Quad's "new" computer

Well, if you've seen my blog post on my computer, it's pretty ancient stuff. Well, now it's getting better. :)

Picked this up at thift store today:

It's a Dell Dimension 4500. Not new by any means but since I'vce been using a 1Ghz P-3, it's a big leap.

It has a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4, 512Megs of RAM, a CD-RW drive, SBLive! soundcard, and some kind of ATI video card. They kept the hard drive, but that's not a biggie for me.

Here's the good part...the price:

It's whisper quiet and so far runs perfectly. I've only booted it with a Linux CD since there's no HDD, but it's my first P4 computer. (ya I know..)

Oh, and it's still black so it matches my all-black setup w/ the other Dell I've got.

Since I already have a better vid card, black dvd burner, and other crap from the current computer, it's alllll good.

I also bought a pair of scrubs (sooo comfy!), and 3 pairs of socks..came to $3.06. ;)

I may be poor, but I rock the thifty.

I have built the computer I'm at right now from scraps and am damn happy with it.

A lack of money enhances creativity it seems... :)
 
Yeppers, I like Dells a lot.

This GX-150 I am typing on now was used for $40 like a year ago off of CL, and it's been solid even in 100F weather. Thank god I have a Big tower this time though..h8 those slimline cases for trying to upgrade anything.

Yeah, like my IPcop router box..made out of a truly ancient pieced-together pII-266. Great thing..it's a slot1..so no cpu fan. ;)

Even on my 7/1 ADSL, it's rock solid.

I love building stuff, and 'planned obsolescence' is jusst crap IMO.
 
Hehe, yeah... a computer I have put together gives me a much better feeling by simply running each and every day than any preassembled machine could.
The only preassembled comps I'm buying are laptops (well, every xxx years...).
 
Funny bit..I freaked out my relative and a few customers by popping open the comp in the store and checking the parts....don't want a box that's been stripped eh?
 
Except in the case of used stuff, like what I've always dealt with, there could be anything..or nothing..in that case.

I guess I'm one of the olde skool that LIKES getting dirty inside a computer. Nice to see ya do too mate. :D
 
Ya, I've already taken apart the fans and cleaned them, blown the large amount of dust out, put in a better nVidia card, and a couple harddrives.

I'd add the DVD-RW except it in use on this computer ATM. ;)

Just needs 'nother stick of RAM, a fresh install of XP, and I'm set.
 
I can say I have built every puter I have owned mine to this day is still not together its all over the place maby one day ill mount the hdd's and put the side on..mmmmm doubt it lol..I have a gig of ram in this one with a 320 gig hd,80 gig hd 1.8 gig pentium(R) processor msi motherboard nvidea video card and a tonne of other stuff lol..Now im going to go thrift shop hunting for a bigger processor thx to you lol.Hope you get a tonne of use out of it

A friend of mine got something similar the other day for free. what the heck is going on today? just the case alone must worth something. :shocked:
 
Same computer I've got. All kinds of quiet.

I also have a DVD and CD-RW drive, 60gig hard drive (which is plenty for me) and some kind of wacky 3D video card that I don't really use because I'm not a gamer.

However, mine was free. Yep, a friend of mine was moving and he just bought some crazy top of the line laptop and didn't want the tower anymore. So, he wiped the hard drive and gave it to me.

Thats great DD...I love being the thrifty sort.

Yeah, today's been one of those days where the planets all lined up for me.

No hard drive. Well, I have a titsup IBM NetVista with a 40Gig HDD and a brand new vanilla install of XP-SP3, and thought I wonder.... Well...I chucked the HDD in there, booted it right up in safe mode, then let it adjust. Even without sysprep it just booted right back up to full XP and all hardware is detected and cranking. No errors at all. :shocked:

Works perfectly since the hardware on both is nearly identical. My old but still good nVidia Ti4200 128M AGP card loves it's new home too.

Today is full of kittens and win. ;-D

That's my computer, it was stolen last month and already on the west coast. Go figure, LOL. Shotz, how do you post pics on the HP. Don't laugh, I'm new to computers.

Posting pics, ya just need somewhere online to post it from, a website you have, photobucket, imageshack, etc.

Then you use the image URL and the
insertimage.gif
button.

1. click that button
2. paste the addy of the pic
3. profit

The image host sites also have special code ya can copy/paste for fourms liek this. If it already has the tags, ya don't need to use the button on here to make the tags.
