stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Shane. I hope the indigo grow true They were eBay seeds. Pod porn looking good. And look like a bright bountiful future for you. Hope also then rennies. And reapers grow well for you.

Whoa you got Cardi Scorp pods ripening already … dam I knew I should have grown a plant. Dem tasty little suckers! Everything looks great awesome breathtaking tremendous … keep up dat great grow and have a great weekend ^_^

STC quote cuz I'm on my phone and can't do it properly:

"I was so proud to have a couple flowers on this guy open up last weekend...Now look at him!!! HP22B Carolina Reaper(DocNRock) is about to load up! See those spider webs Pia??? "

I must MUST MUST remember to tread lightly. I got caught up in the pod porn and BOOOOM!!! Ugh I hate it when that happens. I sit here with The Willies for the rest of the night staring at the ceiling making sure nothing drops down from above. Yup. Like I need a tight jacket. SMGDH.

Plants are looking great Shane. I especially like your idea of securing the drip lines through the sides of the pots. Nice and simple and looks like it holds the drip line firmly. Sure beats my idea of little stakes to hold them down. They are always popping loose that way.

Did I read that you only water once every 3 days? Doesn't seem like a lot but your plants seem to be liking it.

Looking great Shane! This is just the beginning of another summer full of pods and updates. You have an excuse to win the page count this season.....

Those zebras are pretty cool looking as well. Those should look cool whenever they get ripe.

Happy Growing!

Plants are looking good

That Goatsweed is nice. I can see that bushing out and getting bigger in the future!

I have a bunch of them growing and I haven't really thought about it before now but my pods are green until they turn red. All the plants are in full sun but they never turn black, they also hang pendant and not upright. I guess this means I have a NOT. I have about five plants and all are the same so I guess the packet of seed must have been misnamed.
Thanks Mega! It's doing really well...as I answered over on your glog, there are several strains of GW out there, some with upright and some with pendant pods. They should all get black in full sun though.

I figured things would be kicking in for you with the warmer weather Shane, so I'm not surprised now. Crazy flowering and a few ripe pods is very cool! It gets windy here in spring, but since it doesn't get as hot just yet, it's not as much as your Santa Ana winds. If you're close to the ocean it's probably an onshore wind. Hopefully the fires aren't west of you.
Thanks Rick...I am pretty far off the water here in Poway in the foothills. We get the hot east winds...like their coming out of an oven. When we get them mid summer our temps will spike up to near 110 or more. Worst part is the single digit humidity and the chance of fires. Already starting...but its raining today. Sounds like a great thing in the short term, but that just makes the desert green up in the short term and add fuel to any fires later in the year.

Nice little harvest. You'll be up to your elbows in pods soon! At first glimpse I thought that manzano flower was a pod. I'm like, what! A wrinkled purple pube with a split tail? Where the hell did that come from? Then I zoomed in. Doh!
Thanks Dsh...the Manzano flowers weren't quite open yet...but they are now!!! Hmmmm, wrinkled purple pubes...nevermind.

dang dude things are looking huge and great! and clean your dang pool ;)hehe, those dogs look they want a little swim.
Thanks sic! They're happy for now...hope I can pull a couple solid harvests before the heat kicks...the dogs live in the pool year round. Part of the filter problem I have.

Looking good! Lot's of flowers on that Reaper, white 7 Pot, and that Goats Weed is going nuts..

Congratulations on the harvest, it's just the beginning
Thanks Scott...they're really looking good, still dropping a bunch of flowers. Low temps are still hovering around 50. Next month they'll be in the 60s so hopefully more will start to stick!

Shane. I hope the indigo grow true They were eBay seeds. Pod porn looking good. And look like a bright bountiful future for you. Hope also then rennies. And reapers grow well for you.
If they grow true that's awesome...if not that's fine too!!! As long as the flavor is good! The Rennies are trying to make a few pods stick...may come home to some pods next weekend...

Whoa you got Cardi Scorp pods ripening already … dam I knew I should have grown a plant. Dem tasty little suckers! Everything looks great awesome breathtaking tremendous … keep up dat great grow and have a great weekend ^_^
That pod is one of the first and is undersized...starting to set another wave. There may be 50 pods on that little plant!!! Thanks brother...hope yours was as awesome as mine was!

 Sorry lady...I honestly didn't even notice that web until I uploaded the pic. Hope you didn't have bad dreams. :hell:

Thanks! I got the idea late last year when I was out of the little stakes...works MUCH better. Those little stakes are worthless. I also tried using clothes pins to secure them...nope, that didn't work worth a crap.

Haha...doing my best, but there is a whole new wave of compulsive updaters that even the likes of me can't hang with! Hope the end or your tour ticks by quickly brother, keep your head down!

Well I planned on filming a vid today...but Ma-Nature had to help put the wild fires out with a rare late spring Socal rain! Kinda cool out there, but nothing compared to what the east coast and midwest are dealing with this spring...I did snap a few pics yesterday though so I will post them instead...

To start with I found this little hunter patrolling the bud forest of my Yellow Cardi Scorpion...

8710528223_c32b691f9f_k.jpg

Yellow Brain Strain...this is how most of the recently trimmed plants look now. Gonna be shrubs!!!

8710531161_b65b9f66eb_k.jpg

And here's a shot of her trunk...I really hope I can remember the magic formula I used to get the plants on such a great foundations next season!

8711632972_76d55cd882_k.jpg

Same type shot on the Yellow Billy Boy Douglah (Silver Surfer via Coheed via Romy6) I have skipped a few creds on seeds...but try to keep up with them, I really enjoy typing in this one though...nothing like a double via. I think that extra via is why this ones rockin!!!

8710515211_d1dd63afd2_k.jpg

The Manzano is now the fastest mover...think it finally said to heck wit dem dang bugs, I am moving on!!! Covered in flowers, and I think the earlier start may let me set a few pods before it heats up!!! I had to move/add a couple more stakes to this one. Got the ghetto tomato trellis thing working now. I really think with bamboo, 550 cord and some duct tape I could actually build a rocket...

8711641270_e95518f577_k.jpg

Here's a little better pic of an almost fully open flower on the Manzano...

8710513423_bec31563a2_k.jpg

Not the best pic of Romy's Mystery pheno 1...kinda blends in with the tree behind. It is already 5' tall and may overtake the stake by next weekend...crazy plant! I think we need a bigger pot! These are by far my tallest plants thus far. The other is just behind it at a shade over 4 1/2'...So glad I chose to grow these. If I keep them clean I will be giving out a bunch of seeds to these....especially this one. Like a Goat's Weed on roids!

8710514489_48ec68a5eb_k.jpg

Another token Porter is not impressed shot next to the Yellow Aji from Paul...another big plant that is finally starting to shoot up again. It is a solid 4'

8710532247_cd4b508a18_k.jpg

Here's the Fatalii seed that Andy sent again one week later...it knows I have my teacher's pets in the Indian Carbon, Mysteries and Goat's Weed...but its starting to push its way to the head of the class! Super excited, my first attempt at fataliis last year weren't true, so hopefully this one sets it right!

Oh wait...teacher's pets, almost forgot this one!
8711653802_4e263bd8f4_k.jpg

Belize City Scotch Bonnet from Greg...(Pic1) won't be denied either...close race between this plant and the Yellow Cardi Scorp from Jamie as to Chinense with the most pods. Ahhhh...gonna be terrible to have to pic a mess of each in the near future!

I realized walking around out there that there are a couple that haven't made the headlines on here...maybe ever??? They're out there though...and they're really kicking. So maybe next weekend I will have to post some of them up too!

Hope your weekends went as great as mine did!
Shane

Everything looks awesome, as usual! Love the look of those Belize Scotch Bonnets! Your stripping/topping experiment has me wondering if I should try that on a few of my extra. It sure seems to be working for you!

I am wondering if some of the smoke from the Cali fires made it here already. The wind was blowing hard all night, and this afternoon is was so hazy that I couldn't even see the mountain ridge right across from us, and it smelled like smoke. I checked around online and couldn't find any reports of a local fire though.

Plants looking awesome and the proof is in dem trunks … they are fat azz trunks mon, wow! Good luck on your bamboo & duck tape rocket and don’t forget the space shot pics, lolz … BTW love dat shot of the jungle around the pool \o/

Plants are looking great! I can see now you timed them just right, they were ready to hit the ground running and have done just that. That Scotch Bonnet is looking like it's ready to show some color.

Hmmm... wondering if Porter helps with the fertilizing? Haha!

Good job!

that Fatalii is looking nice and bushy! wow - again, I hope it grows true. I will say this, the ones I had last year were awesome plants, huge, nice and green - so signs are good for you.
Love the Manzanos too. Beautiful plants, tasty pods...

And the Porter jokes just do not get old for me.

All is looking awesome, Shane. Had to go back a couple of pages to make sure I caught all the updates. Did your overwatering issue ever get corrected on the one plant? You're such a slave driver, working those little puppies so hard on such a hot day pulling up that stump. ;)

All the plants are looking incredible. Especially love the 7 Pot White. Mine looks similar, with flowers bunched at all the nodes. The unripe pods are very pale green. Happy to see you are growing this variety, as well. Duffy doesn't believe there is a 7 Pot White and that these are just Giant White Habs. It will be interesting to compare pods from all of the 7 Pot Whites on the board and see if they truly have 7 Pot features.

Glad to see the HP22B doing so well for you. How is the Barrackpore doing? The mystery annuums look great, as do the Goat's Weed and the PI. Keep it up, my man! You're hitting warp drive! Glad to see there is no sign of the mottle virus this year!

EDIT: Just saw you had an update on this page, too! Nice. That BCSB is loaded up, man! And love the Manzano flower. Yellow Aji is movin on up and I think Porter is about to submit to the pepper forest surrounding the pool. Truly awesome growing, bro!

Just got finished going through your whole GLog...again.

Question, do you just thaw out the pods, throw em in the smoker and then dehydrate them whole?
I have an entire freezer full of peppers to mess with and I was wondering how you do it.

Will get to quoting everyone else when I post my weekend update(s?), but Matt has a serious question!
Just got finished going through your whole GLog...again.

Out of the freezer to thaw, halved or quartered depending on pod thickness. Seeded (some I do, some I don't) and stemmed. Then into the dehydrator, or the smoker for a couple hours then the dehydrator. Smoking can be a bit tricky, and undersmoked powder is still good. Overheated or oversmoked powder is not so baby steps until you find the sweet spot. I dehydrate the ones straight out of the freezer around 100 degrees to preserve their color. Out of the smoker the powder will be dark anyway, so I dry them at about 125. Keep them in there until they are all completely crispy. I hit them in the food processor for about a minute to get them close. If I am making a spice blend, or hot salt I add that to the FP...then into the dedicated coffee grinder for final powdering. If its a straight powder you're done, but if its blend/salt I run the whole batch back through both the FP and grinder again to make sure all the flavor didn't find its way to the bottom of the processor...done...start again with another batch!

That there is some great information! Thanks for posting it!!

Now I need to obtain a smoker :)

STC quote cuz I'm on my phone and can't do it properly:

Go to the pet store, buy a few house geckos (the kind that have suction cup feet), and release them into your house :)
No spiders or creepy crawlies will be lurking after that.
But you will have geckos running around loose...LOL

Just amazing growth my brother. Can't believe how tall the mystery plants are already  . One plant looks like it's mother, the other it's papa ;)

The pods that are growing upright look spot on to the mother plant. Can't wait to see how they turn out . And they should turn black on the tops( sunburn) just like a typical goats weed pod. Time will tell.

Have a safe weekend :fireball:
