PSF 2021

Though peppers make up more than half of the plants we grow in our garden. It is definitely not everything we grow. Starting this grow log for 2021 to share with y'all our journey to feeding ourselves. We have started prep on the garden beds outside. Today I will amend the soil by layering compost over the old beds then mulching the entire garden. The last couple of years we have been taking the no dig approach. Yesterday we started our first vegetables. Tomatoes and eggplant. We also started a few black-eyed Susan Vines for some pop of color this summer. 8 varieties of tomato. Three each- Sunray, kellogg's breakfast, Marglobe, Black Krim, Creole, Early Cascade, Blue Berries, Black Cherry. The eggplant is striped and I started 6. We will have varieties of cucumber, okra, squash, potatoes, peanuts, herbs, ground cherries, beans and more.

Today I was quite productive. Onion sets went in. Red for eating fresh and salsas. Whites for sauces. And yellows for cooking. Turnips are almost ready to harvest. Also put in some celery starts that I picked up from the nursery. I never have any luck starting celery myself. Potted up some peppers. Planted more seeds. Mostly flowers. And we have our first blooms of the season.

What type of onions do you have to plant in Louisiana? Long or short day, or can you choose?

I never was a big fan of celery, though I did like celeriac a lot. Doesn't do well in the tropical lowlands though :(

I just learned recently that there was a long day and a short day when it came to onions. Our nurseries just sell onions based upon color variety so we're not giving an option. Celery by itself I am not a fan of however it's flavor lens well to soups and stews.

Busy morning. Pulled turnips and put in a couple of varieties of potatoes. Adirondack blue and red norland. Borage started blooming as well. In just a month we will be putting out plants and sowing many things.

Expecting temps down to 14° tonight. My greenhouse will not stay warm in those type of temperatures (record-breaking for my area) so we've decided for the next couple of days to take up counter space in our kitchen. I know the lighting is not quite adequate for them to maintain for much longer than a couple of days but we are expecting warmer weather within 48 hours. Happy Love day pepper friends.

I'm happy to say. That our make shift counter lights were just enough to keep our plants alive. And thriving. Sun sugar cherry tomatoes we're getting so big in the greenhouse we made a decision to put them out and in the ground. May plant a few more tomatoes today. Sowing beans, cucumber and squash varieties today as well. We harvested some carrot and as always. One for Ozey.

Put in a flower bed utilizing logs we had laying around. Three inches compost and two inches of aged arbor chips. The bed surrounds north south and east around the chicken run. We will plant butterfly attractors. Mostly milk weed to attract monarch caterpillars. We gather, feed, house and hatch them safely away from the wasp population that would most likely be their demise. The plants on the east wall will also help shade the chickens in the afternoon sun.
