Quad's FrankenGrow diary

Ah cool, thanks!

Now I know what the problem with foil can be.
I just heard it was "bad", but never knew why.

NP then, plants won't be touching it. :)

By the time they outgrow this little contraption, I should have something else figured out. It's kinda a temporary thing to get them going.

Sucks that I have a false ceiling from the 60's in here. It's not the suspended kind you see nowadays..it's permanent. And about 15" lower than the original ceiling based on spots like my closets where it isn't there.

I really don't think punching into it to hang the light is a good plan as it's likely hiding a original ceiling that's falling down. (apt. building roof used to leak)

Yup, tis an adventure around here. ;)

Just a update on how things look. Still waiting for sprouts to appear, but so far so good. :)

What's planted, and my nifty little tags.

Temps are good. Thats just with the light and my 'grow tent'.

looking good Quad...just remember patience is a virtue...

Thanks AJ, I'll try. :)

BTW, buddy of mine I gave some seeds to for his birthday...his Morrich already came up in about 10 days. 4 out of 5 seeds he planted came up too. Gotta love dat groovy THSC seed!

(I planted a bit later than he did, but it's encouraging.)

Ok, well, that didn't work. :(

I made another noob mistake and let the Jiffy's get too wet and too hot a couple days where the temperature got to over 100 in there thanks to weird weather fluctuations.

One day it was like cold and 60's out, the next day over 75.

Since I have no thermostat in this apt. it's a real PITA keeping anything, including me, at a constant temperature from day to night.

So, I'm resorting to the coffee filter and baggy method this time. I'm only using the starter tray to keep the heat averaged out, the ex-jiffy things have been squeezed out and are only to hold up the baggy and keep moisture / hold some bottom heat .

I put the seeds in a coffee filter moistened with weak chamomile tea in the baggie, and put that in the starter tray heald up by the old peat starters from last time, slightly vented so as to not get too hot this time. The tray is still under lights, but about 6-8" away this time.

I'm looking at keeping them between 80-90F for sure..no more cooking with seeds here. :)

Right now, it's about as hot as it'll be all this week, and they are at 87F so that's promising.

Alrighty then..now we have progress.

The new setup..minus some foil, and changed height of the lights..was too close before. At this height, it's still 80-88F and the chives won't stop growing. Yes, that's a microwave bacon griller tray under the chives for drainage..lol

The coffee filter is on top of a regular napkin, both wet with weak chamomile tea and in a partially close ziplock bag.

I put them in on May 29th, and this is today..w00t!

S6300835.JPG

The Dorset and Orange habs are going to town here.

I tell ya, I've learned a bunch of stuff the hard way..hopefully it gets better from here. :D

I just need more room now since i still have the red jalapenos and birdseye to grow..lol

Thanks!

I hope this time things work out.

At what point would ya put the sprouts from the baggy into soil?

I think I'l give it a couple more days at least, but any advice is always nice.

Thanks RB, that seems logical to me too. :-)

Here's todays score.

Needed stuff for potting up, so went to local garden store, and of all things they had they own label of generic bags of soil.

No biggie except it felt familiar and very light for the size, and when I asked what was in it, they said it was Pro-Mix BX. W00T!

S6300839.JPG

So, I got a big bag of it for only $6.99. Apperently they are the only ones around here who repackage it into smaller sizes.

Supercool.

I also picked up a bag of perlite to help with the other soil I have, some red hab seeds that look like Caribbean Reds plus package says Caribbean (like I don't have enough already), and a bottle of SuperThrive for the heck of it.

S6300836.JPG

All of it came to $20 and the gal who helped me was totally hot. :)

Life is good.

Just finished planting seeds into cups now.
I ended up with 24 of 'em. :)

Looks like all the seeds I put in the baggy sprouted, so yay...plus some red jalapenos and the red habs.

S6300848.jpg

I'll need to adjust the hieght of the light when stuff comes up, but it should be ok for now just to keep em warm. I'm using the Jiffy starter tray as drainage for the cups, works pretty well.

I'd taken the lid off the dome to show it, otherwise ya can see much.

The red jalapenos were saved seeds from store-bought peppers. IDK if they will grow or not but I figured why not try eh?

I can always just buy seds if they don't grow. I'm pretty lucky, the garden store has about 20 different kinds of pepper seeds, even 4 kinds of habs.

And ya, I like that bottle for watering as it's s nice size and the nozzle works well. Plus it just seems appropiate.

Argh. The cups all got fungi'd and such.

And nothing came up after I'd pre-sprouted the seeds.

So, I pitched the lot of it and threw out the bag of MG. Good friggin' riddance.

Now, started over with egg cartons for germinating.
Just the Pro-Mix BX, a little added Rootblast, and perlite in the bottom for drainage.

So far, no mold or creatures..crossing fingers this time.

Meanwhile...my bro Ross who I'd given seeds to has tons of plants started. So, he gave me a few and I'm having fun with them now.

Pics (2 fatali and a morich)
S6300942.JPG

IDK, stuff grows fine here, but damn if I can get seeds to grow.
If this last try at startingn from seed doesn't work, I'll just try to get plants or cuttings from my friend and go from there.

Long's I have the chilies, I dont' care how.

Just an update...

I got a few more babies, a Bih, ChocHab and a Dorset. I also repotted the Morich and the Fatali Twins.

S6300962.jpg

From left: Bih Jolokia, Dorset Naga, Naga Morich, Fatali, Choc Hab, Fatali.

Boy, that Morich is a beasty.

Here's a couple new babies.

S6300993.jpg

I usually plant two seeds..that way if one doesn't come up (like the morich in this case) there's backup..and I can always use two eh?

I just love seeing stuff sprouting up. So cuuuute! :)

New update.

The plants are doing great..except my poor Morich. IDK what happened to it. :-(

Plus side is that I'm finally figuring how to sprout seeds...woot!

My trick is using the Jiffy's like normal, but when you fluff up the top to plants seeds I'm using a 1/8" layer of moistened Pro-Mix BX to actually plant in. That way, they aren't getting so wet as before.

It isn't molding or other fungi crap, and the wet peat underneath helps keep both heat and moisture going. So far, stuff is coming up everyday now..FINALLY!

Ok, on to the pics:

S6301006.JPG

The same shot as before, showing new growth. (and the sick Morich)

S6301004.JPG

My Lovely Fatali.

S6301010.JPG

New babies! There's also another orange hab and a CR hab still in the incubator. Note the one Morich has a semi-stuck seedcap..may need surgery.

I'll need to pot those babies up soon here. :)

I've been trying using Epsom Salt and they really like it so far..the foliage is amazing.
