Well...down to 2 seedlings (Peruvian White Hab, Aji Amarillo) and 2 sprouts still just coty's (both Scotch Bonnets) remaining under lights...everything else is outside. Tomorrow the germ tray will be turned off..I will place the remaining unsprouted jiffy pellets outside in a warm spot and keep them moist just in case a straggler decides to join the party late. Only reason the germ tray is still plugged in is a flat of Okra I have in there...4 of 6 are up, willing to bet the other 2 will be up tomorrow. Once I pot the two little Scotch Bonnets up to 3.5's THAT IS IT FOR THE LIGHTS!!! Gonna be a bitter sweet day. I need to count my plants. I have no idea how many I have out there???
The big Jims are going to remain in the 1 gallon pots until the roots fill them, I prepped and filled two buckets for a couple of them today so their home is ready for them when they are. I also installed the drip heads for all the new in ground plants. I still have two lines to run. One for the bed where the ghetto greenhouse was and the other for the containers so next weekend will be a busy one.

Nothing to do now but wait and water I guess...

These guys are going to a new home tomorrow...

They include a Chocolate Habanero, Bhut Jolokia, Mucho Nacho, Manzano, Jalapeno, Cayenne, and a Trinidad Scorpion...going to my brother and sister-in-laws house in El Paso. Her Family is from Mexico and think they know hot... :hell:

Fatalii...this is just the bottom half of the guy! I almost killed this dude at least a half dozen times throughout my grow. Continues to impress in spite of a few pests...

7 Pot Primo...

Great Easter on this end...hope everyone reading this can say the same.

Night all!
Shane

Great Easter, indeed! Went to our peruvian friends house for dinner - ¡todo peruano!
Giant jalapeños stuffed with shrimp and white cheese, lamb, purple and white potatoes,
White preuvian corn with bean salad. Woah, I'm stuffed.

Your grow continues to impress, Shane! I always enjoy your updates!
I'm hoping to be where you are at in about 4 or 5 weeks! By then you
should have a jungle!

Good growin' my friend!

All I know is that clearly, I didn't start some of my plants early enough... My annuums are huge of course. but my Chinense are no where near the size of yours shane (well other than the O Habs I started in oct with the jalapenos and cayennes).

I'm hoping in 5-6 weeks I have a jungle my self. we'll see :)

Wow that fatali is rediculous!!! Other than where you are lifting the leaves you cant even see stem! Insane. That thing is nothing but solar panels. Congrats on getting to kill the lights! I think im atleast 2 or three weeks away from that. Did you get a final count on how many plants you got out there?

Yeah...gonna be a week or so over here to for the lights. I just germed some Scotch Bonnets that still need to get some true leaves and transplanted before I can shut them down for good. Only got a couple CFL's going not though...

Final plant count is 93 including the ornamentals. 83 without. I have 12 more that we're going to sell off and I have given 15 away. Tempted to keep 7 of those 12 to make it an even hundred...hmmmmm.

You should start most of your stuff in December I think...but next year you will have a bunch overwintering right?

Ya can never have too many...
I would like this...but I guess you can have too many of those "You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day"

Just went back and looked...most of my supers went in on 6 Jan most of the rest went in on 25 Jan. Then sporadic additions after that as seed trades and trains came by...still need to crunch the list and give credit to the kind folks that sent the seeds.

Just had another one of the Scotch Bonnets that Matt sent me pop this morning... I unplugged the germ tray last night..lol

While out and about I found this pretty lady patrolling on one of my Bishop's Crowns...

P1000768.jpg

Hope she likes aphids!

P1000769.jpg

Also found an open flower on my Annuum Scotch Bonnet. This plant has got some really cool growth. Huge tree trunk stem with a couple triple branch outs and the one pictured grew with the two stems fused for a couple inches. If you're reading this and have any experience with the annuum bonnets please fill me in on how they taste??? Looks like they're going to produce a ton of big pods!

and finally for one of the non peppers (weeds)
P1000770.jpg

Here's my cherry tomato. I had already picked one when I decided to take a pic...right now I can't wait for a few more to ripen, but it won't be long till I have so many I won't want to pick them all. Last year my dogs decided they liked tomatoes and every time I went out to pick some, the ripe ones were all gone. This year I left 3 plants where the dogs can get to them, and kept 3 out of their reach. I don't mind sharing.

Almost as hard waiting now for pods to form as it was waiting on the first couple trays to hook! Have some rain and cooler weather in the forecast for the rest of the week. This one will keep daytime temps down in the mid 60's which will be fine, and with the cloud cover the night time temps are going to be maybe a bit warmer. I haven't watered in a couple (80+ degree) days so they should be ready for a drink anyway.

Hope your season's are going well!!!
Shane

So before I get around to relaying how pissed I am at Jamie right now for this commemt...
The brains are not much hotter than the red 7's so you should be just fine.

Ummm...yeah. I'll explain in detail how I feel about that in just a bit!

But first, I don't pay too much attention to my ornamentals because they just kind of take care of themselves, but I figured I would include them on an update. They are all some variation of Thai Hot Peppers...enjoy

P1000777.jpg

Take that Jamie! You're not the only one harvesting on here!!! Ok...so they're not too much to get excited about. The larger ones and the two round ones up top are surprisingly good! They have the heat of a Serrano...ish. The others are off two different type plants and while they have good heat and flavor, they are a bit tough. They all dry very well and make a tasty flakes with a good whole family heat level. I have them in the dehydrator with some Manzanos now...should make an interesting combo. Manzanos must be sliced into very thin strips or they will dry to a raisin like consistency. Even thin slices you will come across the occasional chewy bit. They add such an amazing flavor I don't mind a little chewiness.

Down to business...I sat down to dinner (beans, rice and cornbread) with the full intention of punking out and just eating little bits of Jamie's Brain until it was all consumed. I once again sliced the pepper in half stem to tip and took a peak inside. The way I cut it most of the placenta happened to end up on one half. I took a deep wiff....WOW! It smelled really mean, I manned up and ate half of the part with the placenta in it. BAM! Right out the gate it punched me in my tongue. It wasn't horrible though...so I ate the rest of that half....I didn't time it, but I tried to stick to the chew for 30 seconds blah blah blah...I got about halfway done with that time limit and said Efff it and popped the rest in there...before I got done with the 30 seconds of chewing I realized what I had just done. I swallowed and the throat burn was instant...the tongue and the roof of my mouth were now on fire (I thought). To avoid any further ridicule from Jamie I decided to look at my watch and do at least 5 minutes before I ate/drank. OK folks once again if you've never done this...you won't fully understand the explanation. Not saying I am some sort of BA...just that unless you've been there words just don't do it justice.
About a minute passed and then the heat REALLY started to kick in. I leaned my head back in my chair and closed my eyes trying to find my happy place...nope didn't find it. Instead I started violently hiccuping and when I did some pepper/saliva went up my nose. OMFG...that brought tears, coughs and even a few dry heaves. It also started a snot river running down my face...Looked at my watch 2 minutes! ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME!!! I grabbed a napkin and tried to keep up with all the bodily fluids pouring from all sorts of different places above my shoulders. I was sweating profusely but the hiccups had stopped and the nose was feeling better...no more tears in my eyes...looked at my watch again 4 minutes. The worst had passed...and I was coming back down to earth. 5 minutes finally passed and I started to eat my dinner...every bite of the beans and rice set the fire in my mouth off again...and again...and again.

Must say the flavor once again wasn't that good...to me. Tasted like the bad part of the chinense flavor just super concentrated. I didn't notice a bitter aftertaste with this dude like I did with the 7 pot however. So I can see some great recipe potential. Definitely the hottest thing I have ever eaten...so far. The heat was a little deceptive, it hit sort of hard out of the gate so you think its done...but it isn't. It continued to build for about 3 and a half minutes before it leveled off and started to come back down around 4 1/2 or so. It then subsided pretty quick and didn't leave me with pain in my stomach which some pepper do, 7 pot included. I've done a lot of crazy things...and I consider myself a pretty tough guy. I've run 4 marathons, one barefoot...I've even run 100 miles nonstop over steep mountain trails at over 220lbs losing all my toenails in the process. I'm here to tell you this pepper is pretty painful...so I like it!
So glad I found a way to get all the endorphins...with so much less effort!!!!!

Hope you enjoyed it!
Shane

...and didn't leave me with pain in my stomach which some peppers do, 7 pot included.

Spoke too soon on the stomach issues. Didn't feel any real discomfort with this guy until I layed down to sleep. Woke up still tasting it and a pretty good burn going. I ended up sleeping in my lazyboy to keep things down then was fine. Re-learned another valuable lesson to, chili heads should alway wash their hands before and after using the facilities! lol
Hope you guys are having a great day!
Shane

Looking absolutely great Shane!
The growth rate with your plants outside is pretty nuts! Nice Fatalii! You'll enjoy that plant, it's one of my favorite to grow.

Great BrainStrain review!
LOL at your relearned lesson.
Brainstrain balls sound absolutely horrible!

I'd ramble some more but I gotta head to work! wanted to give you a shout.
Hope all is good with you and your family.

Brandon

Shane once again you had me smiling from ear to ear  . I can't believe you ate the whole thing at once :hell: . It took many several months to even get up the balls to eat a whole brain in one setting. You are a brave man. I agree it has a strong chinese flavored that I have learned to enjoy. At first it was overbearing but now I use them with other spices and it is great. My wife can eat whole pods fresh but they make her ears ring and major hiccups . I prefer them cooked with garlic and olive oil and some fresh dill. Grilled to perfection. Anyway thanks for sharing your experience. It made my day.
P.S.
Nice little harvest. Not bad for a west coast chilihead. LOL

awesome blog shane.... wish i had a head start on planting peppers.. i didnt get to start until mid march so lots of the ones i had i purchased from an arboratuem and from Melissa..... send some pods this way so i can get a taste ;D

Enough of all this plant stuff...How about some Manzano/Thai Hot/Yellow 7 Pot powder...
P1000779.jpg

These guys spent the night in the dehydrator...came out with a dried banana texture for the Manzanos the others were more like potato chips...

P1000780.jpg

added a little of this and a little of that and hit it for about a minute with the freshly sharpened blades...

P1000782.jpg

Voila! This stuff is fantastic. The first time I tried to dry Manzanos I just halved them and they took forever and still came out a little chewy in places. This time they came out perfect. This combination looks and tastes almost like really spicy mac and cheese powder. Mmmmmm

Looking absolutely great Shane!

Finally starting to see some improvement from the pest problems. Hard to see past the ugly, but they're all really starting to take off with the secondary growth. I now have buds on pretty much every plant....just a waiting game for the pods. Tic..........toc........

Jamie...glad my pain made you smile. Really wasn't as bad as I thought. It was quite a bit hotter than the 7, but didn't seem to last quite as long. I like the chinense flavor, just not so intense. I really enjoy it when added to sauces, flakes and powders. Think those two are earmarked for BBQ sauces, should be a good fit. When I get the flavor just right you can expect a bottle.

Great to hear from you again KiNG! I only have a few ripe Jalapenos and Thai Hot ornamental pods...nothing worth sending. I think I heard about that arboratuem sale...OC or LA right? If so I saw the list of available plants, they had a really nice selection! Where you at in Socal? I live in Poway and work in Seal Beach...

Thanks for checking in guys!

Looks like a variety of crab spider. The ones we have are stalkers. Nice hire.

Your update had me smiling, as always. Such nice stuff. And then it was like,
"Oh here are some freakin' outrageous ornamentals I just happened to kick out
the door a couple of months ago, I guess they are ok" comment to make me feel
like .... warmed over :D

It's all too cool, bro. You are the egg mcmuffin of pepper growers!
