rios bonnets! Can't wait to make some Ministry of Alternating current/Direct current powder!

"The Ugly, the Bad, and the Good".......that's the forecast, not the movie. I starting to move the all tomatoes out this weekend and some more peppers.

Hopefully by the weekend of the 11th I'll have everything outdoors. Ha...I'm still hesitant, last year the day I finished getting it all out there was rain in the forecast.....good right ?Not if it's an unexpected hailstorm........hah. Looking forward to the coming weeks 70 deg forecast.

Atta boy Greg!!! I knew you were busy in the background pushing forward your pepper army! Cold frames look nice as do the plants...not looking too bad yourself! I could use to lose about 20lbs myself...best part of losing it, is working to find it again!
The peppers are on a mission to glory !......and the stock pot, dehydrator, woozies... things like that.

I should lose a few #'s before the next vacation, or I may have to buy some new clothes.........hmm

Hey Steve,I see a ripe pod there, let that get to the point of pliable before harvesting......since you're not shipping it, only to your plate!

I'm trying to squeeze a few responses here and there.

Thamks Bill, that sounds inspiring. There's something about achieving one's goal.

Your chinenses are beautiful, Greg...Way prettier than mine—way down here at latitude 32ºN!
Thanks Gary, but that's not true. I may have gotten an earlier start with the indoor seedlings.

My season peaks in August.....as the bartender says,"Last Call". So I have to squeeze the last drop out of the plants by September. "Early to Bed, Early to Rise" ...

Scott, thanks for the comments ! I look for any advantage to get the earliest harvest...it's always a crap shoot here with the pre-summer weather.

Hey Rick,
Yes, the visqueen is construction grade fiber embedded. Its generally used here as a wind block on highrise construction. Although very flexible and lightweight its pretty much tear proof. I prefer to use this over the heavier weight 8 mil opaque sheeting. The framing is 5 x 10 ft. I used 2 x 8" and 1 x 4 " for the plastic.

All sides roll up to the top , the weight keeps them in place or can be bongee'd and left that way during the day. This next week will be sunny so I'll need to use the shade cloth. Usually takes about a week for the leaves to adjust. It's a small project to put up but gets me a few extra weeks in the front end to harden the plants off. I'll tear the frames down in a couple of weeks.

thanks for stopping by and the comments.

awesome pics as usual. Got them babies outside. Go Big or Go Home......
Pia...I like that motto

Thanks,The weather has been brutal lately, I'll take any advantage that I can take. Even with the string of nice days that were expecting I'll still keep the frames filled with plants.

Looking awesome, Greg! Love to see the plants outside, even if it is in hoophouses (awesome themselves, BTW.). And I agree, that plants look great. And that breakfast was fit for a king! LOL at drill sgt Shane!
Thanks Doc !

Hey Andy,
Thanks for the Maple Syrup ! It had just the right amount of heat, any more would take away from the Pure flavor.
Just like making jam or jelly...too much heat can overpowder the taste of the fruit. I put just enough peppers in mine to let the heat creep up after the taste of the fruit stes in.

I'm keeping about 10 Goat plants.....they have a unique taste.

Maybe some "Jammin Goat Jelly" this year !

Who are your seed sources for the Bahamian Goats?
Haha, pretty phunny Steve !

Keeping not only my fingers crossed but some of my plants as well !

Good luck on the test results...

I have a few sources for the Bahamian Goats, The original source was from Cappy (PepperRidgeFarm) also from Brent (FadetoBlack) who lives in the Bahama's. I haven't seen him around here lately, he also sent me some island Yellow and Orange Bonnet seeds...more plants that I'm interested in seeing. Grant (JungleRain) is another source that I've been growing. All are tasty, some have different shapes.

Greg they're looking really good brother. So, if your turning off the lights in 2 weeks does that mean it's T - 2 weeks and counting to plant out now?
I wish it were 2 weeks to plantout. Last year would have been. In 2 weeks I intend to have all the plants outside to harden off. My goal is to plant mine the weekend of the 18th. It's up to MotherNature...If she agree's then it's a date.

Looking awesome, Greg! Some are in 12 gallon pots already? Wow. Going to have huge rootballs at plant out, very nice. Nice Datil pod-a-forming!
I've got 5-12 gal indoors. Two of them are overwinters the others were started in January. These will all get potted up to 20 gal nursery containers outside. I was originally thinking on keeping the 2 overwinters indoors (Pimenta de Neyde and Jamaican Scotch Bonnet) to use for crossing intentions but the thought of heating up the house with the growlights while the AC is running doesn't make sense, so everyones getting kicked out of the house.....party's over........lol
