RocketMan 2014 - Resurrection

Wow, first growing season in the new house and I'm totally stoked for this one. Lots of prep work still to be done but there's plenty of time to get it done before plant out. So, here is a pic of where Pepper Row will be going in:

I'll be coming out about another 18 to 24 inches from the fence. The brick line will move out to the new edge and the Ivey will be kept cut back to wher it is now so the fence doesn't show through, she who must be obeyed has made it known that she doesn't want to see it :)

I'm still working on the list and as these will probably be in for a while I'm actually thinking about rather a short list using the peppers I use most often in sauces but can't get locally like Fataliis and planting 3 or 4 of each.

The other, non-pepper stuff will be growing in the big bed at the end of the row. We'll be putting in raised beds there but first I have to remove this bast@rd:

I'm not surprised man. Bet it was a fantastic chile.

Noticed your ferments don't use airlocks. Do you just burp the jars ever so often? How necessary do you think the airlocks are?

Just wanted to say thanks for teaching me how to ferment peppers for hot sauce for three years now I've been mastering the techniques learned in your how-to thread and I love them so thanks again! Hope your grow is excellent this year!

Well, last week we returned to typical Florida Summer weather. that means Hot humid mornings and then about 3:00 it rains like there's no tomorrow for about 10 to 15 minutes and then it's hot and even more humid :)
During the 10 to 15 minutes of rain everything that didn't have good stems was pelted so hard they were pulverized and then the trays and small pots were washed out. So, everything is dead. The OW's were attacked by something that loved the green leaves as there are none left and since there was no scat, dung, guano left to id I have no idea by what. Fortunately I had just started a new tray and have it on the back porch under the screen so instead of getting pelted it gets a nice shower and I already have a row of coty's up. I'll try and get some pics tonight and post them. Needless to say it's been a heck of a grow so far.

MaxCap PM'd me about this and I want to share what I told him about it in case anyone else has been wondering the same thing:

I have to say that it will depend on the type of container your fermenting it in. I typically use the large Mission Pickle jars to do my ferments in. I can put the lid on it to where it's just on there what i would call finger tight, or on till I feel resistance but not torqued down. For the sauce I currently have brewing for my daughters wedding I had to use one of my brew buckets and on that one I have an Airlock.

The difference is that the pickle jar will self vent, when enough pressure builds up it lifts the lid of the jar just enough to vent out the excess pressure and then settles back down. The brew bucket though is a good tight seal so an airlock was needed. I filled it with plain water. Hope that explains it for you.

Thanks, I really enjoy hearing when someone has learned something from my posts.  Be sure to post up your ferments and lots of pics in the Hot Sauce thread. Especially do so if you have problems so we can trouble shoot them. Everyone learns something when problems get posted and worked out. I've even been thinking about starting a Trouble shooting thread just for that.

NOOOOOOO......

Damn, sorry to hear about the weather, been dealing with the downpours too.  Just like captain insane-o, mother nature shows no mercy..(effin BITCH)! Glad to hear you have some reserves, hopefully enough to get pepperrow going. The OW's may come back tho huh? I had all the leaves stripped off of mine from the wind and though its been slow its coming back nicely.

Thanks for the update, and as for #266...you are braver than me. Good luck with that :D

Ok, so when I looked at them last time it was in dawns early light and so I really didn't get a good look at them. Tonight I did and while it's still bad, it's not as bad as I thought.

Lets start with the OWs

They're all mysterys after the move but this is the best one going. Even a little pod :)

The tray that was really washed out my wife had already moved to the garage. This one you can see where it was drown in water. The soil is packed down tight.

Now I just have to pull out my cheat sheet and figure out what's growing here ;) always fun.

Cheers Y'all Hump day tomorrow

Now that is a cast-iron beotch Bill, sorry to hear about the drownings pepperwise... Glad to hear you have more started to fill the holes in the line... maybe Jamie has some tricks he can show you to keep your plants on an even keel in your environment. Good luck!

Bill send some of that rain my way......no hail please..

It sounds like a rough start to your season, but I'm sure once you can get the plants in the ground they'll take off with growth.

Man, if I had the spell casting ability to do it I'd send you some. Instead I'll send up some rain prayers for y'all :)

bb Morton's salt has nothing on a Florida summer "Shower" When it rains it Pours, shoot when it rains it's a torrential down pour but it only lasts about 3 to 5  minutes so..... Oh, and with regards to #266, it's to go with the Wedding sauce I'm making for my oldest daughter wedding. They wanted something for their takeaway for guests that spoke of the family and a Hot Sauce just seemed to be it. What I have in the fermenter is only Jalapeno level heat so for those that like it a bit hotter, a little dab 'll do it :)

Have a great weekend!

RM, which of the trio didnt make it....manzano? That topped peach bhut is gonna be a big producer once she gets her new shoes! Have you hit them with any ferts?

pure evil--great addition to the wedding sauce!

Ughhhh....damnit Bill! You got me bummed out over here. I haven't visited in a while and was hoping to come over to pepper row full of ripening pods by now! To most of the dedicated foodies on here I would say pack it in...but I think these hard lessons will pay off for you in seasons to come. You'll get there even if you took a few detours. If I had any extras I would gladly send them your way. On the bright side, you're back to seeds popping, which is one of my very favorite parts of the grow. Sure helps if you can watch them pop while munching on some fresh pods though.

On a separate note they have some deer-rabbit repellent that should help you out. Will also work for squirrels and other small rodents I believe. In the absence of that you could also buy some bulk cayenne powder and give them a good dusting each evening. Once whatever is munching on them gets into it once or twice they'll learn to go elsewhere and you can back off on the applications.

The Manzano and the Peach Bhut live! I haven't hit them with any ferts yet but was thinking I might give them a light dose of fish next Saturday.

Shane I wish you were able to see a fully up and functioning Pepper Row as well but these things happen. Disappointing yes, but I try not to let it get me down. Actually had a Platoon Sergeant give us the old "How we act in times like these defines who we are as" speech which as I remember was followed up with the Adm. Painter quote from The Hunt For Red October, "Russians don't take a dump, son, with out a plan." which is why I had the next batch of seed already going. I initially was just going to start Tomatoes but then decided to finish the rest of the cells out with peppers just in case things went to heck again. These I'm not putting outside the screen till their big enough to go into the ground. Nothing seems to bother anything in the ground and the Bulk bottle of Cayenne sounds like a good idea, thanks.

LOL, yeah I know what you mean. We didn't get as battered as some other places did.

Stay safe brother! You've had the d***edest luck with weather the last couple of seasons... I hope things turn around for you soon!

Thanks, I have all the seedlings inside the screen so the big, tray emptying raindrops are turned into more of a mist when they get to them. I'm going to try to keep them in there till we get out of the heavy rain or they get big enough to go in the ground. Hoping to get to pulling some sod up this weekend and start to get pepper row going and ready for some pepper plants to go out. I'll try and get some pics up tonight too.

Friday Eve Y'all!!
