PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Gotta make some profit, since ya spend your hard earned money on growing em.... Make a lil here and there at the local farmers market will cover some cost but not all.. Sunday is tomorrow and maybe we will see some delicious food

Hello, ............I'm new here.................

Well it just feels that way since I haven't been able to keep my glog up !

May I need one of those blue "Grow-agra" pills to keep things going................. :D

Anyways, sorry for the lack of updates, however things are starting to move along. I'm hoping on having most plants in by next weekend.

Here's a few recent shots.............."The Ugly, the Bad, and the Good"

A few folks were asking me about sunscald, heres a Purple Bhut x Viper that was exposed to too much sun the 1st few days of hardening off.
The lower leaves began turning transparent. The new growth is coming in fine on this plant and others effected.

Yikes !........here's a more severe looking plant. I call this the "cafeteria line" plant...a bit of everything, Frostbite on the leaf edges caused by the 27 deg temps. The plant was under the coldframe with a frost blanket but this one was on the edge of the group. Also has yellowing due to overwatering and a bit of sunscald. It will recover, though.............depressing isn't it...............lol

These are the smallest and the last to come out of the house. All annuums, mostly New Mex varieties and some larger sweet bell types. All under the cold frame.

Under the other frame I have some cut backs which I do for a few balconey and deck growers. The front plants are in 2 gal containers the one's in the back, which need potting up are in 5.25" 's
The growth will stay in a shrublike pattern which makes it ideal for those who are lacking perimeter growing space..Also works well with clones, for those who have tents or closet grows indoors.
I see Jamison and Chickona also perform this procedure. I might just call this the "Jam-kona" ...........hehe

Here's the bulk of the containers, about 200- 2 gal. I'm going to start planting most of these later this week once the load of mushroom compost gets dumped off.

About 200 tomato plants in 1 gal containers, most will get sold at a few plant sales.

Here's the top of a 7/Pot st #2. The leaves seem a bit light. Once this gets planted as with the others, they will get a misting of Epsom Salts and a topping of compost along with the usual 10-10-10 (dance scores...ha) granular fertlizer.

Carmel Bhut forking out...........................man

but was

A "St Martin Yellow"...well at least thats what I'm calling it. I brought the seeds back from some farmer's mkt pods They called them "bonnets" but I've seen that through the Caribbean. You either have Habanero's, Congo's or Bonnets. It all depends on the region, not the shape or taste of the peppers.

a few more photos shortly...

a Bahamian Goat starting to form..........can't wait for these !

another "Butt-hamian Goat" ................ha

Purple Bhut Jolokia

Here's a flower bed, I'll have some taller perennials coming up in the background and midsize and border plants in the front. The containers are mostly 15 gal with a few squat 12 gal mixed in. I'll plant some laterial mid growing plants in the pods,...a variety of colors.

More plant photos this weekend...here's a food shot to wrap this up.

Here's a quick meal from this past weekend:
Ingredients: Anaheims, Habaneros, Poblanos, Jalapenos, Cilantro, Avacados, Onions, "Skirt Steak",

Flour Tortilla's, Smoked Sea Salt, Homemade Chipotle Sauce, Ground Orange Hab Powder, Cumin Powder.

Dust the steaks in salt, cumin and Habanero powder and grill until medium/rare. Sprinkle likewise powders on vegetables and drizzle with oil. Toss over high heat until charred. Let staeaks rest for 10, the slice up.

Serve up "Fajita Style" with a side of Guac, chips and a cold one........I usually don't drink Corona's, unless we're in Mexico and they're a $1 a bottle....ha. But a 12 pack here was under 10 bucks for the weekend......................hmm, must have been a holiday, or something.

This is how I like it....no knife, nor fork..............a drizzle of Chipotle and dats dat !

Thanks for stopping by...........plants will be going in, soon !

Holy CHEESUS! Now that is a great looking patio. I really wasn't missing the whole growing thing because I haven't had time to spend on here....but I think this is the post that makes me miss it...

Keepin the fingers crossed some survived the winter, but if not it looks like I am going to live through threads like this.

Happy Growing!

Wow Greg, great pics as always. I always really enjoy catching up on your GLog.
Matt,
Good to hear from ya. I hope all is well !

I remember your garden from last year, you had all those crazy looking pods that people are trying to grow. Super-Duper-Hots.

Keep yourself safe, ...

Gotta make some profit, since ya spend your hard earned money on growing em.... Make a lil here and there at the local farmers market will cover some cost but not all.. Sunday is tomorrow and maybe we will see some delicious food

Yep, I'll make a little here and a ltttle dare. It's fun just talking to folks that have the same interest...growing !

Ha, I cooked the meal Sunday but just got too tired to post anything. That darn photobucket...next time the survey pops up I may just give them my $.02...
Thanks for your comments.

Hola Greg, thanks for showing me what sunscald looks like, I always called it sunburn, lolz. I believe some of my young plants have had it too, which is strange as they’re all outside all da time other than this past winter where I started da eggs inside. The two you showed don’t look all that bad, I think they’ll make a nice recovery, just don’t rub this stuff on them, lols.

Between the last to come out of your house, the plants under your frames and bulk of your planted containers it looks like you’re in for a banner year … you’ll be giving DesertChris a run for his 1,000+ club, hehe. That said, the pictures and all the plants look marvelous! Lucky for me I had a huge home made steak, onion, pepper & cheese hoagie right before I saw your foodie. Although the pics still make me hungry and I love how you do the layout ... great update brethren!

looking fantastic Greg. I like the fact you are growing 4 different sources of the Bahamian Goat. I will be very interested to see what (if any) variations you see .
Thanks Tripp,I'll probably have about 10 plants in the dirt. I like the flav of the pods. They're easy enough to munch on without having to put it down.

Get back fast, so you can join the glog....and maybe another "throwdown"!

We're ready when you are.
Thanks J, I figured somebody was checking this out...

Man your food shots always make me hungry...

Love that Purple Bhut - beautiful plant!
Thanks Andy,The P.Bhut is a dynamite looking plant even when it greens out a bit. However, it doesn't produce the best tasting of the Bhut's, though. I look at it as an ornamental.

Ha...LOL,I remember the billboard well.
Samething burn or scald, the plants usually recoup.
Just about all my lights are off. I've got some cuke, squash and eggplant seeds germinating under some bulbs. When they get they're 2nd true leaves the they'll get hardened off. We really can't plant those before June. The yellow flowers attrack all kinds of June beetles and borers. Usually the 2nd week of June times it right.

I won't have to worry about the 1k club, my wife won't let me join that one.

Once again, thanks for the input, and inspiration...

Ahhhh, all is right in the world. Welcome back my brother! Looking as expected, even the great Pic1 has to have a couple get a little on the ugly side. Love the Butt Bahamian pods! The food looked killer...and I am on a calorie restiction program right now...Damn I wanna EaT....so I mean you're really killing me! Shaping up nicely in Chi-Town though!

The good the bad the ugly we all got 'em, I'm thinking I may have more than my share...LOL

Plants look great as usual! In my case they looked better until they found dirt, and the bugs found them...but that's a learning experience for me...Annuums are happy Chinense are "targets".

You sure have a bhut load of plants, hope you do well with your sell off...they're certainly MUCH better than the stock they can get at the HD and such..

Your "Jeeters" looked great, plenty of flavor!

Thanks Scott,
I agree the c.chinense are targets, not sure why. Most annuums have thicker leaves.

Although our heat and humidity can't compare to yours and the duration of the lengthy season, my downfall is not having drip irrigation for the containers. The plants always perk up at the end of the day by sometimes look droopy during peak times. I still believe less water is better for the super-hots in the longrun. And besides wet containers and high heat/humidity = root rot.

I have a couple of local plant consevatory sales that I participate each year, and work some sales out of my yard..........I like those, no booth rentals and no transporting the plants..........lol. It's all fun, I may just keep more for my self for processing purposes....

Thanks for the comments and the "likes"

Ha, ....thanks bro, can't keep a good thing away...from me and being here is just fine in my book. Don't diet yourself, go green...not "soylent" but herbs and mesclun greens. Those will fill you up..........with a couple of pints....of water.

My plants will be sheit shape by inspection.........may not have pods but they'll look perdy.........lol

Thanks for paying your respects....undivided attention.

Skirt chars up quick and doesn't need a marinade. I like using flank steak also for the fast sear, usually marinade that one, chimi-churri or an oil based concoction..............spice of course.
Home made Chimi-churri with hot pepper in da mix is to die for, love it on flank, great call Greg! While some might find it strange, the green mango salsa from the Caribbean I posted some time ago is killer on flank as well, we be making some up this Friday as we're now in green mango season \o/

That Goat looks like it hiked up it's corolla skirt and gave us a booty shot! That is classic Greg material there! You have a lot of young ones to look after. I don't like seeing that bronze on the leaves, can't wait to get it on my skin though!! The season is upon us,let the skurrying begin!
