stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Loved the video tour and the pics.  Bummer about the Indian Carbon, that was such a beautiful plant.  That Birgit is out of this world.  If it gets any taller you might need to rig up some lights to warn off airplanes.

Very nice Shane!

Today was remembered big time at work, all the classes showed videos of what happened back then. This should NEVER be forgotten, I remember exactly where I was that day and saw the south tower struck live on TV.

Thanks for sharing...

God Bless America!

...here is what it looks like up close. Little too heavy on the salt...so I am going to dry another round of pods to remix and put back in there. Still real good, but if you grind enough to get a good pepper flavor...its too salty. Works like a charm though, so it's just a question of playing with the mix a bit.

TXxj4Xg.jpg

Here's one that didn't make the cut earlier...this is another of the Peach Ghost Scorpion branches. After I got done potting it up I also used some 550 cord to tie the branches up in hopes the dogs won't snap them off.
Been working through your glog when I get the chance. Your glog mirrors you birgit.
And by the way, seeing that amazing shot of the birgit just makes me want to grow one, but I really do not need any more varieties. In fact, I'm trying to cut back then you pull that amazing picture crap. Unacceptable.

The peppers in the salt grinder idea is really cool. You could market that.

And those peach ghost scorps look great. Really cool shape on those. I'll be interested to see what you think of the taste (unless you posted that and I missed it already...)

Just looking at the shots of all those brains, and douglahs, and 7pots I'm kind of chuckling wondering what the heck you're going to do with all those. That will be enough heat for a decade. You've had an amazing year and great harvests.

Thats gross Shane........ But your plants are beautiful.  I have a feeling you are gonna win that Birgits contest.... Call it a hunch.  Killer season for an awesome guy.. Well done spidey pics and all.
Sorry...and thanks Pia! I dunno about the Contest just yet, my plant has a cold and John is coming on gang busters...Rich hasn't put a tape to his just yet either, so I ain't ready to call this one just yet. Win or lose, that plant did me proud!

Very nice Shane!
Great pull there too!

That Brain looks like it's ready to eat the Manzano.

Pia, those spidy's are a good thing. Anything that traps the bad guys is welcome in my casa! Well...in the garden..
The Brains are some of the strongest growers I got...I really love those plants...the Manzano is an even stronger grower...but more friendly to the digestive system! I love me some spiders! Pia is a big baby!

Fantastic stuff as usual, Shane. Loved the hell and heaven shot and the web of Douglah. Wonder how many stories Birgit will go? Already exceeded one. I got a feeling you have that one too, hon. Thanks for the entire plant web shot for Pia!

Pia, you surely don't have him knock down webs and kill in garden . . . but something tells me you do. I have this flooding/immersion in vivo type thing for arachnophobia. Only spider that worries me has "MITE" after "spider" but we can work with this! Am a fully licensed counselor and capable of bringing a ton of spiders to you for this exercise and we have to go at your pace, of course  Just kiddin' widya woman: everybody has a fear. At least your open about yours!
I think the Birgits ain't gonna get much taller...she's still creeping up there, but ain't moving real fast. Some BLS going around out there and I think she caught it. Hope she'll keep pushing a little, but at this point all I can hope for is the better weather here vs PA will hole off John.

Hmmmm...Pia in a coffin full of spiders! That would be some really funny therapy, but I don't wanna be part of it...trust me pia! :liar:rofl: There is a garden orb weaver that builds a web from way up in the sweet gum behind my fence and depending on the wind will often stretch at least 60ft across the pool to the container plants, 20' down to either the brain or manzano below. The heart of the web is about 12' up and she's a big girl! When I do my early morning walk through the garden and the sun is rising my better half says I look like I have party streamers trailing behind me...all webs. I like spiders...but wrapping a web around your face still makes you wonder where she is??? On my trail runs I am always the "trail breaker" which means I go out front the "set pace"...evidently set pace is code for web clearing.

And notice Shanes end of season photos has included not one spider at at time but multiple little baby satan spawns......I just cant Annie.  I think I would just lay down and surrender to God.....
Pia...stay strong, no spiders today, I promise.

Go Poway Gators brother. He looks like he is a beast. Gonna be playing for the Trojans in a few years I predict.

Plants look spectacular as usual brother. Don't think I could keep up processing all those chili's brother man.
Poway Gators are not 2-1...first loss goes to the tailback from the Temecula team. We beat the rest of them, but that kid was a one kid wrecking ball, running through tackles and faster than anyone on the field by far. Thanks...the plants are hurting a little, but still putting out more pods than I need so all is well!

Glad your enjoying the WB. I picked a couple hundred yesterday and twice
that unripe still for next week.
Everything is still crushing it, much like your son appears to be doing to those poor boys!
Thanks Jason! She's a looker fo-sho! I got the first real pull of the WB...and they're gonna do nothing but increase from there. Absolutely different than the Charapita which is awesome...my collection of wilds continues to grow. Another must grow!

Hi Shane,
Doing a little ketchup after a busy weekend... Everything looks great except for the ones that are telling you they want a rest by dropping leaves... Just like my Chocolate Habs. The Birgits and wilds look particularly good for you this year. I suppose the wilds will end up as either relish or powder... what's your plan for the Birgits? You're gonna have a jeezly amount of pods coming in from them, and if they're anything like the Omnicolors, they can take some light freezes and still keep on producing. Do you have any tiendas nearby that would be interested in buying your extras?

Foodies are looking good... you really pushed my buttons with the pic of the Huevos Rancheros... one of my favorite breakfast foods. When do you think you'll be switching over from picking to processing? At the rate you're going that'll probably be sometime in November!

Cheers!
I hear ya on the catch up brother...I have all but given up. I am so busy now that the kid's football has started that I only have a few minutes here and there to try to get into everyone's grows on here. Hoping to power through some stuff during the week...but even my work is crazy these days. Crazy times...
The Birgits are great pickled and I would imagine would make a great relish or paste. I also diced some to use in Guacamole which worked well...fresh salsas, especially sweet based ones would be a winner too. They have a similar flavor to the Omnicolors FYI...just MANY more of them. My Omni's only got a couple feet tall and about twice as wide...these have similar production on a plant that is pushing 11'...and three other plants between 6 and 8'...so I hope they work for mulch, because a bunch will fall to the ground...and I am sure to have about a billion volunteers next season.

More foodies coming right up!!!

Shane great pod, plant, harvest and food shots !
That Birgit is climbing up that stake faster than Boston Ivy...
The Huevos Rancheros  looks outstanding !......................finest chinette............ I'd,.. wipe up every last bit of goodness with another tortilla.
Ornamental bonchi..........for sure ! That will be a colorful one.
Gators in Poway ?........... :D
Your glog has inspired me to go home and water my garden..............once again...
That plant really trips me out...doesn't like the heat we're having, but we're finally getting a break from that. Huevos Rancheros are my favorite, but I won't order them anymore. There used to be a truck stop at the Airway Blvd exit in El Paso that had the hands down best HR anywhere. I made a point of stopping there EVERY time I went through El Paso...a couple years ago I was driving cross country San Diego to FL and pulled off the freeway to find  bull dozed lot...sad day.  Me motivating you in your garden is like my boy mentoring DeMarcus Ware on football...but get to watering!!!

Anyone wanna guess what's happening here?

50QLuxi.jpg

A couple more peppers to add to the collection! :woohoo: I kept the ones I am still trying to get enough of for powder and sauces....but a bunch of these...

x56vboM.jpg

Went to work with me for this month's Diversity luncheon...

f7Qt6Yz.jpg

Primo X...these things just keep getting bigger! Scary freakin pods...huh Matt?

bh3Txhd.jpg

Not to be outdone...the Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion is pumping out some scary pods as well...

This month is Hispanic Heritage Month, and I was enlisted to cook as usual. :drooling:  So...
8iYibXz.jpg

I took a page out of Ramon's book and made an Avocado spread with one of the Jay's Peaches, some fresh tomato, onion and garlic...HOT!!!

V8qcdv5.jpg

For the slightly less adventurous some Guac with Birgits in it and garnished with Birgits, Red Zebra and Charapita Yellows...big hit!

XDuzmps.jpg

Also some Carne Asada...

gJyYOxI.jpg

Not the best pic...but I think you can almost smell that goodness anyway!

Vb9RjGy.jpg

Here's the spread...in the containers are the Carne, some smoked then shredded chicken, spanish rice. pinto beans...and behind that big bowl of superhots is small bowl of Primo X powder with a big warning its hot sign next to it...no greater bait to a group of military meat heads than to challenge their masculinity with a caution sign...made for some fun moments watching them coat their tacos with the stuff! :rofl:Also made some really good Chili Con Queso with authentic Big Jim NUMEX's...always a winner!

Also not pictured are some awesome care packages from Rick and Vincent...Rick with his Blueberry-Chocolate Hab Sauce which is FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC. Wonderful sweet heat to that stuff...and some "Kitchen Sink" powder...which was AMAZING as well...didn't say smoked, but I tasted just the right amount and it worked well on my morning eggs two days straight...not overpowering, but powerful! Some amazing seeds as well pics to follow...
Vincent sent a great group of pods inclucing some crazy crosses...UBSC included which is one I have been dying to try and some Bahamian Goat along with some other great stuff...I took some amazing photos, but neglected to get them uploaded before I left for work this morning with all the cooking and loading the car for the party today...but I will try to get mama to snap some on her phone to send me...Thank you both for you generosity!!! Pepper people truly are the bestest!!!

Have a great week folks...gotta go, the on base store closes in 28 minutes!!!
Shane

To all the 9/11 tribute comments...thank you. I shall never forget...

Do grow the Birgits...its a variety anyone can use. It's spicy, but you can still snack on them fresh without hurting yourself. The Jay's Peach on the other hand...is not for everyone. Very hot for a peach pod, but sweet and delicious. The shape and flavor seems to have taken all the best of both worlds. The heat is a quick building extreme heat...no throat burn for me, but all over mouth that even attacks the inner ear. I haven't eaten a whole pod, but I don't imagine this one giving you too much in the way of stomach trouble. I used one medium sized pod in the spread pictured and it was VERY hot. A medium pod is freakishly huge though...very cool and another "must grow" variety. Saving some up, and hope to have a powder and sauce with them by season's end. The plant is stunning as well...and the fastest growing Chinense I have...it was started months after the rest of my grow and was a sickly looking nursery plant...I originally planted it in a 7# and after only a couple months potted up to a 10#...and it really needs bigger shoes again, but I am fresh out of bigger shoes and soil. You should really give them both a shot! I would gladly dump some of my other supers to make room for them...or better yet, just find more room!!!

Yeah man...crazy year. I don't mind the creepy crawlies as much as I mind the ones that mess with my plants...so I let 'em be!!! I left this pod out there until almost all of the little ones had drifted on the wind...then gently brushed the slow-pokes off onto my tomato plant. Never enough friendlies out there!

NICE!  The dip looks great, pods are amazing, and yea....that Primo X...nope.
Hahaha....I knew you'd think that way! Any super that size would be real trouble...much less that one. I picked some Monster Infinities that were bigger than those two Primo X's...some real pain growing out there this year!

  • Shane only SuperPodMon could be wrapping up a season with hooks starting up, lol…
  • Another incredible harvest, awesome looking guacamole both hot and for the faint of heart less adventurous … I love that latter touch, good thinking mon!
  • Home run with the Carne Asada looks incredible and we love making it too. So what’s the hot sauce upper right in first two meat pics?
  • Hope you have an awesome week :)

Oh...that old sauce???? Just something I threw together!  Made it on Saturday and by Sunday night 2 of the 4 bottles were gone. One of my first ferments featuring Big Jims and sweet corn from the garden with garlic and onion and a tiny bit of bourbon in there for good measure....very VERY nice. A sweet mild heat that everyone likes!!! I will be starting 4 more jars full of that recipe a big hit!!!!

Nice update Shane!

Pods galore!

Foodies looked great, the Carne, the dip, and the table layout.

And this made me laugh out loud at work:

no greater bait to a group of military meat heads than to challenge their masculinity with a caution sign...made for some fun moments watching them coat their tacos with the stuff!
 Loved it!

Have a great week!

Hi Shane,
Glad you liked the sauce and powder, and I'll be checking in to see how the seeds do for you next season. Bjarne said the BOC had a long germination time for him last year... about 28 days, so don't get discouraged if it seems to be taking a while to sprout. Lourens said that the Naga King was a lot more vigorous grower, so that should take a lot less time. Cheers!

Point man / Web clearer   you left out snake looker out for. We used to do Terrain runs, over the river and through the woods ;) when I was on active duty. Used to love them till you got a mouth full of spider webs and at 0630 it's hard to see them before your up to your armpits in them. Funny as all get out when it happens to someone else though.

Man that's an awesome harvest you have there. I'm going to have to check out those Brigits, they sound like a good saucing pepper.

Oh, and I agree with Andy on your pepper salt grinder. That's totally marketable. You could sell it as a Grinder and as refill packets. Sounds like retirement income source Brother :)
