STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Still waiting on the supers...but the rest are sprouted and under lights. This will be my first attempt at supers. Fingers crossed. I am so lost in the labels. I don't know how some of you keep them all straight??? Aight...so I am officially out of superhots. They were fun and interesting while they lasted to say the least!

Had a busy day of changing oil, charging batteries, inflating tires, and weed & feeding the lawn. Also accidentally dropped a few dozen ornamental/wild seeds in some soil...damn the luck! I dunno if they'll pop or not with the cool nights, but they're in the ground none the less. I "accidentally" dropped some explosive ember, Tri-color Variegata, "mystery" black which I'm hoping are black pearl, and some unique Tepins from Frank (Sawdust) down in Tx. Hope they all come up! Lol...that'll push me WAY over 100. I mainly wanted the different ornamentals for future bonchi's and to accents around the larger plants with some color without having to plant any more weeds for the wife. She's finally decided she prefers looking out the kitchen window at my ornamentals than the Kale and flowers I had out there for her before.

I finally got up the nerve to do a super hot video review. I chose the 7 Pot Barrackpore because it was the only pepper Jamie cautioned me about, and for good reason. Not as hot as the Brain Strain. Maybe a little hotter than the regular 7 Pot, just not as large thankfully...I did the review as I attempted to maintain composure and do a garden tour at the same time. There is about a 1 minute gap in the vid due to running out of memory, it was as the heat was peaking to, I got back on track quick enough that there is plenty of my discomfort for you to...enjoy??? :onfire:
Well that's it for now...probably not going to post up any photos of the plants for a bit. I got a couple weeks of good weather inbound, and really wanna save the update for some good progress, plus uploading this video has taken the upload fever out of me for a bit...

Thanks again Jamie for the awesome pods! They were an adventure in a box.

Take care errybody!
Shane

Another "Rockin" video!
From Brandon's to yours Shane.........keeping me busy tonite, I've gone through a couple of "Warsteiners" watching these. All I'm missing is the popcorn with the chili powder and lime on it!
I hope that brew was still cold by the time you opened it,...... man, small pepper or not I bet it had a bite.
It looks like your plants took a trimming from the hail storm. They'll all bounce back two fold. Its the dents that a car takes that don't bounce back. Hope all is well outside of your plants.
I had an overwintered "Goats Weed" that was doing great until I put it under the Metal Halides. The leaves began to fall and its recovery was slow so I replanted some new seeds. It is a pretty cool looking plant that stands out amongst the others in a pepper garden, and it taste pretty good too!. You just have to let the chili's ripen from black to red.
Well time to get one more brew, works only a few hours away..................
later.........................................when you have 19000 views!

Greg

Its funny you say that pepper tasted like soap and citrus... I have ALWAYS thought that Blue Moon tastes like soap. Maybe that flavor was coming from the beer you were drinking rather than the pepper :P

The plants look awesome despite the hail damage, good luck with the rest of the season.

That was a manly attempt at a BarackTour! Damn some of your plants look like they got hit with a shotgun blast! You sure you live in Socal? But your right im sure they will make a full and quick recovery. Glad to hear you got good weather coming your way! I think we got another 5 to 10 days of crap before we crawl out of this weather cycle.

Thanks for stopping by Greg! I drink most of my beers at room temperature so that's not an issue. No dents in the car thankfully...well I haven't looked real close either. I rescued that Goat's Weed after it frosted back at a nursery. It came back like gangbusterser. Then the leaves started to get a mottled yellow color. At first I chalked it up to my pest issues, but then noticed it was on all the leaves. I have 3 more that I started from seeds out of the pods that remained on it...one has already passed that plant up growth wise and is putting out some pods. They are delicious with a nice kick. Between them and the Cayennes I sould have some pretty tasty flake all Summer!

I thought about that after...and I think maybe the orange that I tasted was the beer. The soap??? I don't drink Blue Moon, but it was left in the fridge after a get together we had a few weeks back. I decided to drink it with the pepper because the Commander in Chief drinks it and this pepper carries his name...lol

Manly I am not sure of...leaning more toward dumb&$$ I think...The plants are pretty damn beat up...but they'll recover. Looking forward to the 80ish degree days for the next few weeks. Should really change things in the garden.

Thanks again for the looks fellas!

Thanks for the video Shane. I know how those uploads can take! The first barrackpore I ate was about that size and everything was nice till it hit my stomach. Needless to say I laid on the ground for about 15 minutes till I could manage to shake it off. Not sure why it got me like that . nNw when I eat them I make sure to cook them real good and never on a empty stomach!

That really sucks about the hail. Damn global warming :tear:

Jamie

Sorry to hear about your horrible weather. Good thing it didnt take all your peppers out. Ive lost plants to nature many times. Best of luck from here on now.

Didn't really get the size of your manzanos until this video, they look great compared to mine. Some of the lower leaves ona couple had something going on with them so I cut some of them off.

Other than the hail damage your plants are looking good. I'm noticing that my plants are starting to get more and more aphids so the watch is on. Hopefully when I go to the ground I don't have too much bug problems, but onnly time will tell.

Anyway, can't wait for the next update. :P

You wield the knife like surgeon, doctor!
The plants probably really love it!
More like a kid with a plastic light saber...but thanks! I hope so...I really need to stay out of the yard for about a week and just let them alone. Every time I go out there I pinch/prune and hack all the ugly I find...I should really let them do their thing for a bit. The 10 day is still calling for 70's to mid 80's every day...and even better night time temps above 50 which is June weather for us. I can already see a difference in them and its only been a few days of really good weather so far. Was really hard to not take a pic of the open flowers on the Wild Brazils...very cool looking. Gonna wait though!

Stomach bothered me with the 7 pot but not terrible, the Brain gave me acid reflux type symptoms when I laid down so I had to sleep sitting in my easy chair, the Barrackpore made me a little uneasy about 30 minutes later at the grocery store, but it only lasted a few minutes. I am addicted to pain, which is why I do the ultra running/cycling stuff...I am pretty sure that's also what draws me to these peppers. Although I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor of most of those...I can't wait to get ahold of another!!! Won't be long and I'll have some going here. Thanks again for feeding my endorphin addiction!

There are damn few times when anyone can complain about San Diego weather...I think what frustrates me more than the hail is watching folks in Idaho and Chicago enjoying warmer weather than me in March and April!!! Good for them, but this whole global warming thing hasn't hit socal just yet. I work up in the OC! Let me know if you need anything!

They're pretty tough plants! Very fast growing to! They say well over 100 days to harvest on them though...I have buds on both of mine, so they must just take a long time to ripen I guess??? I think that they're going to be able to easily overwinter in ground here without too much work.

More and more open flowers on more and more varieties. I am making several of them basically start over on their leaves. Although I can't wait for pods, first and foremost I want healthy plants. The annuums are really doing well. Even the ones in the soggy/chlorine filled bed are really making it look easy.

Here's a question for all you fish fert users...If I mix up 2 gallons, how many inground plants should I be able to feed with it? I have just been pouring maybe a pint on each plant once a week at full strength. Should I really give them a soaking? I have noticed an improvement since I started feeding, just don't want to overdo it.

Thanks for looking in again guys. I will update once things start to move out there.

The Alaska Fish Fertilizer folk say 1 tablespoon per gallon of water per cubic foot of soil. A cubic foot is about 6.43 gallons dry, so a 20 gallon container would be about 3 cu feet, or 1/9 yard. That would be a lot of water to pour in all at one time, to my thinking; that would be a gallon of water in a 7 gallon pot. I usually mix a gallon and just water the amount I think they need, so I probably am killing my plants :D. Actually, I have traditionally mixed it stronger and watered every two weeks and had no problem with over feeding - not with any hot peppers beside serranos/jalapeños, however. Your pint per week full strength should be okay, I think. Good luck getting it dialed in!

Thanks Paul!

Funny, those pods I ate really handed me my a$$, but I am now craving one. Addictive hobby we have...

Been a rough week. I am taking tomorrow off...I know I promised no updates for a while, but I may not be able to resist. I have first pods set on the Annuum Scotch Bonnet, Tepin and Wild Brazil and tons more flowers open or opening, my smaller pequin plant is stacking on the pods as well 5 or 6 set and many more open flowers won't be long and I will be tired of picking the little guys, and new open flowers all around the garden including my Aji Omnicolor. Some more good news, the flooding rain followed by a week of dry heat has the annuums that got extra swamped by the pool overflow going off! I have new pods on my Poblano, Bell, Anaheim, Cayenne and all my Jals. The supers all have buds...but most are still dropping...this warm swing is pushing them closer though. I went to town pruning many of them this week. The top growth and leaves were so decimated by the bugs and hail I just removed most of them to let some light get to the lower growth which is looking nice and healthy. They have grown a ton this week in spite of their ugly. Hoping the start setting some pods in a few weeks.
Not too far off from a nice harvest of my annuums.

Once I get some powders ready I will start some care packages up. I enjoy the cooking almost as much as the growing. Should have some really great sauces to share later as well. As per Jamie's recommendation I have purchased some Bonide Citrus, Fruit & Nut Orchard Spray. Sulfur 10% and Pyrethrins .25% fungus/insecticide. Claims it's the bomb diggitty...The neem has been helping to keep their #s in check, but not finishing them off...I WANT THEM FINISHED OFF!!!

If you made it this far, thanks for checking out my glog and reading my book!

Have a great weekend everyone!
Shane

Hey Shane your plants look great besides the bug damage, but the Bonide is awesome it really help prevent any further damage on my plants from the aphids. Can not wait to see your next update. Good luck through the crazy weather, but the coming two weeks look great or supposedly by weather.com news.

Shane, glad you have decided to blast those mo fuggers. Brandon is the one who turned me onto the Bonide so I can't really take the credit on that one.

Funny how you start to crave something that causes so much pain.

Have a great weekend!

Just dosed them all...what made me decide to go with it is I got some fungal stuff going on. Its mainly on some of mommas plants. The hibiscus especially, but a couple peppers had some black spot stuff that looked troubling so I needed an antifungal as well. Good to shift gears on them little SOB's so they don't develop a tolerance to anything.
The plants were already recovering nicely, and inspections would only find one or two aphids garden wide. The broad mite damage was also slowly getting grown over. I also started a more aggressive feeding schedule so hopefully this it the ticket to pull them the rest of the way out of their funk so we can start getting some pods to set! Funny, last year was all annuums, but the only pests I had were some horn worms late in the season, but I did get a very late start due to travel.

Going to post some pics later today. There's some great stuff going on out there. So my bipolar season is on another upswing...

Yeah...I've heard that before! Last night was the first time in a while we actually stayed in the 50's at night. Hope your grow is going well to brudda!

"Honey, I have no idea what these weeds are that keep springing up near the compost heap where I have been tossing the dried out ornamental peppers...but don't pull them!"

Hmmmm....funny how they all grow in nice pod sized clusters??? About 40 of these little "weeds" so far to be exact...I definitely have some weed thinning to do.

Careful...they're guarded by killer attack dogs! I'm running a 50 mile ultramarathon that weekend along the Pacific Crest Trail out near Alpine...painful.

Another Update...

Aji Omnicolor

P1010161.jpg

Annuum Scotch Bonett

P1010160.jpg

Tepin...these things are going to be tiny even by tepin standards! Notice the discoloration on the leaf in the lower right. Several plants have this going on. Hoping the Bonide knocks it out!

P1010162.jpg

Wild Brazil...love this plant!

P1010159.jpg

Wild Brazil. First Chinense to pod up in spite of starting it a month after some of the others!

P1010166.jpg

Recovering White Bhut looking pretty good! :woohoo: The white on the leaves is from the Bonide...
P1010164.jpg

Recovering 7 Pot...think he's gonna make it! A little pruning and a dry week and he's just exploding! All the new growth is nice and healthy with no signs of mite or aphid damage.

Here is a pic of some black spot that's happening on a few plants...read that this is usually a soil issue? Gave them some Cal and added a little Espoma acidifier pruned all the bad leaves and sprayed them with the Bromide...fingers crossed.
P1010165.jpg

Anyone got info on this? Could it just be where the aphids did some damage and left some marks? The holes are from the hail last weekend not related.

While I was puttering around the garden these guys were finishing up on the smoker...
P1010157.jpg

Mmmmm....smoked but still soft. Half of these dudes are getting blended into some mayo the other half + the placenta from the first half is in the dehydrator to add a little smokey flavor to some powders.

Many more plants to update. Amazing what a week of warm will do!

Thanks for stopping by.....AGAIN!
More pics tomorrow.
Shane

Nice work Shane! One thing that I've noticed on these glogs, is that the plants that go through damage, when they recover, they end up being super bushy and seem to look better than they would have without going through whatever ordeal they endured. Anyway, looking great. Love the flower and pod pics. Keep up the great work.
