Purple Thunder / Bhut Jolokia x (PdN x Bonda Ma Jacques)

I have decided to start a dedicated Grow Log for
the Purple Thunder Bhut Jolokia hybrid.

It made its first appearance in 2015:
"This coloration might be the result of the intense
light on these red Bhuts, but only 2/6 show the trait.
If it is a cross,the only purple-y plant near the bhut
was Trippa's Mystery Cross. All of these seeds from

I cut back majorly on varieties and number of plants this year. Figured I could maybe take care of 45 plants so I did 15 types 3 of each. When I potted up I only did 2 of each and gave the rest away. I should be able to handle 30, and maybe get some other crops in
 
Devv-I have pods with holes in them also.  Not many.  Do they start out with a kind of brown spot on the pod?  I have a few with obvious insect related holes.  I also have the other deal where it starts out kind of brown in color and its on the sunny side of the pod.  Usually it is on pods that have hardly any shade protection from the leaves.  I think its sun scald.  Purple Thunder pods are extremely thin walled and susceptible to sun burn.  I think.  Its my guess anyways.  Can you take a closer photo of the hole?

When I see any fruit with a bug hole it gets airborne, as far out of the garden as I can throw it. I don't want whatever ate it to be around ;) So that pod is in the field somewhere. 
I have cut several pods open over the years and never find the bugger that made the hole.
And yes I have had some sun scald. I cut 3-4 pods with the damage off the Mystery plant shown above, wait I do have a pic:

So I used some scraps for a makeshift sun block.

On my plants the insects are few and far between.  I rarely see insects.  I think the insects taste those spicey peppers and they hit the road.  The pods are basically not edible to the insects.

I saw the first sign of sun damage on a sweet pepper (Jimmy Nardello) about 3 weeks ago. A week or so later, maybe two I put up the sun shades (30% cloth).
 
My climate here is very dry. One hour West it gets desert like.
 
Tomatoes can go in the ground March 1st. Done by the end of June. Peppers add 2-4 weeks to the schedule.
 
I see the sun damage on your pods.
 
Devv- you and I have different climates.  My climate is also very hot but its also very humid.  Lately its been about 85% humidity.  I think its amazing that Purple Thunder is doing so well in both of our extreme climates.  Many variety's can't take extremes like this.  Your plants look just great by the way.  I can see that you have worked hard to build that sun shade for the plants.  I had to protect my plants also from the wind and sun.  I also placed my plants together real close so they could protect each other.  The peppers have different color shades depending on how the sun hits them.  I just started eating the chili's as well.  The quality and flavor is good.

Thunder 3. So far about 5 pods with the holes in them like the far left orange pod.
 
Looks like pepper weevil damage from the picture, especially if the hole is all the way through to the inside.
 
I had those last year.  I'm hoping they aren't too bad this year.
 
Sorry to hear about the bugs, hopefully it stays minimal!

Yes Paul, your keen eye did spot the first pod, let's see how well it does this early on!

And Devv, it wanted to be in the front but was too tall for a European car so it had to make do with the backseat luxury... ;)

Hello everyone and Happy Mother's day if this apply's to you.  Bear with me.  This is the first time I have ever used Imgur to post a foto.  I hope it works.  I was able to harvest quite a nice basket of super-hot peppers today.  I am a noob with the super-hots.  This foto shows the Purple Thunder Mystery pods I picked today as well as 4 Purple Thunder Number 3 pods.  I also have Purple Thunder number 2 plants and did pick one pod that was ripe.  Those are the same yellow caramel color as the Purple Thunder Mystery.  The majority of the pods are a little smaller on the PT number 2 plant but the plant is extremely loaded with pods.  There is a clothes pin in the photo to give perspective.
 
Today I split the peppers and saved seed.  Not fun.  I had several variety's of Bhut Jalokia to save seed from as well.  That is like working in a Bio Weapons lab.  My rubber gloves had tiny leaks in them.  My hands are numb.  I handed over the split peppers to my wife who shredded the peppers up in a food processor.  There was a lot of peppers.  She mixed in a small amount of vinegar and added salt and a little sugar.  You can't even enter the kitchen.  She is pissed.

sounds like you had fun, at least ya didn’t attempt to bake yours inside the house and ended up macing everyone. Definitely curious about the finished product on yours, keep us posted. Btw the best way to clean super hots off hands is to use rubbing alcohol to scrub your hands, I don’t even use gloves most of the time anymore  :party:
 
I have been eating these hot peppers for a month or so except that I haven't been picking that many.  I was mixing them with Panamanian Chombo's and other medium hot peppers and using the same recipe.  As the weeks have gone by the harvests of the super hots have gotten much better.  So, this time we used pure super hot peppers.  It was a mix of Purple Thunder and Bhut Jolokia this time.  No Chombo's or tobasco or Thai hots mixed in.  We managed to make a good sized bottle of shredded peppers in vinegar.  Its kind of an island style recipe.  I never throw away the solids any more.  It bound to be very tasty.  I haven't tried it yet.  Its practically pure super-hot peppers ground up mixed with a little salt and vinegar.  Hard to go wrong really.  It'll be much hotter than I am used to.  I am going to have to freeze some of it.  I have a lot of peppers growing and cannot keep up with them.  I am a noob with super-hots but not with growing peppers of lower caliber.  I find the Purple Thunder to be an excellent variety.  Paul really did hook me up when he sent me some seed.  Its real hard to find seed where I live.
