stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

Well here is the list for now...If something you sent didn't make it I still have them, and will get to them some day. Momma is already pissed!

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Great update Shane and I can see you'll be busy this weekend with transplanting, dem roots, plants and leaves all look great!
Thanks Ramon! I do need to transplant them for sure...some will be moving up to the 5" tomorrow.

+1 on that. My plants are growing well at about 67 degrees upstairs and between 50 and 65 degrees in the cellar, but they're not growing as fast as yours Shane. The Annuums are slowly popping, but I'm having a hard time keeping the seed heat mat at a consistent 80-85 degrees and it's slowing things down. Once they're up in the lights though... they're coming on nice. I don't want them to grow too fast anyway because my plant-out won't be for at least another 6-7 weeks.
Think I am going to have to tweak my lights some more tomorrow...with the upgrades posted below I have many more going during the day than at night. Need to swap that around or they'll be cooking during the day.

I continue to be amazed at your skillz, man! Looks like time to do some up-potting!
Thanks Doc...I don't have too many skills, I just grow the easy way. I give mad props to those folks that maintain feeding schedules and all that jazz...mine are on autopilot.

Wow, freaking hell, Shane! You got the mad skillz!
Thanks Gary...the proof will be in the outdoor pudding. Hope I can keep it together after plant-out!

I don't know, Jamie, I grew Inca Red Drop last year, and the plants were very compact, not much more than 18" in height. If your 7' ginormica mystery plant is an Inca Red Drop, it's definitely crossed with something else. Maybe with one of Shane's monster Bishop's Crown plants?
The Inca Red Drop is a baccatum...your mystery is a definite annuum. Cool plant my man...I still say we name it and call it yours Jamie!

Woke up to the final straw from photobucket...now they want $$$ from me or I gotta delete like a gig of pics. So I am putting my extreme membership to use and using the gallery to post my pics...eff photobucket!

Got a lot done today...first off the bottom shelf lights weren't quite cutting it, plus they were not adjustable. Every time I wanted to move them I had to take all the plants out. disassemble their shelf and move the brackets up or down. It was a little under powered and didn't hit the outside plants very well so...

gallery_5729_82_1192302.jpg

59,600 Lumens...I can also adjust each side individually allowing for taller plants on one end...much better!

gallery_5729_82_1355793.jpg

While at the home store I found these 18 gallon totes planters on sale $5 each!!!

gallery_5729_82_3795579.jpg

Took a complete inventory of the peppers today as well...and posted some up for new homes. While destoying the leave carefully checking plant tags I noticed some coolness...

gallery_5729_82_2381220.jpg

Think they'll make it to plant out??? Ummm...maybe not. All I have on hand are 1 and 5 gallon containers...The 1 gallons don't offer a ton more room, but may be just enough to get me a couple more weeks...[background=rgb(209, 183, 151)]Yellow Billy Boy Douglah (SilverSurfer via Coheed via Romy6)[/background]

First super is about to open up a flower...well it may be the first??? I didn't see any other open, but they sure could be hiding. This one belongs to a Yellow Cardi Scorpion (Romy6)

gallery_5729_82_3945353.jpg

Oh...and there are a few of these guys hiding in there as well...Explosive Ember.

I have my current #'s, but don't have time to post them up...maybe tomorrow. For now a beer!
Hope your weekends are full of pleasant surprises such as mine!
Shane

Shane you are a growing BEASTTTTT. I cant believe the size of those things. Thats not normal. You have some concoction (sp) that we don't know about. I demand you tell us........ UGHHHHH I feel so frustrated...........
I know its tough when your plants aren't doing well...I really don't feed them anything yet. Only the MG soil they're in. Yours will come around. I have plant out in the next few weeks, but you have some time to get them on track!

Must be some of that agent orange you're using. Your rennie is like 20x bigger than mine
Yours look healthy though! Once they sink their roots into some good soil they'll take off.

I see you did borrow back the wire shelf idea :P !
I told you I was going to! We're all feeding off each other's good ideas! It sagged a bit in the middle but I added a chain there for support. May try to zip tie a brace to that side???

Those plants are freaking awesome Shane. Great work! I love how stocky they are.
Thanks mill, I keep an oscillating fan going 24 hrs in there. Plus the bigger ones have a clip on fan on their shelf. Greg warned me about maybe getting too big before they hit the wind, so I am trying to minimize the shock the best I can.

That new light shelf should be plenty now.
It sure is...blinding. I walked in there at 5:30 this morning and both shelves and the outriggers were all on...freaking brutal. Was like walking out of the matinee at 2 in the afternoon. I thought I timers down to ensure no overlap yesterday, but instead of taking a half hour off of each end I added.

Busy day today. Was debating going to the hydro store to get some 2 gallon grow bags, but I already had some 1 gallon containers so I went with them. Only really a couple more inches of soil underneath for them to fill in, but it should hold me a couple weeks to plant out I think. Here is what the roots looked like after just a few weeks in their 5" pots...
gallery_5729_82_2003650.jpg

Here they were yesterday...the roots needed more room, but part of the reason for the pot up was the leaves did too!

Trinidad Scorpion Morugah (Bakers Peppers)

gallery_5729_82_1647327.jpg

Here are some in their big-boy pants!

gallery_5729_82_2697989.jpg

A few more...the PI 438638 on the far left wasn't quite done cooking in the 5" so let him slide...Plus he's an "Extra" I will be getting rid of anyway.

gallery_5729_82_3610867.jpg

Rolled the dice on this Yellow Aji from PaulG...went into his final pot (10ish gallon) and leaving him in a spot on the back porch that should shelter from frost. I have two more that so I can afford to lose him, but don't think I will...

All the one Gallons went on the floor in the grow room with a little more room between them to let them fill in hopefully. I cut back my timers as I mentioned so each shelf gets 11 hours. I also changed the outriggers to run on the top shelf's schedule so that the floor plants will be getting light directly overhead or from the bottom shelf which is almost direct for 22 hours, plus that means less lights on during the day so it won't get too hot in there. I hope??? Never did put in the thermostat controlled fan...leaves me a project for next year I suppose!

Here are a few I didn't show you from yesterday...
gallery_5729_82_3015271.jpg

Here is another group pic...The Aji toward the far right is the one that got the 15" container today...

gallery_5729_82_672841.jpg

Romy's Mystery Pepper...this poor dude was sandwiched between the big boys and started shooting up like the Eiffel Tower to get some light. Checked its roots today, and still had room so this one stayed in its tray and I evicted its neighbors. Should start to spread out now...

Last but not least...I took some sage advice from wise man Rick and put my Vegas $$$ to good use...
gallery_5729_82_3489048.jpg

Bought me a chest freezer...all my venison and pods are in there already...Now I have the rest of this one to fill up and both of mama's are clean (for now) .

Have a great week folks!!!
Shane

Hi Shane... I thought you should have gotten another freezer instead of the T5s... unless you eat up some of that Venison, it'll fill up before you're halfway through the harvest... ;)

I told you I was going to! We're all feeding off each other's good ideas! It sagged a bit in the middle but I added a chain there for support. May try to zip tie a brace to that side???

Yeah, I knew if I put one more set of two, I was going to need some support. The thing I thought of was zip tie a piece of angle-iron along the length to stiffen it up.

There's more room in there than the pic shows...I'd have to almost double what I pulled last year to fill it. I am gonna take care of the rest of last year's pods and some venison next weekend!

What dirt are you using?
I know that they're dirty words around here...but I am using Miracle Grow Moisture Control right out of the bag. I tried a bunch of soils last year from cheapo to top shelf...and it outperformed them all. Plus with my schedule I like that its so fire and forget. I won't need to feed until late May...ish.

fantastic progress man, just fantastic.

Its amazing how rootbound and big your plants can get in that small pot.
Thanks kid!!! Those square pots are about 3/4 gallon, so they're not real small, but compared to the plants they look it.

I have some aluminum angle laying around out there somewhere...just have to find it. steel angle would make that thing weigh a lot. I'll find something. I only need to run that shelf for about 2-3 more weeks.

That mystery pepper from Romy - that's the one that grows like 12 feet, right? You're growing pepper trees. And those roots... nice!
I think his is around 8-10ft...but it is really bushy on top. I think it may be a cross, because I have two that look somewhat different. Didn't plan on keeping more than one of anything, but may have to make an exception. :shh:

Unplugged and tossed my oldest non-sprout tray. I have several more I am attempting to germ, but I don't know if they're gonna pop. While I was at work last week my son helped me out by checking for sprouts for me...when I got home Friday I noticed the probe for the thermostat was pulled out, so I think it may have cooked that tray running the whole time??? We'll see, I have more than I need already, but would like to hedge my bets on the Growdown Birgits Locoto plants a bit more...Bonnie and Annie your fate lies in that germ tray!!! Hope you two have some luck with the ones you're trying to start.

Aight really it for now...been needing to update the list for a while though...
Shane

:onfire:  awesome work on that MG... all looks well.. i will pass up on some of your seedlings... but if you can manage to bring them perhaps i can swing by thursday.. i know a few people that will be excited about the ones you are passing on...

Doing a yard sale this weekend, and I'm going to try to offload them there. Any that are left over will come up there with me the following week.

Holy Smokes,
Your plants are rooting big time ( opps I'm glad I reread my typo.....I did add an extra "o" to rooting) I'm amazed from week to week on the progress of your plants.

There's plenty of room in those 18 gal utlity tubs. Drill plenty of holes in them. Perhaps 16 -3/4" will do the trick. We had some one donating 48" pieces of heavy duty burlap at one of our district garden club meetings. The persone asked me if I need a couple.....I coughed, cleared my throat an whispered I take 40..........ha, and she ordered them for me. Shane I use to use an inch of "lava" rocks on the bottom for drainage, then years later the lighter cedar woodchips. But know I just cut the 48" piece of burlap into forths ...plant a 24" sq on the bottom and mix extra perlite in the bottom with the compost.........thats with the 18 thru 20 gal containers. The more dirt available...the bigger the rootzone.
Go...Go ...Goat Weeds...watch them Go......Go......Go
Those plants are going to be popping soon. From black pods to red..........thats before I can even plant mine outdoors...............ha

i'm liking these updates. The outdoor photos will be soon to come !

Greg...take a look at my list and tell me which ones should go in the big tubs...I also have several more 10 gallons to fill. I am thinking Manzano, one of my Birgits Locotos for the growdown and....dunno which others will need the most room to maneuver?

Came home to a few hooks...another Birgits Locoto (wayright), Poblano and another one of the Tepin crosses from sawdust...will post up some pics in a bit!

Here we go! First off, the Romy6 Mystery annuum has become even more puzzling.
8534385243_7148b91fd2_b.jpg

There are at least two phenotypes growing...will have to wait for the smaller ones to grow up a bit to see which they resemble, You can see the one on the left has a different growth habit and more nodes. A closer look and you can see....

8534383805_e849ebdfc7_b.jpg

The one on the left is slightly fuzzy but the one on the right...

Needs a shave worse than an 70 year old European lady! (no offense to European women)

Gonna be fun to grow these out! I was going to give a couple of these away, but I think I will keep them all now!!!

Mentioned the sprouts which were a great surprise...but even better were these!

Think this Goat's Weed is gonna have downward pods...which isn't what I was hoping for, but I really like the looks of this plant anyway!

Here is what four of the Birgits Locoto contest plants look like...
8534382393_9f772d483d_b.jpg

all my Chinenses stayed nice and compact under my light setup, but the baccatums all shoot up until they get true open. Gonna be growers!!!

Think its time to raise the lights again???

8534381243_21686a053c_b.jpg

a couple nons for ya...these are Red Robin Tomatoes, very small bushing cherry variety. Supposed to be good in containers...

8534381801_c8ef3150a4_b.jpg

and here is one of the Red Currant or "Spoon" tomatoes. Got a few of these guys going along with some Red Zebras which I though I snapped a pic of??? I think that is 10 anyway. Happy Hump day errybody!
