Quad's "new" computer

QuadShotz said:
Thanks!

Since I already have a better vid card, black dvd burner, and other crap from the current computer, it's alllll good.

I also bought a pair of scrubs (sooo comfy!), and 3 pairs of socks..came to $3.06. ;)

I may be poor, but I rock the thifty.

poor you say you are..but damn sensible id say..really nice find..just add some more ram at some point if you can..give you that extra boost when needed..bargain price :)

Thanks!

Must be the scot-irish blood eh? ;)

Yeah..I'll up the ram to a gig or so when I can. For now, it's still pretty fast once ya hone XP down into fighting shape and kill off un-needed services and eye-candy. After all, the machine was built with XP in mind.

I think people forget that when they owned a machine of this spec when it came out they liked it w/ XP then...what's changed?

After about two years a computer is supposedly outdated. I guess most people don't maintain their system at all or just by using some one-click-software. Accordingly the machine gets slower and slower and then they see some rather new PC, see how fast it is and all of a sudden their perfectly okay machine belongs in the stone age.

I am not a gamer, but I can understand that they need to keep their PC up to date to be able to play the newest games. But even that can easily be done without buying a new one every year.

I talked to a guy a few years ago who worked as a truck driver and he had to deliver a container full of "old" PCs to some recycling company. He said most of them looked just fine. He took one home and it works perfectly.

My mainboard and CPU is from an office PC from some company who thought it wasn't good anymore. Been working fine for me for nearly a year now. All my disc drives are from people who "needed" better ones....

I could go on forever I guess!!! :)

Yup, me too. How's this for fun.

Last year I had a couple friends visit that I knew from an online game.
Well, go figure but I needed another windows PC so we could play online together from my house.

So, I found the PC I started playing that game on...in 1997. It hadn't even been booted in probably 5 years...but when I hooked 'er up it ran just fine.

It's a Pentium 233 MMX w/ 48M of ram and Win98FE (upgraded from Win95B). Sure it's ancient, but it does what it was made for. Just think..that thing cost me $1,400 back in like 1996.

Oh, and I popped in a Puppy Linux CD on the 233 and the thing actually seems fast..lol

Weird.

If it works.... ;-)

Yeah, my first PCs were insanely expensive. The faster they get, the cheaper they get. I used to run one of them as an internet PC along with my - back then - new one with W98 for years and it worked perfectly and on top of it, I didn't have to care about a virus or malware, because most of them wouldn't affect W98 anyway.

I even managed to sell my first ever PC (win 3.1, 486, 66 mhz, 200 MB HD, 4 MB RAM) for 500+ bucks after years of using it. It still ran fine, but I decided to get an amazingly fast 200 mhz machine to replace it. Boy, that one was fast back then.

These thing were very pricey at that time. Hard to picture that nowadays....

great Quad m8ty xp is still fine..vista is getting better, but in all honesty is no better than xp apart from its nice looks and 3d desktops..and thats ultimate edition..xp will be fine for years yet espically now service pack 3 is out,if you need any help give me a p.m ive been building p.c/servers for 15 years or so and been i.t for more years than i wish to admit

damn, i wish i knew how to work on comps....

oh, well. I guess i'll just have to up my labor rate to afford a nice, new one.LOL

Don't suppose you can tell me why the batteries keep running out on my wireless mouse Talas and why it can be sooo painfully slow to move? Damn bloody mouse, it's close to being chucked out the window. Sometimes a good smacking against the desk helps it jump into action.

Does a different mouse move quicker? If it doesn't adjust it in the windows settings. Sometimes, a mouse even has its own setup program that comes with it. If you had to install sth like that when you got it, check it first.

About the batteries, I guess it's one of the f**kin' wasters (just quotin the Libs) that uses power even when it's not in use.

Yeeeeaaaaahhhh.... I know..... you asked Talas, not me.... :)

Yeah the cheap wired mouse I had that came with the PC moves 100 mph quicker than this one. The wireless one is fine for speed if I replace the batteries every other day but that's just beyond ridiculous having to do that. I think this one keeps losing its connection and it's only 2 feet away from the 'stick in' control bit. I might be a patient person when it comes to chillis but not computers, they make me shout, scream and swear in a very unlady-like way.

* I would never mind you or anyone else answering to a question Chiliac, directed at you or not :)

`THROUGH IT IT IN THE BIN` R.B ;)

get yourself a cheap logitech wireless mouse..or mouse and keyboard..try ebuyer or scan.

Thanks Talas, it would in the long run as I'm using Kodak or Duracell batteries, none of those Asda Smart Price batteries, they're only good for powering a clock for a day or so.

In this case I can only second what Talas said. Get something you can recharge - most definitely! Your bank account and the environment will be grateful! :)

Hey RB, I hava a cheap ($8.00 usd on ebay) Logitech wireless mouse, and only use NiMH recharables in it. It lasts for months before a recharge with 2500-2800mAh batts. And yes, most mice differ in their DPI and tracking speeds.

IDK if your mouse has it's own software or not, but ya can go to Start Menu >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Mouse >> Pointer Options to adjust the speed. There's usually Acceleration & Speed.

I usually have acceleration set to low and speed set to medium on this mouse. Older mice had lower DPI/Tracking and needed higher speeds for me.
Hope thats useful. :)
