stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Thanks Scott, Paul, Ramon and Jamie! Rickster...I have not grown any Dulces, and with that news...don't think I ever will!

Merry Christmas errybody!

Haven't been by in forever, but am amazed to see things still going at your place.  Your grass is actually green now, instead of brown, and mine has been white for over three weeks!

There's about 20 +  pages that I've missed, that I'll have to play catch-up on over the winter, but I just wanted to stop by and say Merry Christmas, and best wishes in the New Year!!!

Merry Christmas to you all too! Bonnie, I saw you posted that you'd be growing smaller next year...same for Ramon...and I have decided to include myself in that list. :mope:

It sure is fun watching all of them pop...then first leaves, buds, pods and then COLOR!!! It is just too much for me to handle being stationed so far away and having such limited time with the family as it is. I am going to try to keep a couple alive through winter and if they make it fine...if not oh well. I may plant one or two of the amazing wild varieties that John sent me. As far as the overwinters go, I kept a Pequin, Goat's Weed, the two Romy Mysteries and the big Birgits. Most should be no trouble up by the house, but the big Birgits will require some help from old man winter. Not uncommon for temps to dip to the low 20's here a few nights of the year...if we have more than a couple of those in a row she may be done for even with the frost protection I have put on her.

Final update of the season folks...its been a great year! Everything I planted this year at least turned the right color! Almost all grew true and the couple that didn't were pleasant surprises. Here are some pics of packing it in!

Thank you Nightshade!!!

A few that're stayin alive!

Explosive Ember...in desperate need of a haircut...moved to the back porch for some shelter.

Numex Centennial...also on the back porch for shelter now. Both of these will be Bonchi projects for next season if they make it through winter.

Growing like weeds...both of them! My son is now almost 5'11" and the Birgits...well she's up over 13' now. She has the Lights and a new sheer cloth draped over her head to toe. Fingers crossed she makes it through the winter. Would be really cool to see her up over 20'!!! Still creeping upwards in spite of the cold nights.

Porter is declaring victory as the plants are chopped down...

And here is the "final" harvest of the season...I still have a ton of pods on the Goat's Weed, Romy Mystery, Manzano and Birgits for winter heat.

Thank you all for the wonderful support all year...
Shane

Thanks for sharing Shane, and very well done! Your 2013 grow may have been a PITA towards the end, and was certainly a lot of work, but it was inspirational for the rest of us. Enjoy some free time with your family, and I hope you check in when you can. Cheers!

I'm not really surprised to hear that Shane. Your grow was so epic and your season is so long, you probably have a decade's worth of peppers in your freezer already. Same thing happened to me with a few select supers. The plants produced so heavily that the freezer is packed. My grow this coming year has many more mild and moderate peppers in it because I run out of those. Scorps and brainstrains though...I have plenty of those.

Awesome as always, brother Shane!

I'm pullin' for the Explosive Ember and NuMex Centennial to make it
through so i can see what you do to make them bonchis!

 Peace and Happiness in the New Year, my friend!

Very nice haul, and amazing plants. Look forward to seeing the bonchi conversion. Nice long growing seasons!

Thank you all so much...I don't know if  I will have a glog for the coming season. I may not even grow??? Just too much...one more year of only being home weekends ahead, then hopefully back at the casa on a more steady basis. I figured I would close this one down in style with a couple foodies from today's New Years meal...

Poppers and Chile Con Queso for mid day snacks followed by smoked Country Style and Baby Back Pork Ribs with Mustard Greens, Black Eyed Peas, Butter Noodles and Yorkshire Pudding...

Best wishes for wherever 2014 takes you.
Just don't be a stranger.

Fat Tire!!

Shane I just found this Glog and wanted to say THANKS for providing a brief escape from the hell that is Illinois winter (-20° tonight). I am amazed and impressed by your growing, photography and blogging...and the dogs are cute as hell too :) I can't believe the output you got, you have given me much to aspire to. Let me know if you decide to offer up any seeds...saw a few I'd love to try...IF it ever warms up >:( Have a great New Year...tell the kid to hit the weights all winter (my son put on all his muscle in the offseason).
