stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

Freak me . . . leave ya alone, go off to plant a garden come back to . . . DAYum!

Shane, some of these pics could be akin to Rorschach tests (maybe you could take to recruiters): I could see a green rattlesnake, almost typed "snack" smh, in the Barrackpore shot. Jamie's mystery is mind-blowing! A hummingbird at top would see the plant going concave from that height . . . Jazuz! Looks like a dang okra stalk! I got no comment but "yum to the hell yeah yum" on the ceviche--good reason to over-marinate "oops"--shrimp next grill :D lol, just drip-drool, and love the uh, bells, the ones you heard in ya head on that baby moruga, again, just ain't fair, ya warmth thar! ;) --just kidding--thank you for the early taste-tests on the moruga and CARDI! Also, I dunno about a lizard with tongue out but I see a spider. (Double-down on Pia! :P) I'm with Jamie: you got the GROW! The Goat's Weed: is on my list for next year thanks to ya glog! Did you get those seeds from Jamie or was that mystery/okra/red oak/Sears/WillisTower plant? Dang . . . yeah buddy!

Stunning!

Holy superMonpepperGrow … no need for ya to be waving any white flags here you gotz me beat hands down! Super pods, great pictures and awesome foodies, what more can a mon on diet ask for ;) Awesome grow and I tip da hat mon \o_

I agree with Annie, when I was going to cut back on less varieties next year you get me all stoked on dat goats weed you're kickin azz with! Have a great week brethren!

I have learned to master Shane's picture updates. Aahahaaaa. Well almost. I must admit I was a bit caught up and was off guard. Shane I started more Goatsweed cuz I didn't think mine was gonna make it. I was looking forward to this pepper too much not to have it this year. We will see

@ Mill...think you're right, and better yet I think Pheno 2 is actually growing true and just pheno 1 is the cross...I saved seeds from several of Jamie's mystery pods so I am fairly certain the second plant is true. Seeds for both when I get them will come your way. Only a couple weeks from ripe pods so PM your addy.

@ errybody else...I'll holla at cha'll later when I am not "supposed" to be working!

Woah!!! This place is full of porn. Those 7 pot white look interesting, first pod I see developing.

So is this gona be a full container grow? Everything looks outstanding despite them being in containers. I'm doing the same, I gotta visit more often.

Shane you got it going man!
While my glog has been misfiring on a few bad cylinders, ...checking out what you've been doing here has got me primed to get mine tuned up!

Man, your closeup photography has the detailing intact! Thanks for the shout out on the Belieze pods. The ceviche looked delish...If I had a cooler in my truck with some ice I'd be heading down to the fish market for shrimp, squid and scallops.

Wow! How tall is that Goat's Weed ? Dam if you don't pick off any chili's, the 1st batch could be sun drying on the plant while the 2nd batch is going through the color stage and the 3rd round flowering up......phew I'm dizzy thinking bout that.......ha

Thanks for shedding some inspiration !

Dang, your peppers are looking fantastic. The Manzano has to have my favorite flowers for a pepper. One of these years I will have to give it a try again.

That upskirt shot on your Goats Weed cross is awesome.. looks like a giant! I never noticed my Goats Weed went back to green before ripening. Good to know for picking green pods. Hope you get some gnarly pods on that Reaper now that they're setting. I see more smooth pods than not unfortunately. Your plants are at the stage mine usually are in August. I look forward to seeing how beast they get.

Shane, buddy!  Superlative grow you have going there, my man!
Great poddage, and plants over-the-top healthy looking.  You SD
guys are setting the bar pretty high!  I am going to show my plants
your pics so they will know that to do when the weather finally gets
good.  I figure we will catch up to you in about three of months - those 80
degree days sound really nice!  Although the warm temps can some-
times be too much of a good thing!

Of course, your foodies carry on your tradition of excellence,
as always!

Figured I would get a down payment on answering all the great posts on here before I make the trip home for the LONG weekend...

Nice update Shane, there are some great pics in there. The chinense definitely drop a lot of flowers early on. They seem to be pickier about ferts and especially watering. I snapped a pic of a couple spoons for you. These are average size,I have had alittle larger and smaller too.

Thanks John! Pic compliments from the master himself! My spoons are not spoons, they are all in the 1/2 to 3/4" range...oh well, I will search for a better source next year.

Watching your Goats Weed explode in full sun forced me to buy a black cobra I found at the nursery. I saw this thing calling my name, and my fiance wasn't there to talk me out of it. It's probably over a foot tall pretty bushed out, only $1.99! They also had really nice yellow manzanos in #1 pots covered in flowers, only $3.99. It got me thinking about how little plant growers must make if the nursery can charge that little and still offer replacements on plants that you kill.
Great buy on the "Black Cobra" I was given one last year after it had frosted back at a nursery. It made a come back and I eventually went on to call it a "Goat's Weed" the one I am growing this year is from some seed train seeds and is a little bushier, but the pods are the same. I think you're really going to love that plant! The large scale growers do it in mass in large hoop houses around here and grow 1000's of plants, so they can afford to sell for cheap. Part of my military base is leased to farmers that grow peppers...maybe 50000 anaheim plants!

Hi Shane
I'm lovin' the looks of that Goat's Weed. The contrast of the silvery fuzz on the plant and the black pods is pleasing to the eye. Nice sammich too... man does not live by lettuce alone... ;)
The Goat's Weed sure is a perdy one...mama texted me some pics of some ripe ones on there yesterday, that's when the contrast really kicks in! Fire engine red in a sea of black pods and silvery leaves...ahhhh. I really wanna get home!!!!

Nice work!
Thanks JJJ!!! They sure do....a day or so before red starts to pour in. Foodie pics'll be scarce 'cept for cheat days for a while. Training for another Ultra Marathon so gotta drop some LBs!

Thanks Jamison! I hear you may be packing up and moving south soon! Better growing weather down there so you get my nod of approval!

I can almost guarantee that mystery goats weed cross is a tree hab. That pod shape is unmistakable. Well as long as Jamie grew teee hab :). Great stuff shane!
I think you nailed it after looking through some (scarce) online pics. Hard to tell, but maybe Jamie can post some more recent pics once his has recovered from its recent defoliation. Red Tree Hab is a great guess, and really the only one that makes any sense thus far! Hope I have a few ripen this weekend so I can get a flavor profile...and some SEEDS saved for each pheno...

That's it for now, I have to go to a freakin meeting in a bit, be watchin what y'all got going on this weekend! Remember what the holiday is really all about folks...

Haha...you sayin my pods look like ink blots? The Barrackpore is one of my favorites...and HOT!!! Right up there with anything I've tasted so far. Hope to get some great powders from that bad boy! The Mystery X is a bug-un for sure...astounded by it's growth habit thus far, very Goat's Weedish, but growing MUCH faster. I gave them both some new 10+ gallon shoes (15" containers) so they should start keep shooting for the sky. I taste all my pods, and will eventually do some video reviews again... :fireball:  I've already set some Goat's Weed seeds aside, and mama sent me some pics yesterday of another dozen or so pods ripe so don't fret about finding any! The mystery cross seeds will also get distro'd to see where this cross leads, hoping for some ripe ones on both those plants SOON!

Fingers crossed, I think it may actually happen without any disease issues!!!  Thanks for the Barrackpore seeds, I am sure they'll be fatal fantastic! Would've been a nice addition to that sammie!!!

Vegas! Welcome to my grow! I hope I come home this weekend to more pods all around!!! Full containers this season, I had some viral issues last year, so didn't wanna take a chance on using my beds again. I may next year in a couple areas but then again I may wait another season before I do??? I had good luck with my container plants last year and went with bigger planters this year, so hoping for some big numbers again!!!

My grow has a few misfires in there, but I got no complaints at all...always good to hear from you. The shout on the BCSB is well deserved my brother! Can already tell it's gonna put out some huge numbers of tasty pods! Ceviche is one of my favorite diet foods...with the right pods in there there is no compromise on taste. I make big batches and eat the stuff daily...the goat's weed is already doing just that. I will be pulling though to try to boost numbers I am hoping that plant can put me on top of about a pound of powder this year. The goat's weed itself isn't huge, its cousin the mystery x goat's weed is the monster! if their flavor profile is close, I may be combining the two for several pounds of powder! You're the inspiration Greg!

Thanks! Manzanos are a cool plant, a bit tricky and temperamental, but the reward is worth the effort!

More later/tomorrow folks!

Looking awesome Shane.  Goats weed is a great plant ... only thing I found was that it was susceptible to Spider Mite compared with other varieties ... in fact it was the only one that suffered from Spider Mites for me last season ... still kept producing though.

Best of luck with the ripening process and pod production in the coming weeks and months
