Oh man 40 bags of the black mulch... most likely the plastic mulch right... I heard somewhere or on here that the dyed mulch can bleed into the soil thus causing problems with the plants... ??? or i could be in the wrong...

Our family has two pits that run around the back yard and this is what im doing to prevent them from chomping on my babies... one of em has already gotten to one of my Blue mystery plants... Started putting these up afterwards...

that is a fantastic idea. How do you harvest? is it easy to remove for harvesting? The mulch is the black dyed kind. I have never heard of the plastic mulch before. This is like the fifth year we have used it and the landscaping plants dont seem to mind as I have to end up cutting and reshaping them atleast three of four times in the summer. Ill take pics of the front yard tomorrow also.

Well im not at that point yet and i was really only planning on using these till the plants got big enough so the dogs wouldn't bother em... Right now i have two overwintered plants in another bed and they don't touch em....

IMAG0620_zps9b873145.jpg

Maybe once the plants start producing pods i might take the cages off or just cut some holes into the sides and harvest em that way....

I started working on the beds back in September, layed down bags and bags of manure and compost... Pulled weeds which seemed like forever... We moved into this house back in january of last year, so i did some prework to em for this year...and its a never ending battle

Yes. It is all work. The grass I dug up for last years grow is sitting in a nasty looking pile with some weeds and some Sandy casualties. Hoping I can turn it into compost. I cant use food because the racoons and possums around here are on steroids. not to mention field rats. It would just be do damn much. I need to find a nitrogen source that wont cause the foxes, raccoons, rats, possums and other vermin to go nuts. I dont wanna feel like I live in the bottom of a Bronx restaurant in August.

Throw some pepper flakes all over it and see it they like it or not... if that doesn't stop em then make some pepper water and soak it all....

NOOOOO the plants in the front stay out all year. They have nothing to do with whats going on with my peppers... The plants in the front are mostly evergreens and perennials that come back every year. the peppers are in the weeeeeee bck yard when I can get them there pics tomorrow

Nothing better than video updates... So Pia with the ones that are leaning over when you go to plant em just dig a lil deeper and it will give em the support they need... Love how the fork holding the plant up... I run my mind thinking of stuff to use so i don't have to spend the extra money or wasting the gas having to go back to the store...

Thanks Ramon. I too can't wait to see which will be my new fave. I am actually enjoying this years grow. Even with all the hiccups. It's been a wonderful learning experience. And thanks for the trini song. Sure it will kick them into high gear

Nice update! A ton of variety there. Glad to hear the bugz are gone.

So you're putting them out during the day?

Thanks Devv. Yup they are outside during the day to get rid of the bugs and crap

"Next stop in the ground"+1, nay +nth degree positive! Gorgeous, Pia and nice recovery from whatever it was eating them. Depending on how damned determined wildlife is--around here is squirrels--stupid mofos--one has met death by pellet-gun in onion bed. So sad too bad, but blood meal = nitrogen and it'll heat up carbons in compost and generally deters most critters, just depending. (Hell I dug OUT the pecans in raised beds, put them in a guarded SAFE pile and if they're that hungry, just eat--but no--gotta rebury. Onion transplants slung hither yon. Not.) But blood or bone meal will heat it up, and with some exceptions, has worked for me.

Yeah Annie! I have been wanting to try blood and bone meal for a while now. I just dont know how to use it with my soil. I dont really have a critter problem. At least last year I didnt. I have seen some deer in my backyard lately. I dont know if they like pepper plants. I need some wolf pee to spray around.  The squirrels just like the nuts around here. There are a lot of oak trees. Or there were a lot before Sandy came through. I have some stuff like sod I dug up and still am diggin up I could toss some blood meal into. You are right about diggin things up by hand. OH LORDY i am sore from my rooter to my tooter.

As far as the bone and blood meal. Add it with your soil (during transfer.). It's long acting. So you won't see immediate results. As far as I was told

Bye. Got the seeds. Will sow a few of them when. My others have failed.
