Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

you must have "potting-up" to a science Greg. You say you're putting some plants out this w/e? Weather looks good here this morning. Those lights going to be turned off like you said? I have no idea how long to set mine for on/off periods but I have to have it approximately right because I'm happy w/ the results so far. Initially, i had mine on for 17 & then reduced them down to on for 14.

Greg, hope plants are faring well outside. I spoke with Ramon the other day and the Bahamian Goat pepper came up. He was telling me about the conch salad with goats he had in the Bahamas years back and how extraordinary they were. I'm a little curious on the flavor. Is there a standard shape/color/flavor on these caribbean jewels?

Im extremely curious about the Bahamian goats. I only ended up with one plant, but going to treat her right ;)
They appear peach/light orange, somewhat bonnet shaped, kinda between scorp & bonnet from what i have seen. But after all i have read on the flavor, i knew i had to try them. Can't wait! I have junglerain's seed going also.

Everything looks amazing. It going to cool to see a side by side of so many bonnets. You will have to line them all up for me. Between you and Steve this is serious!
This will be my first season with, hopefully, a true bonnet. Almost a for sure thing with what i got going!
I finally got a refining fire chiles scotch bon to start growing. Terrible germ rate, then lost a couple as they all stalled out for weeks. Now down to two that finally put out true leaves that are growing daily! So looks like i will get to try them too, along with a few others.
Keep the pictures coming. I'm alway checking on you, even if I'm not saying anything. Take care!

Hey Pic1... awesome looking plants as always.... great pictures to boot! Man, when these take off you are going to need help picking them all!
Thanks, I'll have help...it will be in the form of a glass with ice and some Amber Rum in it...

It would be nice to have some help, but I try not to let the peppers pile up on the plants. Usually do a harvest twicw a week at peak time. I learned if I let it go too long it ties up my weekends.

Hey...thanks,

I try to keep the plants moving or their roots will be curled up like cramming a foot in an undersized shoe.

I'm leaving some lights on 24/7 to add new growth to some plants I cut back. There's a few folks that have balconies or small decks that purchase plants from me.

I usually grow a few of each type and cut one back. The new growth will form a shorter shrublike plant which works well in a smaller area. No difference in pod size or shape but many more in a more confined area.

I'll probably be planting tomatoes around the 11th and the peppers the 18th, weather permitting. My yard is a mess right now otherwise I'd snap a photo or two. Once the plants are all out of the house then I'll start updating my glog.

Hey Steve,
Not sure if Ramon had the "Bahamian Goat" which is peach color and Bonnet shaped or what a friend who live in the Bahama's in the 70's described to me as a "Goat" pepper which is a "Birdseye" chili which is fairly common on the islands.

I like the flavor of the Bahamian Goat...it's fruity/habish not like an orange hab. Very different. Last year I grew 4 plants, this year I'll plant 10. I hope to sauce up some pods and make some powder. There's different shaped pods floating around but the taste is the same, at least with the one's from my garden. You should grow some...

Today was a very good day here for putting plants out. Went up to 70. Going down to 44 tonight.
You must have gotten our weather, yesterday was 81 here, I have 200-1 gal containers of tomatoes outside. I watered them 3 times, that's how fast it was evaporating.

Some of the peppers looked wimpy in the sun...they perked up once the shade set in....no need to water those, the 2 gal pots have a mix of peat, worm castings and a soil mix which stays moist.

Cover those plants up if your temp drops below 40.

Cool !

I'm glad to see more folks growing the "Goats" and others finding there way to the c.chinense "Bonnets".
I have a number of Scotch Bonnet varieties. Some from island vacations that we've taken others from seeds that were brought back for me. I started with the idea of growing mainly Bonnets this year, but there's too many crazy super-hots that I couldn't pass on.I didn't get my plants in last year until around Memorial Day.

This year will be a week or so sooner. I'm still trying to fiqure out what's going in, where.Good luck with your Bonnets and Goats.....

I also have a variety from Grant (junglerain) which produced well last year.

I’ll toast you on dat

You sir are a perfectionist and I prefer to wait on that perfection, keep up the great work! Greg if my back yard looked as perfect as yours, it would be featured on PepperMons glossy front cover ;)

No definitive label on it, only says “Bahamian Goat” on the baggie. The ones I ate in the Bahamas were always green at restaurants so I don’t know what color they turned to but the shape was like this one (click here). Been too long since I’ve eaten one but I really want one like that, if it turns out to be a bird pepper I’ll be a little bummed as I want that fruity/Hab flavor all in one, please no offense Greg ^_^

I apologize for the lack of photos. Next week I should have all the plants out (providing no frost warnings) and I'll start shooting with the pocket camera again..........lol

All is well on the "Midwestern" front. Half of my growlights are shut down, half of my peppers are hardening outside. Some have sunscald on the older growth but the new leaves are adjusting and looking fine.

I still have many mild and sweet pepper plants to pot up and I'm in the process of starting the cukes and squash. Tomatoes are outdoors and are doing great.

Our weather was in the 80's yesterday, that felt good but I would prefer the transistion from the 60's to the 70's first...

Greg, great to read that your weather is getting warmer and that soon they'll be loving your backyard's sunshine ^_^
No need to post this now, sometime down the road or pm me. Can you take a picture for me of what the sunscald looks like and give a little mas detail, thanks.

Thats what the peppers look like in the photo.....I bet they're fare out well in a "ceviche" fresh or powdered.

3 have been in one egg for 5 days now, I'm praying to the Pepper Jah that one pops ;)

Edit: BTW Steve if you want that seed I believe I have 4 left and they are yours for the asking ^_^

200 tomato plants, you're quite ambitious!

Are you getting any of this front hammering us now?

Here's to no more cold weather until fall.

Shhhh...quiet folks. What we're looking for today is the rare, and in fact once thought to be extinct, non Sunday Greg update. If we're lucky enough, we'll be treated to some of the most amazing plant and food related photos known to THP...C'mon Greggie boy!!! Post 'em up!!!

:D......!

Out of the 200 I'll probably plant 20, the rest , lets just say I'll be ambitious to sell.

Our temps have dropped back down to the 40's.......
The rain is just West of Chicago and moving straight North. Sunday we might take a ride to visit our son who's in Iowa City, it's snowing in that area.

Next week will get back up to the 70's.....I may have to take a day off from work to get caught up on the outdoor chores

Thanks Ramon,
The parental unit will not only get a visit from his mentors but free groceries and lunch at his favorite joint.
It's a 7 hr round trip so Sunday is shot for work in the garden.
Sorry, I didn't forget but I didn't pick up the camera only the muddy gardening gloves.
Todays overcast and ideal for a few photos. After work I'll snap a few and send them to you tonite.
Rain is the best for the plants...pretty soon your MoA's will be raining witl peppers.
