stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I thought you were just letting half your plants run amuck, and the other half were sleepin' on the job! :woohoo:

Butt seriously....that must've been a hell of a blow!
I gotta ask, would you actually have ROOM for any more pods by now?
The short version (2 page) browse was all I had time for, so I'll save the rest for Shiner time this eve :shh: ......seems these people think I'm supposed to be workin right now  !

Have a good one-
DJ

Haha...no Dave, out of room. The Chest freezer is FULL. I don't mean almost there, or maybe a few more will fit...it is full to the point of having to weigh down the lid to keep it closed.

As far as the storm goes, I did just as Andy and John suggested and tipped over all the ones that weren't already over on their side and it limited the damage. I ain't sweating it too much. The big birgits stood tall, but did loose a little off the top. It was at 11' 4" before the storm and is back down to 11' now...gonna be a nail biter, think john will win for sure!!! Win or lose, I have had a ton of fun with that plant, except when it comes to picking. I didn't pull any off her this weekend, and didn't even finish with the wilds...I pulled everything else though, which was enough.

Here are some pics FINALLY!!!
ZPqxQkS.jpg

Here is the Birgits...that tape is at 11'

xZjnxwD.jpg

Picked a few Yellow Brains today...this plant has been the best producer out there and it's in one of the smaller (7#) containers.

x1qs0Kw.jpg

The Romy Mystery plants are still kicking and it appears the duct tape is working to mend the broken one. They're both really loving the cooler weather and shooting for the sky. Both plants are now up and over 7' and climbing. I just pulled a nice round and it's loading up again.

TTFGuy7.jpg

Here's one of the 4 wilds...the Wild Brazil that Jason sent me, and the main reason I got tired of pulling wilds today!!!

8EJMILU.jpg

White 7s are finishing up ripening this round...

IVingAT.jpg

and are loading up with more...

jwDHsUU.jpg

The Fatalii is loading up as well...hope these finish up before frost. This plant has made powder that has traveled the world. I sent some as far as the Netherlands!!!

KSH1QSY.jpg

How 'bout some of Greg's wonderful Belize City Bonnets??? Pulled a handful of ripe bonnets today too!!!

BPfZXTC.jpg

Naga-Reapers...

Giant Twisted Chocolate Habs (cmpman1974 via Pr0digal_son)

Few more with a bump...

Thanks Rick!!!

84 Yellow Brains!!!! Went straight into the dehydrator with these. Like I said above...NO MORE ROOM!

BXYBFOB.jpg

Here are some Wild Brazils...with some sweet snacking peppers to the Northeast a Monster Infinity to the Southeast and some White 7 Pots to the West...

PQCVxuw.jpg

The Manzano tree keeps on pleasing...

2lPR2R5.jpg

Blurry pic of some Primos, Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion, Bonnets and those White 7s peeking in on the side...

That's it for now everyone...banner year for sure. Dehydrator is working overtime and I have now lost that battle. Time for some heavy duty saucing!!! Have a great week everyone!
Shane

I’m not surprised by your plants booming comeback, I have no doubt you’ll be pulling pods thru Christmas unless you decide to 86 dem early. Fantastic photoging, beautiful pod porn and over all impressive year dat isn’t over … Great job and hat’s off mon \o_

Sad to read you’re freezer is full, put da kids to work again and sell what you can and gift da rest …

Just call me Rodney Dangerfield “I get no respect” as I made da same suggesting in post #1342 way before the credited posters o_O

Good luck with da Birgits, you have my vote and hope you win …

Got a great story from the Brain you sent, not sure which plant you picked from but it looks a lot like the one from Jamie (correct me if I’m wrong). I set some seed to dry from it on a paper towel on a window cill and either the boys got it wet or rain leaked in. Yesterday I went to pick them up and noted one was growing in the paper towel, lol, it couldn’t have been there more than 4 days … wow! So I planted her ...

Have an awesome day and week ….

If you can find the time, you might want to sell your overflow poddage to some of your local restaurants. That's what I've been doing... half of them pay me in cash and the rest give credit. I'll take either since it's nice to go out once in a while. This area is saturated with Farmer's Markets, so the restaurants pay more. It's a thought...

+ 1 idea, Rick. Every time I call our one authentic Mex restaurant; owner says to come up but I end up giving the things to wait staff and cooks for personal use because for some reason, owner's never there when I get there. No big deal but to at least get money or credit for gas. The FM's a laugh for sure, since all they've heard of around here is bhut jolokia. Had one woman ask me five gazillion questions about yellow 7's and yellow brains. Then she wanted a lb. of jals. Some other guy selling cayenne like mad says, "Maybe y'orter consider Asheville." Indeed. At least you all live in areas where might be average triple digit IQ.

1) The storm? Not even a speed bump I see!
2) What do think of those White 7's?

3) No contest, you win the tallest plant competition...at eleven feet, thats a Throw Up , Not a Throw Down- Nice work indeed!

4) Reapers with tails! Mine turned out like spiked up Bhuts...the damn hotel fridge actually froze a gallon of pods, normally they can't keep everything cold  ...
so maybe its time to test drive a soggy Reaper for "Bhutness".At least the smaller bag didn't freeze, and I kicked the temp up, so they should do fine.

5) PM your addy :shh:
Shiner Time!

Yes, I cleaned out my message box!

Great seed story...funny though, my seed rarely pops prematurely???

Great idea Rick...I had thought about the local farmers market, but not restaurants. Hmmmm...may have to give that a whirl!!!

Plenty of them out here, and we're regulars at one...I always answer the questions the same, "they're hot, be real careful" but they NEVER listen!!!  I think they outlawed triple digit IQs in Cal...or maybe it's just (un)common-sense???

Thanks!!! They're dropping down a little, but I think I will have a few really big pulls mid November!!!

Hopefully the winds are done and the cooling down should help the plants a bunch.

Have a great week!
Winds are down for now, but this is the Santa Anna time of year...so fingers crossed they'll stay away!!! Cooling down here is good for some and not for others. Problem with Cali is even in July and August when we're getting daily highs in the triple digit range, nights are still pretty cool and only get into the high 50s or low 60s. Night time temps now drop down into the upper 40s or low 50s but daytime temps are perfect. Some plants (mainly annuums , baccatum and pubes) love this time of year, but the chinenses aren't big fans...so a ton of blossom drop. There are enough pods on the plants that I should have really good numbers in about a month if we don't get an early frost.

Finally got caught up.  Sorry to see the damage from the wind.  You are the comeback kid so Im sure things are going just as strong.  love the pepper tree pics.  You are a growing beast.
Thanks lady! I am way behind on my own glog too!!! I have been slowly trying to get caught up on everyone else'.

Yes, I cleaned out my message box!
1) Yeah...the storm made a big mess, and cost me some pods. Good thing is I am all set on pods and won't be done powdering/saucing these until next year's grow is well underway. So no biggie!

2) The White 7s are one of my favorite pods this year. They've got a great slightly citrusy sweet flavor coupled with some realistic and usable heat right off the plant. It's a "no fear" pod you can cut up and eat with dinner without any worries about stomach trouble or overpowering the food. They're not the ones I'll be reaching for this year for the annual office chili cook off though. They pestered me into entering...and now they'll regret it. I'm not looking to win, just make it pointless and impossible for them to taste any others after mine. They don't even know what chili is out here...and even put stupid crap like beans in it???  :shame:  :snooty:

3) I dunno just yet...Pr0d had a freaking tree growing too...and dunno what the guru has up his sleeve but I am sure he'll show up with beast as well. The birgits is another favorite this year. Thousands of pods each pull, nice medium heat level in a sweet pod. I eat a couple each time I am out pulling them...and pulling them...and pulling them. I haven't powdered any yet, but pickled some and they're awesome! I am thinking they'll be a great base for a pork/chicken base rub or sauce. They also make a nice dinner pepper as a garnish that folks can actually eat!!!

4) One of my Reapers was Bhut or Naga like...it was "super-hot" but not the hottest out there. It had a much better flavor and although painful was edible fresh. The true Reapers are not as delicious as the hype, but are hot as advertised. Made me drool more than any other fresh pod I've eaten and as bad or worse gut problems as the Barrackpore which was the only previous pod to really mess me up. The Rennie and Primo X I have going are contenders in the heat and gut department too...

5) Headed to your profile now!!!

The ONLY reason I pay for the "extreme" membership is the bigger message box! 500 instead of 50!

Thanks again everyone! Sad time of year to be reading of all the folks already frosting out or pulling plants. It's been a nutty year for weather everywhere...and I am thankful for the few "speed bumps" that I have had. They pale in comparison to the woes others have been forced to deal with. I will be surfing glogs/threads heavy this week!!!

This made me smile.

I am probably going to try my white bhuts tonight and am hoping that I like them as much as you like the white 7's. Very pretty peppers and the white makes them distinct.

As far as going for inflicting pain as opposed to winning, that really makes me chuckle.  Once upon a time, when I was in seminary (about 10 years ago), I entered a chili cookoff and one of the categories was "hottest" and it was simply to make the hottest chili.  I tried to go hot and tasty and lost to someone who basically put tomatoes, ground venison, and some hot powder into a slow cooker.  One youth told me mine did not even belong in the hottest category.  I hold grudges.  This began what was for me a year of discovery as to how to make things hotter.  I consistently bought up all the habaneros at the local farmers market.  I also discovered Blair's 3 am hot sauce, which I donated plasma in order to buy.  There was no doubt who the winner was the next year.  teenage boys were daring each other to simply try a spoonful of my chili as a test of manhood.  The judges complained that they couldn't taste anything the rest of the evening.  It was a glorious moment when my name was called as the winner.  If things like superhots had been discovered, it would've gotten pretty ugly.  I only had orange habs and hot sauce at my disposal.
So I wish you the best of luck in making your point.  Sometimes a man just has to make a statement.

Well, It's 0830 on Friday and I started reading this Glog on Wed here at work and have continued to read it diligently at work the last few days.  Yeah.. I haven't gotten much done.. LOL

I continue to be impressed with the support and the honesty here at THP.  Finally some people that understand peppers (better than I do) but take it seriously instead of the "people" out there that eat peppers just for laughs.  I'm wanting to go through the steps of germinating, growing, harvesting and eating them myself.  No cheating because that defeats the purpose.

Great job and I hope that the Rennies pull through enough for you to have an amazing haul next year!

Hola!!! Sorry everyone, been freaking crazy lately. I will be doing some stuff out there today so stay tuned!!! Will be getting the "final" measurement on the growdown plant too!!! I am also going to be trying to gather up some stuff to send out to folks that have asked. I'll be back in a bit...once the sun comes up!

OK OK...here we go! A few pics of what I got going on...
QKsU2dE.jpg

Got some Romy Brains out there ready for pickin!!!

hsu6Tfj.jpg

And a few Primo crosses...

dVYf6Kw.jpg

couple Douglah's...ready for Halloween!

8EuuxzY.jpg

...pods are a little smaller these days, but plenty potent. This is just one branch on the Mystery Yellow...

vnQGlJC.jpg

Big Jim's ain't so big this time of year, but they're making up for it in numbers...

uVxPzLU.jpg

Most of the plants look like this Belize City Bonnet...loaded with immature pods. Hope they make it to the finish line!!!

EzSel1i.jpg

Same thing with the Giant Twisted Chocolate Hab...loaded up, but just a few starting to show color.

x2PHva6.jpg

The Manzano is loving the cool weather, and is covered in pods at all stages...ripe, almost ripe, halfway to ripe and tons of new pods forming every day. Unfortunately most will not make it to ripe.

zkINIQt.jpg

Here are some newborns...lower left are a cluster of Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon's that volunteered. The rest are Bubblegum's that I planted to test germination rates with...and yup, percentages are really good! I will carry these to work with me to attempt to overwinter outside. "Frost free" zone up there, but I don't know how immature plants will like the cool temps.

Last but not least...
HHY2I8n.jpg

The Birgits got what may be it's final measurement today11' 3" I don't know if it's enough to win, but either way I sure am proud of this plant!

I may post some more in a bit, got to do some harvesting and packaging and drying and saucing and cooking and.......

Alright! Helzapoppin' at Casa de Shane! Not surprised to see pod size diminish as the light becomes less intense, but sure like to see all those ripening pods. 11 foot 3 inches is a monsker for the Brigit... if anybody tops that, I figure it'll be by mere inches or less... Great job Chief! Will you be giving chile treats to the adults that take their kids trick-or-treating? Last year I gave them woozies of my fermented sauce. This year it'll be little packets of my smoked "Kitchen sink" powder... :hell:
